Will Wii sales catch up to the 360 by 2008? photo

We've received various tips about the latest findings on VGCharts, an independent news service that tracks global purchasing trends of popular gaming products. The Console Wars chart is certainly notable: The Wii appears to be on a fast-track to the top spot, already grossing over five million users -- not too far behind the Xbox 360's nine million mark.

Meanwhile, Sony's uber-expensive hardware is trailing behind at 2 million. This makes perfect sense, as only a few of us can afford to know what living really is like. A few more games in that collection should spur that, but we all know that hasn't been the case so far. (No pressure, guys.)

Given the rate of acceleration and the length of time these systems have been on the shelves (and sold out from them!) how do you think this is going to end in 2008? Do you think Wii sales can topple the number one spot by 2008 or do you think there will be a slow down?  The fact that Regginator hasn't played played the imminent Mario and Metroid cards makes believe that it is very much in the realm of possibility after Q4.

It's worth a discussion, especially in light of the ever-rumored 360 price drop and the quasi-confirmed "premium" Wii with DVD playback. If anyone is near a Redmond dumpster, can you kindly ask the analyst inside to weigh in?

I think it is possible. I mean the Wii is still selling more than strong and I believe this will continue for at LEAST a few more months.

So not to be a fanboy or anything but I believe this is either possible or they will come in at a CLOSE 2nd and possibly win out in 2009.

Wii better get some more games....
then again, that system is aimed more a kiddies so
if they release more cartoon/anime related games it will
sell a ton.
i'm just waiting on Mario Kart & Mario Galaxy

PS3...wake me up when MS4 and Tekken 6 are out...zzzzZZZZZ

I believe Wii sales have still got legs, since I still have not seen one around town. PS3 sales will accelerate throughout the year as they release games worth purchasing the system for. I think it will take a rev B 360 with improvements or a price drop for 360 sales to increase above the previous year.

is it just me or does it seem like the 7th generation console war is off to a bit of a slow start?

also when some decent games come out on the ps3 I also expect it to beat the 360.

I don't see the PS3 catching up with the 360 till their prices are about the same and there are quite a few exclusives for the PS3. As we all know it could be quite a while before the PS3 can meet that criteria. I can see the wii being in the number one spot if Nintendo can keep from having a software drought.

The only other game I've played on my Wii besides Wii Sports is Madden '07. My roommate rented it and I'm not a football fan, so whatever. They definitely need some more games on there. I'm still waiting on EA to make an NHL game where the wiimote is my stick. That would be an automatic purchase.

As for the 360, I'm buying one next when I get the cash for one and for the PS3, not interested until MGS4.

I believe most of us on here won't really affect the "war" since so many of us will eventually have all 3. If Nintendo does go the kiddie route besides a few titles, they will probably be a close second to 360 if not #1, since parents can actually play the games with their kids and enjoy them.

I have a feeling that the PS3 will lose some exclusives in the next couple years. If MGS4 ever goes 360, I am NEVER buying a PS3.

I think the Wii will catch up to the 360 by '08 if for no other reason than casuals are buying it. Game sales on the other hand I don't know.

I really don't see the PS3 surpassing the 360 EVER though. It will probably catch up to be close behind whenever they manage to drop the price (which again I don't see until late '08 at the earliest) but because of the high price tag, lack of exclusives, and the fact that BluRay players will be much cheaper by then, I really don't see it ever overtaking it.

I don't think Wii will catch up by 2008. In 2008, probably, but not before then.

My predictions for at the end of 2007:
360: 16 million
Wii: 13.5 million
PS3: 9.5 million

I SO don't see the 360 going to 16 Million by 2008. Granted Halo 3 is coming out and I don't think we will see this "price drop" until AFTER Halo 3 has been out for awhile. That is my opinion, but I think 16 million is a stretch.

ShinAmano

360 SHIPPED over 10 million awhile back. That is why the market is flooded with 360s (there is a large pile next to the even larger pile of PS3's at my local BestBuy and it has been like that since before Christmas)

If "Wii Health Pack" is what I think it is -- a fitness game in the style of "Brain Age," there will be no stopping the Wii...that game will SELL systems. Miis + Wiimote fitness + overweight Americans = HUGE SUCCESS.

It is coming out in 2007, so yes, Wii will overtake the 360 before 2008.

Hmm... guys, Halo 3? you seriously think the bar is going to stay in 10 million? (specially if the price drop occurs?)

