With PS3, the fun's always free: Is Sony mocking Xbox Live with new ad? photo

Sony has released a new advert that possibly makes a joke at Xbox Live's expense (expense, get it?). The new ad declares that "the fun's always free," referencing the PlayStation Network and the fact that it costs nothing to game online through Sony's service, while on Xbox Live you have to pay for the privilege.

The fact that Sony doesn't yet expect anybody to pay for its online provision is certainly a huge bonus, but by the same token, what Xbox Live offers for the money is pretty damn good, and the cost has certainly not stopped millions of customers using Microsoft's gold service. Would the PSN be successful at all if Sony started charging? Probably not at this current juncture, which is why it's been a far easier decision to make the service free. Perhaps a free PSN will be far more tempting in a year or two, but if it becomes as big and successful as Xbox Live, will Sony want to keep offering it for the price of nothing? Corporations generally don't give away what they can charge money for.

At any rate, while Sony can continue to boast of a free PSN, that doesn't really serve much of an insult to a company making millions off its premium online service. If you sold your car on Ebay for ten thousand dollars, you won't be impressed by the fact that I gave mine away to someone I met in a Yahoo chatroom.

What do you think of the new advert? Is the fun always free, as Sony claims? Did they just serve Microsoft a plate of ownage, or does Sony need some online multiplayer smashes of its own before it can start using the PSN as ammo against the Xbox 360? The comment box is there for the using, so use it.

I think if they wanted a dose of truth in advertizing it should be "PSN: Fun Free since day one."

well said dood.

However I think the ad is pretty funny, because as great as Xbox Live is, it could be free. Personally I'd love to see PSN get as big as XBL. If it starts doing better, it might force Microsoft to stop charging for its service.

is the asterisk there so that they can someday charge for the service without having this add come back to haunt them?

PSN is fucking shit.

I don't mind paying 30 quid for a year of good quality online gaming.

I've had no problems with the PSN, as long as the host has a decent connection everything runs really smoothly. The Playstaion Store on the other hand has been annoying me lately. I downloaded a majority of the Rock Band DLC from it the other night and was getting pretty frustrated with the navigation. Then after actually buying the songs (about $60 worth) I discovered that I had to sit there and tell each and every song to download.

Hmmmm....is Live REALLY that much better than PSN? What do you want to do when you want multiplayer action? You click "online game" and you play with people across the world. Can XBL do that? Yes, but can PSN do it also? Yes sir. So if this is what online gaming is about, the XBL is NO better than PSN.

As for what XBL offers, it's pretty good for the money....what? The ability to private chat in a game? Is that worth $50? I think not. If it's little novelty features like that that make people think XBL is THAT much better than PSN, then I guess most people have forgotten what playing a game is about.

Honestly, I think the only reason people DO pay for Live is because they HAVE to in order to play online. People just compensate for that by saying "XBL is better". For what XBL DOES offer, I'm sure it could be done for free

I wouldnt pay for PSN, its awful. Not the multiplayer, but the friends system, and the store.

Xbox Live's background functionality is amazing, but yah... we have to pay for ads. That sucks

I'm sure that asterisk is there so they can start charging whenever their service becomes useful. I encourage Microsoft to answer back with a witty ad and keep fanning the flames for my amusement.

@liam2015 : Sure, they get ads but they pay for the service. Same way you pay for a magazine for the content and get 50% of Converse and Calvin Klein advertisements.
Not saying that it's cool to have ads, it sucks balls but to say that xbox live users PAY for ads is misguided.

I agree with Amaru, this bickering makes for interesting times

Oh, come on! How deeply are we reading into this? All Sony is saying is that PSN is free. How the hell is that a knock against the 360? Are they not supposed to advertise that PSN is free just because XBL isn't? I could see if they said "The fun is always free, unlike the OTHER GUYS!" That would be a stab at Microsoft. I don't recall seeing all that though. All they said is that PSN is a free service, which it is.

This fanboy crap is getting absurd.

They're service is free but Microsoft gives away a lot more free games and DLC. The only thing PSN ever gives for free is themes or background pics.

What you don't pay for in PSN you pay for when you buy the damn thing... it's the least they can do.

Now they just need to make all of that ass-crazery free... if you're paying 60 bucks a pop for COD4, then you BEST get the multiplayer for damn free.

The console wars can bicker at each other all they want if and only if it will make them BETTER the technology and interface... most of us have already chosen our console (the lucky ones don't choose cause, they've got both) -- and it's just LAME to fight with each other about it.

Let us all just laugh... cause, you know... it's FREE and all.

