World of Warcraft back in China with new government changes photo

I'm glad my country's government doesn't give a sh*t about what I play or how long I play it. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be much of a case for "bad games" anyway, as aside from the occasional eroge (don't judge me!), I only play those boring games where numbers come out of peoples heads.

China, on the other hand, has their hand in everything you do, even your gaming. World of Warcraft has relaunched there after a fair bit of downtime, but some new changes have been put in place. What kind of changes? Silly ones. Instead of piles of bones, now you'll see sandbags. The blood color is now black, and not red. Pictures on MMOSite show other minor changes, like replacing bony looking arm and leg joints with black bands. What?

At least Chinese gamers can continue to get their WoW on. For a bit, at least, until the Man shuts them off for exceeding their daily gaming limit. Hmmm. Maybe that's why China is a world financial power now.

Democracy is not a perfect system but at least they allow us the liberty to enjoy games properly.

It is silly, but isn't there some history with never showing the dead? I remember MTG card art (yes, I am a nerd) getting re-purposed to not show human skeletons.

I admit to being a bit confused as to why MMOSite regards this as news. Even when The9 was running WoW in China (as it may still be), one of their conditions from the very beginning was that undead of all kinds, including the playable types, have no exposed bones at all. They're pretty strict about that whole thing.

There's also a rumor that the reason WoW still has no Pandarens (a panda-like humanoid race) is because China would object.

Basically, China having their fingers all over WoW is nothing new.

I don't get it, why is the Chinese government being such dicks and giving World of Warcraft a hard time even though there are dozens of other Chinese MMO games that go unmolested by the government? Is WoW too popular for the government's liking?

What exactly prevents the Chinese from circumventing the new skins? I can do it, why can't they? Somehow I'm betting a Chinese hacker has a whole mod that puts everything back in.

So the undead aren't undead anymore.

Great.

Umm... hasn't WoW in China always been like this?

That's what happens when you live in a shit country but hey, the Chinese people I've met are completely brainwashed and think their government is the best thing since sliced bread so they must enjoy it there. Personally, I'd be too scared to play WoW in China for fear of getting electro shock 'therapy' or being beaten to death.

And it's because of them that there will be no playable Panderan race. Or Panderans at all for that matter.

This is bullshit. Utterly pathetic bullshit on the behalf of the Chinese government. Their worse than the Germans, but not that worse.

The bright and colourful ads on the source site nearly made me pass out.

If it's done for moral reasons, then I don't have a problem with it. It's the same way that Americans have nudity censored for them. (Read:The Witcher)

n1k0l4: I'd say China is far worse than Germany.

At least you can sort of live your own life in Germany.

what else do you expect from a crappy country like China?
They are brewing idiots as we discuss here. They are completely brainwashed, you should just read some comments when the olympics were going on last year...

Meh, the undead actually look better this way. I've played an undead for so long I've gotten so tired of getting brand new armor only for it to have so many wholes from which my bones can stick out of.

I do not really care what happens over in China with regards to their gaming. By the way Dale, don't talk about "world powers". You write about video games for a living, you obviously do not know much about foreign affairs. Maybe you should read some Minxin Pei.

Why was the goatee censored? That's just overkill

China has a very long cultural history of ancestral worship. They have a much greater respect for the dead and have a much larger collection of beliefs centered around the departed and their spirits.

So I guess characters with Hentai octopus penis-heads are out of the question?

That's whack.

It's funny. I've always found the bony joints on the undead annoying.

I know this is the least of Chinese citizens problems but it's still stupid they aren't allowed to see bones in games.

What's the point of censorship? This game already has a teen rating from ESRB (or they don't have an ESRB?). Clearly if you can't take seeing blood or skeletons, you are way too early playing this game.

But then, most, I'm not saying all, Chinese players of WOW just play to sell wow gold

i guess ignorance of cultural norms deviating from your own is all the rage these days

especially when they remove bones in an videogame that you never have to play.

Now watch these hypocrites not censor their xenophobic Jap killing game a government sponsored organization is releasing this year...You're not even able to kill your teammates, so you literally have to only kill Japanese by the way.
