World of Warcraft director teases console game photo

Recently at BlizzCon, World of Warcraft director Jeffrey Kaplan gently hinted at the possibility that Blizzard could be developing a console MMO not named World of Warcraft. In an interview, Kaplan told MTV Multiplayer that WoW couldn’t work on a console, but said that the boys at Blizzard acquisition Swingin’ Ape know their way around next-generation consoles.

From the interview:

...  I don’t think ‘World of Warcraft’ would really work that well on the console, but that’s not to say that other MMOs couldn’t. And we have a pretty savvy group of console developers — a lot of the guys we inherited from Swingin’ Ape really know what they’re doing on next-gen consoles. So we might have a few tricks up our sleeves in that regard.
Kaplan is speaking in a World of Warcraft context, so it’s probably not too far off base to suppose that this hinted at title could be some sort of collective experience like an MMO. Hopefully, the title will be built from the ground up for consoles so we don’t have to hear the “left mouse button doesn’t translate to ‘X’ very well” rhetoric that we’ve been exposed to thus far in conversations about Diablo 3.

What do you guys want? Do you think Blizzard is capable of producing a decent console game?

Why wouldn't ‘World of Warcraft’ work on a console? Is it a server problem?

Why not? Rock'n'Roll Racing was pretty cool.

@orionsaint

i doubt its a server thing. its the controls. im sure it would be kind of awkward to translate it properly. now if all consoles had keyboards and mouse standard...that would be great.

I would love a console MMO, and Blizzard are certainly capable...But... Would it be paid subscription? That extra cost added to the admittedly mild perturbations to one's back balance caused by Live fees might escalalte the cash drain to uncomfortable levels.

I always love(and by love I mean hate) when people ask if a console MMO is Pay-To-Play or not. Name ONE MMO today (none of those crappy pseudo-mmo-borderline-non-MMOs) that is free? You will find the list very very short. For any GOOD MMO requires server maintenance and regularly scheduled content and such requires fees. The justification is there and if you don't think so, remember what they say about getting what you pay for.

Oh and about the TREMENDOUS costs if there was such a thing as a Pay-to-Play MMO on a console(FFXI anyone?) it would be the same as its PC brethren, the average $15/Month. Add that to the $4/Month of XBox Live and you pay a whole *GASP* $20/Month! OMFG THATS TOO MUCH!!!!!! Would you kindly die in a fire?

I would love to play WoW on 360, I would even get my buddy who just bought a 360 into it if it was on a console. Thing is, to really get the best setup, a keyboard+mouse combo is a must. Way too many buttons/skills/items in WoW(and any good MMO) to be played properly with a gamepad. Not that I'm one of those "mouse > gamepad" elitists. Hell, I would even subscribe to a whole new account if it was on 360.

@Rammstein, heres one: Guild Wars.

Personally I don't want WoW on 360, like it fine on PC :-)
Would be cool if Blizzard made a game on consoles though, why does it have to be an MMO?