Haven't companies always taken jabs at each other to prove they're better than the competition? I thought that was fairly standard in business. Anyways, I've got both, and I don't think the PSN warrants all this negativity. It may not be as sophisticated as XBL (which has been around for a lot longer than it, mind you), but it functions in providing online play extremely well. I've never had a problem getting into a game, and I really don't mind the interface of the playstation store at all, either. The lack of in-game XMB is a HUGE problem though, but I guess sony is working on it. Hopefully that'll be fixed soon.

Actually, Liam2015, advertisers pay for their ads to be placed there. That is the point of advertising.

The reason Live has advertisers on it is because those companies see a venue in which it is worth their while to pay for advertisements to be placed there. 10 million or so odd users isn't a bad little audience for certain products. Maybe if PSN had enough users companies would see it as more profitable to advertise there.

I've had the same experience with online gaming on both systems so far. I really don't see what's so great about XBL. I wish both would see some improvements in their store interfaces and speed, but the multiplayer has been equal across both for me. I don't know why I'm paying $5/month for XBL other than to just do what I can for free on the PS3, but I've only owned the 360 for a month now.

Eh, PSN is not like live on a basic level. Live has microsoft owned and run dedicated servers for the games that have multiplayer in them, hence why you pay. On the contrary the only sony servers that are used are the ones for the games they publish and the central information servers(for contact info, CC info, PSN store etc). This means that if a company pulls servers for a game on PSN the players wont be able to play, the same is not true of Live. However somehow on Live you have to go through the same EA rigmarole as PSN, which is annoying because you have to sign up twice to play an EA on a service which is supposed to be centralised to avoid that crap.

Live is quite good really, it has its problems sure, but in general it is a behemoth of a service running millions of people at once. For Sony to say the fun is free - jesus, it would need to be free as the service is not vaguely comparable. Live is much more than just playing a mate on COD4. I doubt any fence sitters will look at this piss poor poster and say "hmmm...the fun is FREE on the PS3...nice rhyme. I'm buyin one". Free stuff is open to much more abuse also, imagine if Live was free, the jerks would fuck up every game. When the threat of loosing your subscription for being an online asshole exist that suits me fine.

Aside from CoD4 which is cross platform, and Warhawk which is exclusive, where exactly is the huge catalog of awesomeness for the PSN to give me anything 'fun' for free? There are a metric ton of great online games that can only be had on XBL. Maybe should worry a little more about putting out something great to play on their free network instead of throwing stones from their dissapointing online catalog.

Grimlock: Did I say that XBL caused good games to happen? For the sake of semantics, let me clarify that I mean a variety of good games USE Xbox Live, and a far greater amount of customers ALSO USE it. The amount of users is not irrelevant. It increases the chances of playing against a wider amount of people, ensures there's less chance of seeing the same dipshit twice, and gives lesser played a games a chance of still finding enough people to play against.

Like I said, if the PSN gives me that I have no loyalty to Microsoft and will gladly stop paying for an inclusive experience that Sony would be providing gratis.

I play COD4 and Resistance online, I'm having a lot of fun, and I am glad I don't have to pay for it. I am sure XBL has tons more features, but I don't need to boast my achievements to anyone else etc. etc.

But PSN is still not unified accross the globe, and that's a stupid problem. Currently, AFAIK, US COD4 players still cannot join online games with European players, because Sony Europe is holding things back (as in, not releasing the patch to public. I guess they are still having fun with the LAN play in their offices and forgot to hit the send button :P )

Well I played COD4 online on my friends PS3 and it was just as fun as playing the 360 version online but much more free. So I think Sony is probably right.

I haven't played much PS3 online, but what exactly does Live do that PSN doesn't other than achievements (which don't matter, at all)?

i've yet to play any games on my PS3 online so i can't comment on the their servers, i don't know if microsoft uses the fees they charge for live to make the online gaming as good as possible,i hope they would but with microsoft i doubt it.

I <3 my PS3, but its online portion lives in the Xbox 360's shadow. You truly get what you pay for in this case.

Having said that, the 360 could learn a thing or two about craftsmanship from the Sony camp. Here, it lives in the PS3's shadow.

Ya know, if it was a stab at Microsoft, now wouldn't be the time to make one. Sony has yet to come out with any mind blowing games and the good ones are mostly multi-platformers. But the ad is right to a point, saying that anything that is free, you don't have to expect anything amazing because your not entitled to it by paying, however, people who pay for their online service like xbl, expect a greater gaming experience and right now xbl has that which is probably why Sony doesn't charge anything because they know that microsoft's online service is more reliable, but im not sure in what ways it is exactly better since the premise is online gaming like Grimlock said.
