WipEout HD: Now with intrusive, sluggish advertising! photo

The most common argument you ever see during a debate about in-game advertising is one I tend to agree with myself: It's okay so long as the adverts don't negatively impact the gameplay. So, what do we say about WipEout HD, a game that was recently updated to include adverts which double the loading times?

The latest patch now forces players to watch a commercial before each race, courtesy of the fine marketing folks at Double Fusion. Before the update, races took eight seconds to load. Now they take sixteen. This is more than an in-game billboard or Solid Snake carrying an iPod in his pocket. This is a game basically being screwed with in order to push commercials over gameplay.

I really don't care for that at all.

It's not like we are getting advertises directly onto the XMB/Dashboard ,the day that happens we'll all know for sure that we're collectively getting buttfucked !

Whilst licensing problems prevent the UK from receiving the PSN video store, it also meanswe have yet to suffer from these so called 'buttfucks'.

However, I still think it's much ado about nothing. They are a couple of seconds long and look to provide something interesting to watch during a loading screen.

Plus it means Studio Liverpool can afford to make more expansion packs like the fucking sweet FURY DLC!

This is...something. I don't even have a word for it.
Every other word that I commonly use, like "baffling" or "ridiculous" or "f*cking retarded" don't even begin to scratch the surface of how horrible this idea is.

Glad I wasn't planning on buying it anyway. Also glad that there seems to be a negative correlation between the game's quality to begin with and the presence of ads, so since most of them suck anyway, I guess I can't call it boycotting. Only exception was Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Sigh...

Yeah, but fuck you guys, this game cost 20 dollars, the expansion more than doubled the content, and it cost an extra ten. This is one of my favorite PS3 games, and I think we can cut Sony some slack on it. I mean, I basically bought this game brand new for half price, I'll sit through 8 seconds of commercial for that.

I have this game to thank for my decent LSAT score, so I'll defend it to the death.

Yeah, I'll take ads in the context of a game that logically supports ads. Cramming them in where they don't belong is just freakin' retarded. The ads are just extra padding to make someone up the corporate ladder happy, but at the expense of betraying fans of the series.

Game companies, lemme break it down for you.

Bridge+Gasoline+Match = In game ads that don't belong.

Though I guess the next ratchet and clank game will have sponsorship by Craftsman.

Or I can expect Kratos to be using Trojan condoms when he bones the ladies.

When people complain about ads on web pages I tend to defend the process... websites are free, in essence, and ads make for revenue, which means better web pages.

This? This is complete bullshit.

When you pay for a game, you do not deserve to see an ad... not even one ad in the actual game. At the start like a DVD? MAYBE. In the game? NO. Completely ridiculous. I hope consumer response is tough, fast and clear.

Actually the load times are exactly the same , that I double checked during my review( I was getting ready to write it down as a negative but the time checked out as the same)but because of the uproar over ads in the new xbox experience( and by uproar I mean you sat their and took it)I fully expected stuff like this to happen sooner or later, I'm expecting Wii ad channel by the end of the year(no joke).

but it doesn't affect gameplay so I ignore it like every other loading screen.

I'm not calling you a liar, Black Nexus, but this video shows a clear difference in how long it takes for you to get to the action with and without ads. Perhaps they quickly changed it after people made a fuss?

Also, they already have an ad channel on the Wii. It's called the Nintendo channel.

Beyond the fact that I don't actually have the game, I honestly support ads in games as long as the price shows it. So far, I'm not seeing any price drops being mentioned, nor do I see any mention of additional DLC (free or otherwise) helping to back up their patch case. Until I hear otherwise, this is indeed bull.

well that kinda does'nt help, theres a bit of a difference in the time between the first time you load a road and the second and third times (ive damn near jumped right into a match) you do it, Ive noticed that ad only seems to pop up during that first load and Ive never been hit during subsequent loads ( I tested this while going for the liverly liberation trophy, as I was curious myself), but the moment I load another track that load and ad pops up again.

I just think people never paid attention to that load until now that the ad poped up.but I wished in that video he had showed how many times he picked that event.

I'll test it again myself when I get the free time but until then I gotta beleive what my watch told me.

I thought the longer load times had to do with the additional content. Shame because the game's quite good aside from the longer load times.

But I'm sure Jim's going to rush in and disparage the entire Wipeout series by giving Fury a 3 or 4 out of ten, as though it's representative of how all of the Destructoid community views Wipeout. Where were you guys when Wipeout HD was released? I don't remember ads in that, and personally I enjoyed it more than the previous Gran Turismo games.

Wipeout is an underrated series. You should've praised it before they had to resort to ads to make up for the lack of sales.

wwwwwwwait now... I actually had the demo to try and was pretty interested in picking it up in a slow gaming cycle because I like this kind of stuff... Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't paying the 20 for the game and 10 for expansion sort of, you know, protection from being forced to watch ads before playing? It's like paying for a service like hulu and still having to sit through the repetitive ads.

I think this reaction is a bit much, especially if the biggest complaints are coming from people who haven't played the game. I get the State Farm or whatever add maybe once every 5-10 load times since all the rest of the load screens are play-tips. The fact it is a racing game where fictional companies are displaying their adds everywhere I don't really think it is too out of character. Yeah of course the principal of it all is a bit messed, but honestly it doesn't bother me since it meshes with the atmosphere of sponsored races and the add is pretty hip/non-intrusive. The game is still awesome, there is no "suffering", and it's really just unfortunate for whoever decides to not pick it up.

