Would you play a Pokemon action game? photo

GameFreak pretty much has it made with the established Pokémon formula. Ten years on and the series is still going strong, even after the huge Pokémania craze died down. Despite still being able to release the game as an RPG with only incremental changes, the team is always considering new ideas, one of which may be an action title.

"Yes, I have thought of doing something new, and it makes me very excited to think of new elements for the game," said game director Junichi Masuda to Game Informer. "... This is just an idea but ... as you know, Pokémon is a role-playing game. But, personally, I really like the action type of games, so we just talk about that sometimes. We probably want to add some kind action element to the game."

I think quite a few fans would love some sort of third-person action title in which they can take on the role of one of their favorite Pokémon. Such a thing might prove a little too violent for the kiddies, but would you be interested in such a game? I'd love to get a hands-on experience of what it's like to personally kick the sh*t out of a Jigglypuff.

This is the sort of thing that would have made me shit myself with joy about 10 years ago but now I'd rather just see it for the sake of seeing it.

Can we use training to get our Pokemon all muscular as was originally proposed for the westernized designs? I'd love to get some massive guns on my Bidoof.

I'd definitely enjoy this, though I doubt the combat mechanics would be all that deep in a Pokemon themed action game.

A current-gen 3D Pokemon game with an open world filled with cities and towns would is more appealing to me, and this statement is coming from an action genre junkie!

I've been dreaming of this since the N64 days. Exactly what Christiangamer described. A console Pokemon game that plays pretty much like the handheld ones, but the actual combat is like that of an action RPG, like the Tales series. Each button has one of the Pokemon's four attacks mapped to it.

You should have used an image of Rayden electrocuting somebody. Would've made more sense for Pikachu.

Frankly, if a Pokémon action game were made, and it were good, I'd play it. I have no qualms against the pocket monsters.

Definitely, but then as Devil Summoner 2 just released in the US last week I guess it already exists?

I think anything that would get the pokemon to be more animated would be a plus. They're so damn stoic, I've never understood how people have found that entertaining.

If the pokemon could kill each other and use finishing moves, then yea I would play it. If they jut fainted and disappeared back into their pokeballs, then no.

I would like a more mature pokemon game, not necessarily blood and gore, but a more seroius story maybe chronicling the days that pokemon and humans fought alongside each other. Maybe a Pokemon World War kind of thing.

Daniel's idea is sick. I'd totally play a World War 3 game with Pokemans as soldiers alongside humans.

Even as a kid, in the TV show I always wondered how all the pokemon survived on "berries" and human made pokemon food.

There had to be some pokemon out there eating eachother. Where are all the half eaten corpses. Where are the scenes of multiple Evee hunting down and eating an unguarded Pigey?

I've actually been hoping for some time now (even Tweeted it this morning, serendipitously enough) that Pokemon would get around to a fighting installment. Any kind of party fighting game a la Smash Bros. would lend itself incredibly well to the full Pokemon roster, and I'd sure as hell buy it.

There are Pokedex entries that suggest Pokemon kill and eat other Pokemon in the Wild.

I don't remember which, but they're there.

I have a more pressing question. Why hasn't Dtoid ever reviewed a Pokemon game? I have never, ever played one, and I would be interested to see what was said about one of the latest series' iterations. I know there are about 30 released a year, so why not pick one for the DS, since I'm on a huge DS kick right now.

How bout an action RPG with Pikachu as the main hero and give him a quest to find some legendary tree that holds the cure to some mystical plague but it seems that the berries of the tree were stolen by a shadowy figure who plans on whiping out all pokemon with their power.

mmmmmm next gen 3D full action rpg, build a trainer, catch a pokemon, then use the pokemon in a 3D arena where you can manually move the pokemon around and have attacks assigned to a button, think Tales of series battles, awesomness

That would be awesome, but only if it could be done well. I wouldn't mind trying to take down the evil empire of "X" Pokemon using one of the 12 starters so far. Also, a correct 3D adaptation of the Pokemon handheld series would be sweet.

Well, Game Freak has proven with Drill Dozer that they can make excellent games that don't follow the traditional Pokemon style, so yeah, I'd play a Pokemon action game. But then again, the only Pokemon game that I've ever played is Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire.

UGH motherfuckers don't ruin the formula!! I don't want to fucking BE a pokemon, I want to CONTROL THEM AND MAKE THEM DO MY BIDDING.

I'm totally serious. I don't want to play as the fuckers. that gives them too much fucking personality and would skew my perspecive when i play a regular pokemon game.
anybody agree?

An action game might be just what the series needs. Controlling the Pokemon in Super Smash Bros. has always been a lot of fun. Just Imagine that sort of thing with all the Pokemon; where you could play as a Squirtle fighting a Mewtwo or something epic. It would bring that awesome feeling from the TV show to the game.

Action in what way? I dont have a DS (infact I never even got a gameboy advanced) so that has been and will continue keeping me from keeping up with the pokemon franchise regardless of what genre they do but anyways if they did somelike like smash bros minus the non pokemon characters i would be totally interested in that

Back when I was little, I always wondered why all the battles in the cartoon were so awesome compared to the games...they should make a game where the battle system allows you to do all the stuff they do in the cartoons. Or at least a battle system that's more then "Squirtle used bubblebeam! It's super effective! Geodude fainted!" ad nauseum.

And, of course, the aforementioned PokeMMO still needs to show up one day...

I actually believed that Pokemon Stadium was going to be an "action Pokemon game", at least it seemed like it was going to be from the video's I watched. I was majorly dissapointed when I found out that it was just the ordinary R/B formula in slow-paced 3D. Especially since I could've purchased Link's Awakening DX instead.

I really love the pokemon series as a whole. And I think a good action game would be good. But they'd have to do it right, and not release it on the Wii...
But I guess whatever is made with the Pokemon Brand on it, loads of Pokefans will buy the game just for the hell of buying something which is 'Pokemon'. I mean, I'd be one of those people. :3

i would tatally play this, mmo or not. actually mmo if done well, and not on the wii, maybe wii hd cuz i wanna be able to not just use moves in battle, but kinda like the show where u can use them out of battle to solve problems or watever like u need to turn a whole bunch of knobs at the same time, use psychic and target multiple things and then turn in god of war style problem solving. and in battle use things in the envirnment, like lets say say your bulbasaur and you see a stick in the forest, pick it up with vine whip and toss it using the wii mote, or psychic pickup the pokemon and toss it in the sky, or if your in the arctic melt the ice with fire, turn it to a water stadium like in the show, that way strategy becomes a component. the possibilities are endless. also, huge cities, over a thousand pokemon, mayb a space program and all the territories so far make up a continent, have like three atleast 40 hours of game play not including catching everything and all the puzzles and whatnot and catching a pokemon could be tossing a ball with the wii mote, u could assign items to buttons to not slow down the game, fishing would be sick, and flying or swimming would be epic, imagine in air battles! also riding a bike would make me s**t with joy :) also seeing pokemon coming to battle you, then just peacing with your pokemon, laughing ur a**es off. i could go on forever, but my looking foreward, is walking around in 3d, in new envirnoments, maybe a desert arctic, or even australia! some crazy possibilities come to mind. Airplanes would be almost neccessary! the story would have to be immense! all the goodies is almost making me cry mayo, im just so excitedgym battles and the elite four would be more like the show wiht the battle stadium being the online component where everyone online meets up for a yearly tournament with a minimum 20 badges or somethig (there'd well over 100 gyms) and just have a brawl like the original series. Online multiplayer, would make it almost an mmo without sacrificing grafics or speed for quality. just an idea, but i think a pretty good one.
