World of Warcraft ruining grades as well as social lives? photo

World of Warcraft and a number of other leading MMOs have come under fire recently from the University of Minnesota Duluth, where college students are allegedly letting their work slip thanks to one too many late night raids.

UMD academic adviser Vince Rapesh apparently accused one student of smoking dope thanks to how shattered he looked. It later transpired that he had, in fact, spent all night on his computer playing WoW. Three students that Rapesh spoke to even admitted to seeking counseling for their gaming habits, one of whom was apparently "too competitive" to stop. "

"I tell parents during talks, I believe it’s one of the hidden causes for kids to fail that nobody knows about it," Rapesh states.

World of Warcraft has a powerful hold over many people, although ultimately it's up to the individual to have the self control to stop. I don't think it's unfair for Rapesh to say that failing grades can be attributed to videogames, but it's obviously the student's fault for getting "addicted" to MMOs in the first place.

I have seen first hand how this game effects ppl...my gf's sister, brother, and brother-in-law are ALWAYS playing it. Don't get me wrong, I love videogames. But playing a game for 8-10 hours a day is just sad. Not to mention the fact that when they AREN'T playing it they consistently talk about it and seem pissed that they aren't at there computers playing. I have seen these ppl go from dedicated, hard-working individuals, to completely obsessed with a video game. There attitudes have changed completely. This dosen't apply to EVERYONE I know who plays the game...but I would say the vast majority of individuals I know who play, play in excess or could be considered "addicted" (if the definition of addicted is letting something interfere with our day to day lives).

A number of my friends ended up dropping out of college for WoW or a menagerie of other games. Some would say they are worse for it, but honestly they all seemed happier in the end. College just isn't meant for some folk, and everyone find that out eventually, games or no games.

Being addicted to anything is bad. If some one has a addictive personality, they can be addicted to moaning the lawn for example.

When one of the biggest Harry Potter books. A professor told that the Harry Potter Books were to bad for kids, because the books were long and... reading... is bad...

Sure blame the game

WoW Is cereal business!

Shit gets real serious right after an expansion... I give it 6 months and it'll cooldown (lol get it... cooldown)

I can't say I haven't been there... been up a few too many nights far too late than I'm supposed to be, I wouldn't say my GPA slipped as a result.

It's also their fault if they get addicted to heroin, still it's illegal.

What the fuck? How many times during your lives have you said/heard 'Man, I totally fucked up [a test, whatever] because I was playing [Mario/Star Control/Quake/Civilization/etc] all of last night!'

This has been around for ages. It's nothing new, and not even relegated to just video games.

Uh, I would have to say that most people drop out/fail stuff due to lack of motivation rather than being incapable of doing the work. Yeah, people fail stuff for a reason, big surprise there.

hhhmmmm...let's see...

I'm 27-years-old
I'm happily married and have two kids
I've graduated with my bachelors' in accounting and I'm halfway through getting my M.B.A.
I have a full-time job
I am in the process of starting a business with a partner

...and I play video games, including World of Warcraft, in a controlled manner. Granted, I'm not the epic of the epic, but I do have a level 80 Shadow Priest, 70 pally, and a 61 warlock (over a three-year span of playing WoW, mind you). I'm also heavily into Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2, right now.

So, I guess my point is, you can play video games and still be as successful in life and/or your career as you want to be. I commend anyone for trying to seek help to control their addictions...but, at the end of the day, if you have an addiction...it's your fault. Sorry, if that hurts, but it's true.

Up until a few months ago i was a big wow addict. But you know what college got harder so i stopped playing. Also i was never the type to stay up all night playing unless i didn't have anything special to do the next day. A little self control can go a long way.

My grades actually went up as I played this game. Since during the grinding i'd just leave my paladin swinging away at a monster etc or i'd be waiting for a BG to open so i'd just read one of my text books. When I quit to play faster paced games I couldnt do that so my grades went down the year I quit lol.

I went to UMD (University of MN Duluth) last year. I had a buddy there that plays/played WoW and he did just fine with classes. He mainly geeked it on the weekends.

Where I'm at now I have two buddies that play WoW and they seem to be doing alright with classes, so I guess it's all just how much you can control your addiction.

I had friends who had similar problems in college years ago. The culprit then was Counterstrike. It's all about the person's priorities. Get your school work taken care of before you sit down to game, and you'll have no problems.

I bombed my sophomore and junior years of high school thanks to Medievia. Then I realized I had to Straighten Up And Fly Right in senior year.

Eh, I kind of know how they feel. I picked up WoW again over Thanksgiving break - just in time for the last week of classes and finals. I haven't been getting much sleep lately because I chose to come back from class and play WoW instead of finishing projects or studying. BUT I did get all of my schoolwork done (at 5 AM, but it was done), and I'm probably going to get another A's and B's semester. It's just a matter of self control (I have very little, but apparently it's enough) and getting your priorities in order, not the game itself.

Are MMOs the problem? Do we want people to be interested in their careers and their families just because they don't have anything more interesting to do? I think video game addiciton is a sign more of how shallow we treat the rest of our lives than video games being a problem.

I am writing in response to Game informer’s article “World of Warcraft is not a healthy game.” Game informer says that people get addicted to the game and end up quitting school or work to play. This may be true, but the majority of people play to socialize.
First, World of Warcaft is one of the few very successful MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) that has over 12 million people playing everyday. This game helps people who are shy to socialize in a different way, a way that they can be comfortable with. Second people meet with people, but through there characters instead of themselves. In the real world people obviously don’t have super powers and such, but in the game people can be whoever they want to be and that lets them use there imagination.
So rather than, saying World of Warcraft is not a healthy game, let’s thank the creators for making a game that brings people together with a common interest.