@Dreamsower: "especially if the biggest complaints are coming from people who haven't played the game."

If by "haven't played the game" you assume "have no experience with the series", then yeah, I agree. If you're trying to take a moral high-ground ala Waquan: STFU.

Many of us have Wipeout on the backburner simply BECAUSE we've played the older incarnations, know what to expect, and are fully willing to put down the money when the newer, more interesting shinies have become less shiny (see also: Fat Princess) and we have some extra cash and a free weekend. We've come to expect the Wipeout series not to have adverts before gameplay, and this is cheapening the experience for extra revenue on a game that has no distribution costs like a boxed game... so why rush the income? Wipeout HD and expansion pack will at least break even, even without ads.. why add ads and piss off the core that know it's already a good series?

What dreamsower said
don't get me wrong this sucks true , but your gonna write off one of the best games created and one of the better expansion packs made because of THAT, Don't be f*cking stupid.

last time I checked people pay out their ass for x box live and get hit with ads religiously, do you see me getting rid of my 360 because of that, no because THAT WOULD BE F*CKING RETARDED.

express your distaste for it but truth be told if you wanted this kind of thing to stop the time for action was long ago, don't bitch now because its far too late for it to matter, and don't dismiss a dev who sweated blood to actually give us a good expansion instead of a cheap cash in because of a decision his boss probably made.

the only thing that does is discourage hard working devs and make you just as much of an idiot as the guy who put in adds in the first place. this IS a stupid decision BUT it should have no affect on your decision to purchase this game or expansion.

Seriously I expected alot more from you guys.

@elysse I really don't like being told to "STFU" for stating my opinion. "haven't played" would have been better worded as "experienced the new adverts" because the amount of viewing of the ad I have had has been sparse and I have been playing it a LOT this past weekend.

That being said I am hardly paying attention during load screens anyways and I didn't notice the load times being any longer. The whole point I made is that if this "ad debacle" is the only reason you aren't playing/buying this game when you would've otherwise then you're missing out. Sure this may set a bad precedent for in game advertising but the game experience itself is still intact.

Also I am not "trying to take a moral high-ground", especially seeing as how condemning this corporate-action seems to be a clearer moral high-ground stance anyways. I really just don't care cause I still have fun with the game.

The Wipeout franchise has been avoided by the masses for a while now, and you're wondering why they (the developers) are including ads to make up for their losses? I agree that the move is entirely pointless and will ultimately damage them, but that's not the point. The ship's already sinking, and this is their indication of that.

I'll blame whoever the hell I want on this matter. And yes, I blame everyone who's decided not to support this series because it's stuff everyone's seen before...you know, like Megaman, just like in your avatar, that hasn't changed a damn bit since its first incarnation on the NES and little dipshits like you line up to chew on that shit every time a new title is released but ABSOLUTELY refuse to open your minds to other franchises that didn't start out on a Nintendo system (that you may actually find more enjoyable). I can think of HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of franchises from Gran Turismo to Forza that millions upon millions of people are willing to pay an arm and a leg for when the latest version hits the store---and, what does that draw usually come down to? I think that goes without saying, really.

It's disgusting. On the other hand, we have Wipeout HD, which offers as much content as a retail game but at a cheaper price (at least 30 hours of gameplay for the singleplayer alone) and all of you dipshits would rather pay $20-30 for the next Megaman Anniversary collection full of games you've already beaten from the NES up? Speaking of stupid...

By the way, Fat Princess doesn't offer anywhere near the amount of content you get with Wipeout HD, let alone Fury. That's not to say it's a bad game, but it doesn't offer a whole lot in terms of content, especially if you’re only in the position to download it and not try it out online.

Also, just because something has a different name doesn't mean it hasn't been done a hundred fucking times before under different titles.
Dreamsower's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/04/2009 00:38

@Waquan Wipeout isn't some victim of neglection, just because people may not get into a franchise doesn't mean they need to be open minded. People play different things and have different preferences. I am not really sure why you are comparing it to all these other successful franchises as if it's unfair that Wipeout doesn't get much love. Enjoy and appreciate the games that you like, you don't need to force them on other people. I really don't see how your points are relevant to the addition of advertisements in Wipeout HD unless you had some quantitative proof that Studio Liverpool was losing money on the franchise and decided to add them to boost revenue out of their sinking ship.

That being said you cited Megaman as not changing/evolving much, I may be wrong but hasn't Wipeout retained relatively the same mechanics/gameplay throughout it's many iterations as well?

Do you really need to state that people have different preferences? Are you this blog's Captain Obvious?

If the people in this forum weren't interested in Wipeout they wouldn't be in an uproar about it. The main complaint I've read on this very blog's been that Wipeout hasn't changed. I gave examples of series people choose to support financially that haven't changed much. Why support these and not others? Why single out Wipeout?

Full HD, 60FPS, gorgeous track and ship designs, fun modes (including multiplayer) (holy mother of god, ZONE BATTLE)...an overall exhilarating experience. I thought the ads were a small annoyance, but it's quite miniscule compared to the game experience.
