Massive difference between watching a video and getting into it.
World of Tanks is an F2P game that doesn't offer any advantage if you pay, if anything its better to play through it so you earn your gear and really learn how the game works, the game has multiple tiers of tanks, all made with careful detail, all entirely realistic, its one of these games where if you die there's no bullshit, the other guy was just better.
My boyfriend is a huge fan of it and he plays constantly, he's scary good at it to.
It's not hard to explain why "game is free" equates to "game has lots of registered users" though. Of the 40M registered users the peak population probably runs to about 700,000. (500,000 of which are in Russia, which has it's own servers)
Do you have to take out people from a distance with mortars? Or do you sneak in and take people out with your light tank? Perhaps snipe tanks from a distance with your medium to large tanks? I love it. You can't just barge into battle and use zero tactics.
Sadly, I don't know if i'll ever go back to it. I might in the future but I tend to lose interest once beta ends for any games. There is exclusions but this game wasn't in that list.
Personally I snipe as much as I can. Whenever I try to be point man I always find myself being the only one moving forward and getting nailed by multiple enemies as a result.
Better gear does not equal skills, those who have earned their tanks via playing the f2p side tend to come out on top of most skirmishes from my observations.
"Generally there are two types of free ammo: High explosive that causes the most damage and high penetrating, that can pierce armor but do so at a high cost to actual damage inflicted. Gold ammo is high penetratingx2, so it's better at piercing but the raw damage points are at the same level"
Now don't get me wrong, high penetrating ammo is usually the only way a scrappy light tank can put a dent in higher level heavy tanks, but it's still a sacrifice and the increase in armor pierceability just isn't worth it
Meanwhile for proud artillery players like me gold ammo is utterly worthless because I don't need armor piercing when most of the damage I cause is from splash damage and direct hits pierce armor anyway"
So there you have it folks.
It's true that paid consumables and shells can give you an advantage over F2P players but running all gold in pub matches is prohibitly expensive and is reserved for clan wars (the end game conquest map) and tournaments. Therefore, it is incredibly rare to meet them in pub matches.
As for premium accounts, they give you increased cash and experience but have no effect in battle.
Premium tanks give you much more credits than regular tanks which makes the grind easier but to compensate, they are weaker than tanks of a similar tier.
* Clan wars is a little different, because the clan receives gold for winning, so there is something to be gained from the spend.
