In one way, it IS ridiculous, yeah. Little changes in a year between being 17 and being 18. However, a line HAS to be drawn, and it has to be enforced, no matter how 'ridiculous' it is. If we didn't have a definite cut off point between what is sex with a minor and what isn't, you know what would happen? Trouble would happen. What if 17 was legal, then we'd get people going "Oh, she's only 16, nearly 17, it's fine." Then what if 16 was legal? "Oh, she's only 15, nearly 16, it's fine." Once you blur the line, things get very tricky, and very nasty.
Yes, it is kind of surreal that a 17 year old, a day before their birthday, could make you a pedophile today but a normal person tomorrow, I agree it's odd when you think in these terms. But it's necessary. A line HAS to be drawn and adhered to.
Hell, other than maybe his parents having an issue with their kid leaving the country, there really isn't anything illegal going on here. No age of consent laws were broken (NC is 16, or less than that if you marry the 12 year old) and at 17 he could probably have gotten married stateside without his parents permission. As to the age difference, its a little strange for a woman in her early 30s to be interested in a young man for a serious relashionship (serious fucking, however, is another matter). As people get older, the difference between them developmentally isn't as great... whereas a year to a teenager is an amount of great physical and mental change, that same increment of time matters less as you get older. Read up on Eriksons stages of life development if your curious.