I think the Wii will hit the 9 million mark by the end of the year (when Mario hits in xmas) but I dont see it outselling the xbox 360, I just dont, casual gaming is not that big here in America.

Of course it is going to kick everyones butt in Japan this year ... until Final Fantasy XIII hits at least.

IMO the WII is going to level off a lot unless they can bring some great games to the table, nothing I have seen so far looks that good. The WII has only 1 game above a 9 on gamerankings.

Undoubtingly Halo 3 will move systems but I think more of the hardcore Halo fans ALREADY have a 360. I have friends who play Halo all the time and have 0 interest in a 360.

Yes Halo sold alot (around 5 million and around 7 million), but I wouldn't expect to see millions of 360's sold over this one game...hundreds and thousands, YES, millions, [b]NO[b].

Well.. yes, Mario and smash bros will sell Wii's (specially in Japan)= but will that alone help the Wii beyond the 9 million mark? smash brawl doesnt even use the Wiimote, so is exactly the same than the GC version. (maybe with internet online which is big plus, but thats just a maybe.)

I know a lot of people that havent bought a 360 because a.-is expensive. b.-They only want to play halo 3. so Yes, I think halo 3 (and the price drop) will boost sales dramatically. And I do mean that in millions.

You also have to remember a slight detail, both Sony and MS have been threatening about pulling their own Wii motion sensors for some time and that may materialize by the end of THIS year. If it works, that could seriously damage the Wii's popularity in the short to medium run.
BlindsideDork's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/05/2007 13:48

I don't think MS will drop the price until after Halo3. The only exception I can see is them making a new 360 with 120 harddrive and hdmi out and make that the PRO system and the core system is the 20 harddrive.

I could see how the motion sensing controls could spell bad news but there is the majority of people who dont have HDTVs and they are under the impression that 360 and PS3 require HDTVs, they would be more likely going to Nintendo.

But don't play that Smash Brawl is same thing line cause it isn't. New charcaters, new special/super moves, and new levels...theoretically that is the definition of a sequel. Halo 3 is new levels, some new characters, new weapons. They both are getting graphical upgrades (will have a greater one) so what differentiates them besides genre of game?

So Smash Brawl ISN'T the same as the GC version.

BlindsideDork: Touche with the Smash Bros, Halo 3 comparison, you are right.. except for one detail, kids and casuals are expecting Smash Bros for the Wii to use the Wiimote. (which was my point)

BlindsideDork: Crap.. I need an edit button, your HDTV theory is ok, but does not hold water, most of the people I know with an xbox 360 have no HDTV. I mean a simple "Would this work on my tv?" asked to a store clerk clears that up immediately. I seriously doubt someone willing to buy a next gen console wouldnt check if they need to expend an extra $1000 for it.

The main reason there aren't more Wii games announced is because many companies underestimated the system. Now that it's doing extremely well in both the US and Japan, more and more developers are going to be focusing on the Wii. This is going to equal more and more 3rd party support for the system. Nintendo's notorious for keeping titles secret until well into development, I'd bet you anything there's quite a few games being worked on right now we know nothing about.

PS3 will be certainly getting more and more titles, but the high cost of entry could be it's downfall. I would imagine it's going to stay in third place until price drops make it more accessible, and a smaller userbase could likely mean publishers shy away from making lots of titles until they have a chance to sell better. Sony could very likely N64 themselves this generation if they aren't careful. I think they would have been much better off making a system about as powerful as the 360 for half the price of the PS3.

I second Summa's point. I'm really excited to see the next evolution of the Mario franchise, but seriously, Smash Bros. Brawl is the big game of 2007. I'm sure that card is worth more to Reggie than Mario or Metroid simply because it's a widely-popular game that is accessible to both casual and hardcore gamers and was Gamecube's biggest party game.

"I think they would have been much better off making a system about as powerful as the 360 for half the price of the PS3."

I know is hard to believe but actually the xbox 360 is as powerful as the PS3, perhaps even more.

If you are wondering how they did it, heres the short explanation: they used GPU power to balance lack of CPU power, (with some extra memory to help caching too) When compared they both run at the same speed. (unless you use 1080p which requires faster framerates, but almost no one has that kind of HDTV or cares for that matter) Since most next gen games TAX the GPU almost as much as the CPU, it was a pretty logical decission.

