Wolfenstein 3D classic comes to the iPhone photo

That shiny, pretty new version of Wolfenstein for the 360, PS3 and PC is just what some gamers want, but let's be honest here -- some of us remember when it was called Castle Wolfenstein, was played on our Commodore 64s, and was pretty awesome despite the simple as can be graphics. Next-gen updates of old games are in vogue though, and that's cool, but I just might have good news for those of you who grew up on the older games.

Wolfenstein 3D Classic has been announced for iPhones, with idSoftware at the helm. If you've been playing FPS games since the good old days, surely this classic was among your favorites. All the big enemies are there (yes, even MechaHitler) along with a new top down map. Cool! It's on the iPhone store now for $4.99, so check it out if you want to relive some nostalgic times.

This game looks really, really awful. There's a good way of bringing back old school games. This is how not to do it.

This is my favorite of all the early shooters. I'll never forget how much time I spent with this game as a kid. I would totally buy it if I had the hardware.

Colette have you played this game?

How are the controls?

Seems like you'd sacrifice a whole lot of, well, everything by playing it on an iphone...

I wonder how hard it is to play? I'll probably buy it because I'm dumb and I have the money, and also because I'm curious how well it plays and it seems like another good bathroom break game for the iphone

It's this much on Steam. My bad ass sense makes me want to despise them for this move. The iphone owning kid who loved Wolfenstein, better known in my house by it's executable file Wolf3d, when it was released wants to buy it now. For $5, I can afford to be wrong.

Just grabbed it. Not disappointed at all. This is a great port. Bring it on, id!

I bought it today and it's amazing. Controls are spot on even in default mode. Checking for hidden walls just takes a strafe against the wall now; no button to press. Sounds and graphics exactly the same, and the map is pinchable.

One of the best iPhone/iPod games to buy, period.

This was an immediate buy for me. Awesome game, one that means a lot to me. I played it while working at my first job. :)

At any rate, at least it's more reasonably priced than Metal Gear for the iphone. That game is fun, but it's not eight dollars fun. I'd estimate it at four dollars fun and could see how this game would be worth the extra dollar.

Cool idea but I'm really not digging the arms growing out of the health HUD. I'd prefer a bar to go all the way across the bottom of the screen.

Or if he was, like, asleep or something.

Just saying.

@iconsam and Chronic Logic:

This port is FANTASTIC. The game looks super crisp on the actual phone, controls beautifully (after about a 20 second learning curve,) and unlike 90% of the iPhone applications out there I haven't had it crash a single time on me.

No ridiculously long loading screens or frame rate stutters either. Booyah.

What I'm really saying is before you condemn the game so harshly, try it out. Open minds people!

Yeah, I bought it, this game is easily the best game I've played on an iPhone. It took me probably five or ten minutes to really get a hang of the controls, but after that, it's smooth sailing.
