Winds of change? PS3 game tops Japanese sales list photo

Hard to believe it has happened this early, but I suppose the Japanese really love Virtua Fighter because the 5th version of the game has made its mark as the first PlayStation 3 title to break the country's top 10 in sales. Though it was closely trailed by a bunch of Nintendo titles, it certainly is the first really good sign for Sony since launching the monolith. Is this a sign of things to come?

Sega's popular fighting title, a day-one release game for Europe, has stormed the charts selling just over 48,000 copies. It's closest rival is Nintendo's Wii Sports, selling close to 46,000 units. The rest of the top five is made up of Nintendo titles Wii Play, More Brain Age and New Super Mario Bros.

Nice to know someones buying a PS3 with a game this time ! - Unlike Resistance Fall Of Man which Sony touted as being the best seller ( it hit ONLY number 40 at its peak on the charts of best sellers ) and only about 1/6 of PS3 owners even bought it.

Well, it could be a sign of things to come...if it lasts for more than a week...and the PS3 had any other new games...so I doubt it.

I suspect the real good sellers for PS3 will be Assasins Creed -- maybe UT 2007 .. ( AND selling better on Xbox 360 since the user base is alot larger )

They only moved 2,000 more units than Wii Sports! C'mon, this isn't exactly a milestone.

i'll get this for my X360....
plus the PS2 still has some great titles
coming to it (God of War 2, Burnout)

still, PS3 needs lots more titles.
i saw a lonely PS3 sitting at Best Buy on Sunday.
I almost bought it but there was really nothing to get for it.
really, what else does PS3 offer that other systems don't?
even blu-ray is caught up in this hi-def format war.
(though it is winning now)
maybe in June i'll get one....
i said maybe

This is odd... I've heard that the sales for VF5 in Japan were fairly disappointing from several sources.

Put it this way, had VF5 come out the week before, it would have ended up somewhere around 6th in the sales chart.

They are...it was just a slow week...I can't remember where I read it, but VF in the past sold in the hundreds of thousands in their first week...

I can't say as I'm surprised by the fact the VF5 is selling well in Japan. Whether it's enough to keep the PS3 afloat, well, that's another question altogether. With VF5 releasing on the 360, it might not be that big of a boon to the PS3 Stateside.

So a newly released game "storms the charts" during a week in which there is really nothing new on the market.

Even the terminology "storms the charts" is dubious. 48k copies isn't much. Especially when you consider the fact that it's closest competitor is effectively a 2-month old fun tech demo.

As other have stated similarly, I find it funny that this game is "storming the charts" when it outsold a game (Wii Sports) that has been out for 3 months by only 2,000 copies. With how the sales have apparently held strong for Wii Sports this long, I can only see Wii Sports outselling VF5 in the weeks/months once the VF5 hype dies down.

Come on! We're talking about a nation where people buy DS's like they buy toilet paper. There is absolutely no logic as to why people in Japan buy what they buy.... If this was released on any day Gundam was coming out for ANY platform, this wouldn't even make the top 100.

The winds aren't changing. Sure, VF5 hit number one in its debut week, but it was also the only PS3 game to crack the top 50 this week. In comparison, there were 7 Wii games in the top 50 (and 33 DS games, but that's another story altogether). Also, as many have pointed out, VF5 was supposed to be one of the PS3's killer apps and barely managed to outsell Wii Sports - a game that has been out for 11 weeks.

There is barely anyone left in the arcades playig Virtua Fighter nowadays, probably because of this. Damn you Sony, you're stealing away my competition!
