Remember hearing about that Sonic fan film a while back? To refresh your memory, Eddie Lebron, the director of the not-half-bad Mega Man movie, is working on a 10-to-20-minute short film starring that other boy in blue. It will be live-action with a CGI lead, brought to life by none other than the one true voice of Sonic, Jaleel White.
A trailer has finally been released -- you'll have to visit the official site to view it, though. First impressions: what is with that Sonic model? What is that thing? It looks like a deranged Easter Bunny! But the orchestrated Green Hill theme is incredible, and hearing Urkel again as though he never left is a total fanboy trip. His voice may be a little less whiny than back in the day, but that's not a problem, is it?
Mega Man proved that Lebron knows what buttons to push, so we'll see if lightning strikes twice.

Why the shit do people care about Sonic? He's a poorly designed mascot from a company that was afraid of losing out to their rivals for not having an equivalent masthead figure to pin a franchise on. Difference between Sonic and Mario? Mario wasn't made as a franchise, but one was created off the back of sublime controls and masterful level design. Sonic, however, was a cynical attempt to create a franchise. 1 was a graphical revelation, but strip the fancy asthetics away and your left with a very poorly designed game with little variety within it.
Discuss.
Now hes made Sonic look like SackBoy... Ive got no expectations for this
Wasn't in the trailer.
Totally agree. So stoked to hear him doing Sonic again... even if that Sonic model is terrifying.
Seriously, what the FUCK is up with that Sonic model?
@Here's Some Weapons
A few bars from Green Hill can be heard before Jaleel starts talking, from about the 0:35 -0:40 mark.
I strongly disagree. While It's true that marketing of the Sega system portrayed a franchise built only to rival that of "Nintendon't", it became a strong contender in it's own right by constantly releasing quality action, music, and graphics at a somewhat shorter length. I'd dare to even say the more appropriate length, since a lot of the level design in the Mario franchise were simply slight alterations of the previous level, with enough powers/variables to make it seem fresh. With Sonic, the level design was drastically different and each level was fresh and challenging, even within the same Zone. Both have the best examples of platforming for their time, with a minimal story. I really wish you and @llort het would stop playing the "What If" game. Strip any game of something that makes it good and of course it's gonna make it worse.
But it could be bluer
Is it weird that I'm suddenly interested, if only to find out if he'll eat chili dogs and whine, "I'm waaaaaiting?"
An aside: don't expect Ryan Drummond to voice Sonic again. He said in the past he cannot do the voice (recorded) because Sega owns the rights to that voice... if that makes sense. He'll do it for you as long as it isn't recorded.
I think it's pretty solid tbqh.
Why the hell is he so dark?
Erkel fuggin' rocks. No questions.
False. It was all bad. It was as bad as bad can be.
With all due respect to a fellow gamer, your 'Strongly disagree' sounds a lot like agreement.
Lets talk a look at a couple of your points;
'slight alterations of the previous level, with enough powers/variables to make it seem fresh.'
So that would be variety within the games established framework then. If it 'seemed fresh' then thats good, right? Some say variety is the spice of life, some live off a diet of regurgitated mediocrity. Your way of life is obviously different to mine. :P
'Strip any game of something that makes it good and of course it's gonna make it worse.'
You are missing the point here. Graphics MADE the 16bit Sonic games. To me (and to many people here I hope): Gameplay > Graphics. Once technology moved on and 2D fell out of vogue, Sonic struggled to remain relevant as evidenced by the many, many poor iterations since the Megadrive (UK). Sonic is a one trick pony that just couldn't keep up with the pack. Ironic really for a character all about speed. I would also dispute that the games are challenging to anyone with two hands.
Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the 16bit Sonic games at the time, but I am not being blinded by nostalgia and I recognise that for all their sometimes inspired level design and, yes you are right, fantastic music (a Sega strong point - Magical Sound Shower, anyone?) they were repetative to the point of zzzzz.
However, I would like to apologise for posting off topic on this thread. It's just something had to get off my chest. :)
Respectfully yours.
I've loved a lot of cheesy and lame stuff in my childhood, but SONIC... he just feels so forced!
Jim made an episode about that topic. "To cool to be cool"
Agreed 100 %
1. The Sonic model in the trailer isn't the final model, so chillax.
2. FUCKYEAR URKEL :D
I didn't grow up playing sonic. I never watched the cartoon. So I guess this trailer wouldn't be for me, but if the sonic movie were truly great it should appeal to me as well, shouldn't it?
for starters, I have no beef with the model, other than it may be too dark for the environment it is placed. That dark shade of blue looks poor on a black background..
whoever wrote the script for this trailer, needs to be shot. Is sonic supposed to speak like teenager? If so then my apologies. All I got from this trailer is that sonic is upset he can't "chill" because Egg man stole that type of world from him and now Sonic is going to fill us in on the details of how the place used to be a place you could kick back, how it was ruined and subsequently saved. ???
im pretty sure that the sonic games struggled in 3d because of a lack of direction more so than graphics. sonic wasnt the only classic series that was hurt by the switch to 3d.. im pretty sure castlevania being bad in 3d had nothing to do with it being a one trick pony that was all about graphics.
i for one played sonic for its gameplay, music, and graphics. the thing i loved about sonic (after the first game) was the fact that i was required to explore the level in order to fully beat the game. you could shallowly zip through the game ignoring the emeralds and get an ending.. or you could "100 percent" the game. the level design was great though.. i loved dashing through a section that required little control, only to see the bottom of a platform moving away from me. i would then go back and then actually have to platform to get to the top of the stage... by the time sonic 3 came out, i would spend hours running around all of the levels seeing what all they packed in there. it was pretty great that you only had maybe 2 minutes worth of level in one play through, but probably 10x that if you explored the whole thing. then, playing as tails and seeing what all was around if i flew added more fun, and the hidden parts of the stage that sonic had to spin dash to find. once they added the hidden warp rings that would send you to bonus stages or give you 50 rings if you collected all of the emeralds, i was in heaven. you also didnt collect the emeralds to just get a good ending, you got a faster, invincible version of your character. it was pretty much the ultimate reward.. and i dont recall any platformer providing that. adding knuckles into the stages was also a plus. having 3 characters that could access things that the other characters couldnt also expanded the replayability for the series.
my personal favorite game was sonic cd. the levels were more maze-like, and lost some of the flow they had started to achieve by the time sonic 3 arrived.. but it made sense being that you had to find a sign to travel to the past, and then find 2 machines in each level to perfectly complete the game. that coupled with the usual chaos emerald hunt made this game the most meaty game in the series. the platforming wasnt a joke in this game either, due to the more maze-like stage design. like usual, there were gimmmicks found in the levels to keep them fresh.. but the exploration is really what made the game, just like in sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles.
this is what in my opinion made sonic adventure or any 3d sonic game not nearly as good. theyre all very linear and pretty much just have you zoom through them. the whole reason i loved sonic colors was because they brought back the depth to the series. i put 30 hours into that game... and that didnt include cutscenes or running around an island taking trains and talking to humans to beat the game.
so yeah... im sure im not the only one that will say the appeal is in the exploration.
