William Shatner goes after Shatter devs over a joke photo

Star Trek legend and singing sensation William Shatner was stirred into legal motion when his lawyers heard that Shatter was offering a downloadable level that used his likeness and included a remix of his "Mr. Tambourine Man" cover. This content caused Shatner's legal team to send a cease & desist letter to developer Sidhe. The only problem was the fact that no such level exists, and it was just a joke that Sidhe had nothing to do with.

Sidhe managing director Mario Wynands responded to Shatner's lawyers, laying the verbal smackdown on their C&D attempt:

The GameConsole 'report' you reference is what is commonly referred to on the internet as a 'joke'. The article is a parody of our game, and has no basis in reality in that it does not in any way reflect our intentions for further development of the Shatter IP or relate to any official statement we have made relating to the game.

We have the upmost respect for Mr William Shatner and the licensing process, and if we had any intent of using rights related to either Mr Shatner, Star Trek, or Tambourine Man (which we do not) we would do so using the appropriate channels.

Please respond acknowledging your receipt and understanding of this message, and confirming you have notified both Paramount and Bob Dylan's representatives of your misunderstanding.
Ah, lawyers and their overzealous desperation to protect anything and everything under the Sun. Always nice when their eager little hands get righteously smacked with a hot teaspoon.

What about the William Shatner Bomberman DLC stages? And the Ninja Turtles where he's actually a boss.

Quick, someone start a thread on SA. I smell a photoshop friday.

Yeah I was following this on twitter. Sidhe said in the end the lawyers were good sports about it. Could they do something else then?

William Shatner is a self absorbed arrogant douche. I don't care if he was Captain Kirk. I've seen him on several late night talk shows where he preempted other guests and host segments because apparently he's too important to be second banana.

I can understand why George Takei didn't invite him to his wedding. Bill probably would have thought he should be the center of attention.

Also, LOL!

Well after he refused to appear in the latest Star Trek movie because he wasn't the center of the film this does not surprise me at all.

The fact that it doesn't exist isn't going to stop a bunch of lawyers.

"We have the upmost respect for Mr William Shatner..."

Can't they be held libal for sending joke response letters? I mean, even Bill would laugh at that line.

I really like William Shatner. His role as Denny Crane is awesome and he seems to have a real sense of humour whenever I've seen him interviewed. He did a fantastic comedy routine where he makes fun of himself in a satire of the famous "I am Canadian" ad that was hilarious. Link He's a prolific writer, a bad singer... and yeah, he seems to have an "I don't care attitude" that I kind of like.

I think that he would personally find this hilarious... and would probably endorse it! :)
(still, lawyers are paid to do their job, and he likely had little to do with the lawsuit).

Wow... whats up with Sony and WTF adverts? Have you seen the one with the alien for the PS2? And not forgetting the PS3 advert with the doll that comes to life and cries.
