World of Warcraft annual subscribers get Diablo III FREE! photo

Blizzard has just announced that World of Warcraft subscribers will get a free copy of upcoming RPG Diablo III for free, with "no strings attached." The news was broken by Blizzard president Mike Morhaim at this year's Blizzcon.

This freebie was dangled next to the announcement of a WoW Annual Pass, a 12-month subscription package. This is what one needs in order to qualify for the free Diablo copy, although I'm sure most hardcore Blizzard fans have no problem pre-emptively subscribing for a year.

That's a pretty big carrot to dangle in front of customers. Sound like a deal to you?

Pretty smart move on Blizz's part but I'll pass. Took me several tries to finally break the WoW addiction and I'll never go back. Good deal for those that still enjoy WoW though.

Not only do you get Diablo 3 for free but you also get a special mount and guaranteed access to the Mists of Pandaria beta. If you're a WoW player, sounds like an amazing deal.

If I were still playing WoW, then I would probably bite.

Of course, when I was playing WoW, I didn't actually CARE about any other videogame.

Huh. Now that I think about it, WoW probably saved me a lot of money back them.

I would totally bite if I played WoW. That's a killer deal.

They might be running low on capital, there's really no reason otherwise for them to do this, it's that good of a deal. So, they do this to raise some money quickly from all the WoW players

Great deal for WoW players. I'd rather pay one third of that price and only get D3, though, thanks.

I think this is incredibly smart on Blizzards part. 1) If you play WoW, you probably were going to get D3 anyway. 2) If you are going to pay for WoW anyway, might as well do it all at once if you are able to.

Now I am not sure on the numbers for active users in WoW anymore, but it has to be 10 Million already. so even if 1% of the people on WoW participate in this, thats 100,000 players on D3 first day. Which is incredible. And then those people starting up the auction house... I cannot see anything that Blizzard is doing wrong with this.

Ugh... Would love to take advantage as I think it is an excellent deal, but I refuse to go through the shake withdrawls from WOW again.

With one move they're, getting good PR, shoring up their WoW subscriber memberships, and getting a head start on people that will use the real money auction house in Diablo. That's a pretty good move.

I know, its a vicious cycle. I've literally seen divorces spur from this game. Its kinda ridiculous how far some people take it.

Blizzard, are you sure you're not turning into Valve? Just wait, there has to be a catch somewhere.

I hit the snooze button on MMO's when WoW and WoW clones became the norm. I will stop hitting the snooze button once I see something more original and not so damn boring. My opinion, there I said it!

Pretty crafty of them. This has to be a move to keep players from switching to SWTOR or Guild Wars. People generally tend to stick with what they've already invested in.

Nice. I wonder how much an annual pass is. It is around £9 a month in the uk, so £108? Not taking into account a discount to make it more attractive?

To everyonw comenting here: Do you realize there are millions of players playing wow right now? Do you think Actiblizzard is doing this as desperate movement to get some cash and run?

This is a very smart movement and this is going to work like honey in a bear mouth. I just do not have the words to cheer the guy who came up with this idea :)

How does one become addicted to WoW? Boring Point-and-Click game is boring.

My take on this is that Blizzard's starting to see its MMO wane a little bit, so they're setting up all these bells and whistles like offing one of their games for free, and a probably highly discounted 12 month subscription plan as a way to work around that.

I'm slightly surprised that the 12 month plan wasn't actually followed by an announcement for a lifetime subscription. I know even more people who would be willing to plop a big chunk of money down for that alone.

Like Trist said, its not for me. I too made several vain attempts to break the WoW addiction and it turns out Cataclysm was the thing that made cold turkey feel like a warm summer breeze. I'll buy Diablo 3, if I get it at all, Blizzard can have my money that way.

"Do you think Actiblizzard is doing this as desperate movement to get some cash and run?"

Actually, yes.

They've lost a lot more players then they're actually telling us they did since Cataclysm's been released. Theres nothing truly in their way still except the specter of what could be SWTOR, but they're still frightened by what they're seeing. So what does it sound like they did?

Made a place and a race they said they've never put into the game.

Make the race that will be, from what my sources tell me, a playable Neutral, that both sides will have access too.

Make a new class that they said would be near impossible due to balancing the game (because they learned hard lessons from adding Deathknights that they didnt want to repeat), and even if they did make the class, it wouldn't come along for YEARS, let alone along side a new race.

Then offered up their next big game, a game thats been haunting fans for years now, for free with a big 12 month subscription -a subscription that gets payed up front and locks you into the guilt trip of getting the most of the money you put into it, because even if you decide to stop playing, the account will be open till those 12 months are up.

All of this is to recapture a lot of the people who left with flashy things they always wanted, while making the players currently playing make a grab at staying locked into the game with other flashy things they would have paid for any way.

So yeah, its a cash grab.

"They've lost a lot more players then they're actually telling us they did since Cataclysm's been released."

You're going to need to qualify that with some sort of proof dude, the rest of what you're saying kind of hinges on that actually being the truth.

So basically, Subtracting the Diablo 3 (which we're all buying anyway) this basically means you get a year of WoW for 95 bucks, or $7.99 a month, I dont think I could have kept paying for WoW at 15/month but for half that, I might just do this.

It appears to be a desperate grab for guaranteed cash via a 1 yr subscription.

I felt like WoW jumped the shark during Cataclysm. I left, and I think many others did too. It is a 6 yr old game after all.

@boomingechoes this expansion has been being developed since before cata launched, so the panderan choice wouldnt have come about due to cataclysm losses.

Also the subscription is not paid up front, you can pay it monthly if you want, you are just committing to pay for the next 12 months

Also, wow has pokemon now!

Anyone with a kindergarten level proficiency in math will realize that if they take this so called deal, they will be paying $40 more than two regular full priced games. No thanks Blizzard, if I wanted to be cheated out of my money, I'd rather pay for a blowjob.

Sure, if you have no intention of actually *playing* wow and are only getting it for free D3. That is just friggin retarded, and besides that's not what they want. Here's where you need at least a kindergarten level proficiency in reading comprehension: if you look at the actual description of the offer rather than just looking at the numbers and herp derping all over it, you'd see that this only applies to accounts that are in good standing and have been active before October 18th of this year - this is intended as an incentive for people already playing the game. You cannot participate if you're just making a brand new account for it.

It only took a month from the time of this article, but the (hard) proof I needed for what I said about Blizzard not telling us how many people have really left finally made it to the web (and the article linked in the article I'm about the link is from a few weeks prior to the one I'm linking): http://www.gamespot.com/news/6346436.html?tag=nl.e513

And really, who knows how long they've been sitting on that info before it was released and now, a month after Blizzcon, its being projected that they could lose another 1.6million or so for reasons including The Old Republic.

So yeah, the game is on a decline, it could decline more, and their obviously afraid now. They may have been developing this expansion since before Cataclysm but it doesn't mean THEIR analysts didn't see a decline coming, and a strategy was formed around that -hence Panda people, and their land, that they promised would never see the light of day, and a free -highly anticipated- game (and mount, and beta access...) for the PROMISE of giving them money for a year. They could have figured there was going to be a problem around ToR's release (whenever that would be) when the game was announced and Bioware was linked to the project, Blizzard isn't stupid, they know that's a killer combination of project and development team.