And the pricing? well theres no mystery, Xbox has no HD-DVD or bluray, which drops $100-$200 bucks from the tag. Not to mention the developing price which is significantly lower. (hence all developers flocking from bluray production)

I don't think the 360 is really gonna slow down much, too many good games coming out for it. The PS3 will, in my opinion, increase in sales once a new slew of games comes out for it, more than the average games we've seen as of late that is. I think the Wii will definitely continue to rise in sales although I'm sure at some point it will level off. The key for the Wii will be games that utilize it's Wiimote abilities, and more than just golfing and fishing.

PS3: Getting is first good games this year. Maybe like 10 of them. I'd say thats pretty fair, that out of the 70 or so games 10 will be A titles.

XBOX360: Getting its biggest round of games this year, a good lot of which are amazing. The ones I'm interested in that aren't multiplatform:
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Blue Dragon
Mistwalker
Halo 3
Alan Wake
Too Human
Fable 2
Forza 2

And these are just the AAA titles I'm thinking of right now. There are also TONS of multiplatform games coming out this year, which I believe the edge goes to the 360 since its cheaper and there is no discernable difference between the various version (and in GTAIV's case, its even BETTER on the 360 with added support).

If a price cut comes before this next holiday season, the 360 will be a runaway success.

Then again, I'm only in it for the games, and like to look at situations fairly. Right now, Microsoft is the only company whose console I can get ahold of that doesn't have its speech constantly muffled by a big ole foot.

I don't think it is right of you to not only INCLUDE Too Human in on a list of games coming out this year(it has been in production since PS1 days and last build was bad) but also games that you claim are going to be SO GOOD!
Now the game could be good but as of right now saying that it will be AWESOME is just borderline or even just flat out fanboy talk. Until we see a GOOD build of the game, don't call it a must have title anymore.

No... the novelty of the Wii will have worn off by the end of the year. Mainstream media will no longer care about it and will write it off almost as fast as Beanie Babies and The Segway.

The normal people that purchased the console bought so as an impulse buy. These aren't the people that keep up with games or are aware of the new games coming out. The 'normal' people will have had such a drought of games that I doubt they'll even know where there WII is.

As an avid gamer for over 15 years I can honestly say that I think the Wii is a neat proposition. But it needs more than Mini Games and Tech Demos, and it needs it quickly. The impulse buyers aren't going to loose all the excitement that they had and forget about it like they did there Tamagotchi. I've owned every console thats come out in the past *FOREVER*, so I'm not trying to Dog the Wii outright. I owned one, I waited 8hrs outside for it, and I sold it. It simply doesn't offer anything NEW, it only offers different and gimmicky controls. If all you've played your whole life is Mario, Zelda and Metroid games then I'm sure the WII gets you wet. But go play Oblivion, Gears, or any other platformer thats come out now adays.

You can disagree with me all you want, but I'm not some Nintendo Loyalist, Nintendo never game me a hand-job to talk worlds about them. I love there older consoles, and even got into the Cube a little bit. But releasing a newer Gamecube with a shoddy online component, and the same games we've had on our DS or Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 for the past 6 years and only adding the movement gimmick simply isn't enough.

No... the Wii isn't going to catch up, and if it ever did, its not like its a viable console for the true gamer. Its like owning a toaster and a regular oven. One can cook a world of things, the other, just toasts your bread.

Fixxerx: Amazing, great comment a bit bleak but good.

I put it this way, The Wii is going to be popular for Kids, casuals and Nintendo loyals, but gamers and hardcore gamers have to start looking elsewhere. And like I already mentioned motion controls are not going to be exclusive to the Wii in the near future.

To be honest Im looking forward to Nintendo's next console, the Wii was an experiment and it succeded at a certain level. the next Wii (and the next DS) should be really worth getting now that Nintendo has the cash to deliver a good rounded console not aimed only toward casuals but the entire gamer spectrum (at least I hope).

Also it might be too early to count off the PS3 FFXIII and MGS4 are showing up this year (and theres talk of a price drop although subtle) thats going to be a real tough nut to break in Japan.

FiXXXerX: That was a great comment. I couldn't have said it better myself. However, I still think if the Wii doesn't catch up it will come closer than you think.

It's going to be great seeing how it all plays out. Thankfully I have a vast PS2 library to keep me occupied... for now.

PS3 will never catch up with either !
But Wii could pass 360.. it'll be close ..

Look at PS2 ! The 129 dollar price tag - people like cheap !
I hear MS has plans to lower 360 price around Christmas.. lowering it even 50 dollars would be a dagger, imagine a 100 dollar price drop.. 360 has been selling faster the last 5 months.
