World Famous Portmanteau: Beta Edition photo

If you're anything like the millions of other people surfing the Web right now, then you're probably always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to waste your life away behind a keyboard. As always, Destructoid is here for you.

In addition to the world famous Monday Mind Teasers and world famous Ron Workman instructional home videos, you now have the opportunity to enter the wonderful world of world famous portmanteaus. This week's portmanteau is a BETA run of sorts. Next time it will be much harder and there may also be some prizes involved (no promises, but I have a few extra copies of Pan's Labyrinth burning a whole in my ... well, they're actually just sitting on my couch). Also, you may die if you fail to guess it correctly, but we're still working out some issues with Elephant to make that happen.

Hit the jump to read the rules and help me help you from doing anything that involves physical activity. Healthy living is for poor people!

What the fcuk is a portmanteau?

A portmanteau is basically two words, phrases, titles, or sentences that are tied together with one common word/part of a word. In this case it will be titles of movies and games. The last word of the first movie/game should be the first word of the second movie/game.

Examples:

Night of the Living Dead Head Fred
Metroid Prime Suspects

The Rules:

1.) One title must be a movie, and the other title must be a video game. No television shows or anything like that (at least not for right now). Which one comes first can switch from portmanteau to portmanteau.

2.) You are allowed two (2) questions at a time, and you must wait until your previous questions have been answered before going again. If you ask more than two questions, your additional questions will be ignored and Jim Sterling will appear behind you if you say his name in the mirror ten times. Your two guesses can both be about the movie, or both about the game, or one of each.

Examples:

Was the movie released after 1997?
Does the movie star Bruce Willis?

OR

Is the game rated T?
Was the game released by Capcom?

OR

Does the movie star Bruce Willis?
Does the game star Bruce Willis?

3.) When you think you have an idea what the solution may be, you can use one or both of your guesses to try and guess the portmanteau.

Example:

Is the game rated T?
Is the port Night of the Living Dead Rising?

4.) Questions can only receive a "Yes" or "No" answer, so "How many...?" and "On which platform...?" type of questions can't be answered.

---

For today's "port" we will be keeping things simple. Normally the word that ties the two titles in together does not have to have the exact same spelling, as long as it has a similar pronunciation, and is pretty obvious (War of the Worlds of Warcraft) but for this run that will NOT be allowed.

Also, the game can be found using Gamespot's Gamefinder, and the movie can be found on IMDB.

Shall we then? I'm thinking of a portmanteau...

Two free hints:

The game was not made by Square.
The movie is not an anime.

I am really lost on the game. We're looking for a Japanese 2-player Playstation RPG sequel that didn't originate on a console and did not get a 5+ ranking on Gamespot? That last criteria alone cuts out like 90% of games we've probably ever heard of... very strange.

@madfigs. I dont know much about gamespot but Maybe the game came out before Gamespot even existed so such a review wouldnt exist thus making the no answer to the 5+ score question valid.

Is it Dragon Quest for Fire?
William Haley's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/23/2007 04:54

FOR THE RECORD:

The game was originally released on a handheld gaming system, not a console. There has been some dispute over whether or not a handheld qualifies as a "console", and while I say no, others, including official news outlets, say "maybe."

So this Playstation game was originally available on a handheld gaming...device.

For future reference, PC's, handhelds, consoles, arcade, and the Wii are all different categories of gaming systems. @_@

No more hints, that's what the questions are for. However, since I'm about to go AFK for a few hours, I will give a summary of information that has been given already...

The game is an RPG from a series of games originating from Japan for the PS1 and is not rated on Gamespot.

The movie is an American horror film involving supernatural elements directed by a man with a male lead, released in or before 1985.

All future questions and guesses will be answered when I return.
