World of Warcraft movie speculation is intriguing photo

But is it intriguing enough to convince everyone to give another videogame-based movie a chance? Uh ... I'll let you be the judge of that. My general viewpoint tends to be that of expecting the absolute worse and then likely getting something that's not great, but it's not the horrible mess you thought it would be.

The IMDB page of the Sam Raimi-directed flick recently got a facelift -- originally just World of Warcraft, the film is now referred to as Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King. The interesting part, which IncGamers notes, is that this could signify the film going in the same direction as the popular Christie Golden novel Arthas: Rise of the Lich King.

If Raimi's movie is going to be standard epic fantasy battles with massive set pieces, then I could care less. If it's instead going to be a much more personal story of Arthas becoming a Death Knight and, well, you know the rest, then consider me interested in hearing more.

Lame basis for a movie. WoW's universe is not nearly rich and intrigui- oh wait, Hollywood doesn't care about substance! Silly me.

Still... it's a movie being made by SAM MO-THER-FUCK-IN' RAIMI so I simply must see it. But really, how good could this possibly be? And how does one follow something like Drag Me To Hell? Dammit, I loved that movie.

Hmph. Rather then trying to cram all of warcraft lore into a 2 hour movie they are sticking with what is essentially the story of Warcraft 3. Fair enough, it is a decent story.

Blizzard has said that the first movie(you read that right) shall feature solely on the Human(Warcraft 1) campaign/lore. Being Horde, the only Human I really care about is Arthas' fucked up story.

Should of been about The First War (Warcraft 1) instead.

Sam Raimi blows. Just throwin' that out there.

I fuckin' want this to kick ass. If it does it just might push me into paying attention to Warcraft. I never got into it for some reason.

Warcraft fans watch out. You will have evil... and a dance scene in your movie.

PS. Fuck you Sam Raimi.

I think Warcraft lore seems to lack substance to those who do not delve deep enough into it. Some of the best literary writes of all time were lacking in overall substance, but the depths you can go to and pull your own ideas and interpretations from is amazing. Now warcraft isnt exactly that great lol But i think Arthas's story is very well done.

At least it could be good as long as they show subtle change in Arthas as his soul begins to wear thin. Like Luke Skywalker and his slow (partial) decent to the dark side. It was subtle, i.e. every movie his clothes got darker (white > orange > black). Such things like that could make it very compelling

Star Craft's Kerrigan and Arthas's story is sorta made from the same template right? When I played WC3 after SC, there was a strong sense of deja-vu, due to the parts where the main hero changed to become the villain.

The downward spiral of Arthas is probably what will be the main focus then. I wonder if they show the cleansing of Stratholme (a-f**king-gain).

I just want to see how his story ends really, I sure as hell won't be investing all my free time raiding to see that stupid ending (where Arthas falls), wait, turns out I know it already! ... grumble ...

Warcraft has an incredibly deep and rich story to it. You can't deny that. Unfortunately most people skip the quest text as they level and the whole effect is lost.

Regardless, the downfall of Arthas (which was the entire storyline of Warcraft 3) was fantastic, and I'm glad to see it maybe the topic of the new film. He'll sadly be long dead in WoW terms when the film is out, but I can't see any other related storyline in WoW that is as epic. Illidan of course was an awesome character, so I'm hoping he returns as well.

Its one of the more classically interesting (IM MAKING UP TERMS!) story archs in Warcraft lore. Its a human, destined for good, doing the evil betrayal for round about good reasoning. It'll make for decent melodrama, and probably is the best way to introduce Warcraft to a movie audience.

Plus, humans are less expensive than gnomes, trolls, tauren and nightelves to put on screen for long stretches of time. :p

Jordan: "then I could care less"...?
You *could* care less? So if Raimi's movie *is* going to be standard epic fantasy battles with massive set pieces, you'll still be reasonably interested?
Just checking, unintended positives instead of negatives can be so confusing. I don't know nothing.

probably one of the few, and only, videogame movies i'm optimistic about - i've long ago learned not to care about videogame movies, but i think they could do something decent with this.

mind you, i dont expect something *amazing* or anything - i'm expecting something along your typical summer-blockbuster-action flick, a la "300" or the like (but hopefully better than 300 was).

really, it would be very easy for them to get this right, as the major parts of the story are already written in Warcraft 3, and they have plenty of big epic action movies (with touches of drama) they could use for inspiration - hopefully they wont disappoint (though hollywood seems determined to do just that with videogame movies, so i guess we'll see).

First, do we actually know for sure that this film's direction has been shifted to be about the Lich King? From what I can see, all of this speculation is based on changes on an IMDB page and we all know how accurate IMDB are about films so early into production. From what Blizzard has said prior to this, the film will be centered around an non-major (possibly original) character in the Warcraft universe and not the story of a main figure like Thrall or Arthas.

That being said, I admit that my interest in this movie dropped severely when it was revealed that Raimi was attached to direct this film because his previous work in fantasy, even if it is only as a producer/creator role and not director, has established that he sees fantasy as a the type of campy romp you see in Hercules/Xena/Army of Darkness. I would love that he brings into Warcraft more of the darkness in Darkman or the darker sections of Spider-man but I just can't help but think of the fantasy elements that Raimi has already contributed to and wonder if he was hired to bring that to Warcraft.

If the animation is the same quality as the opening movies for each of the WoW expansions, then I definitely want to see it. Those are done beautifully.

As I recall from the orignal press release, WORLD of Warcraft was never mentioned... It was annonced as a WARCRAFT movie directed by Sam Rami. It appears that everyone just latched onto the Warcraft name and instantly made it part of Blizzards WoW franchise.

All I know is that every time I open the fridge and see Gulden's mustard, I think of Guldan, and of that goofy orc narrator from Warcraft 2. And ballistas. There had better be goddamn ballistas.

Just don't be as aweful as that Uwe Boll Dungeon Siege film. I knew just from the trailer that it was horrible. Then again, as soon as Uwe had his claws in it, game over man!

The movie should be about the Pandaren, no joke. Only interesting lore :P. Also, if there are no Giant Penguins I am going to be PISSED.
