Will NHL 10 be the most emotional sports game ever? photo

Speaking during an E3 demo of EA Sports’ NHL 10, producer David Littman told us of the one thing sports games were lacking the most -- emotion.

"Hockey is one of the sports that has the most emotion," he said.

He points to emotional staples of hockey events, like screaming fans banging glass or the player-on-player fights that often break out on the ice. The game will feature both. But to that last point, NHL 10 will feature fighting for the first time in years, with an interesting twist -- it’s entirely in first-person.

More after the jump.

In the demo we saw, Littman used both analog sticks to throw punches, and to tug and yank on another player’s jersey. According to the NHL 10 producer, fighting is an integral part of the sport, allowing players to let off steam, to pump up the teams involved, and to act as a bit of palate cleanser for the fans. Given that, the fighting mechanic will award the winner’s team with a buff that can re-energize the team, making it more than merely gratuitous violence for violence’s sake.

Advances in the game’s A.I., and the new precision passing -- which lets players use the left analog stick to have more control of the speed and direction of the puck -- should have fans of last year’s game psyched for NHL 10’s release later this year. After all, it was one of the most critically acclaimed sports games of 2008, and Littman is looking to put the franchise in the same league as yearly must-haves like Madden NFL.

"We’re looking to create a dynasty," he says.

The only way it could be more emotional is if both teams are level and there's only time for one more shot, the lights dim down with just two spotlights, one focusing on the player shooting the puck and the other on the goalie (not sure if that's the right term). The players heartbeat can be heard loud, and if he scores then the fans rush onto the rink and lift him up, whereas if he loses he gets beat up by the team and dies. Now that's emotion.

I don't want emotion in the game. I want them to release 3 tigers into the playing field. Fuck yes.

Describing nothing but the fights in the press release is such an American summary of hockey.

At least in video games the Sharks don't always suck starting in April.

Read "The Code". It will let you in on the finer points of fighting in hockey. I am a huge hockey fan, and fighting definitely has its place in the sport. It's not like there is a fight every single game. People tend to blow the whole fighting in hockey way out of proportion. I dunno about this first-person fighting thing though. we will see.

If you want to know more about why fighting is allowed in hockey, try skimming through "The Code". It's a boring book, but there are some insights as to why fighting is "part of the game".

Don't knock hockey. It's my favorite sport by a mile.

I resent that. I am American and while I do enjoy a good fight now and then, it's not the reason I love the sport.

It's true...just before your last game; your best friend the right wing will propel you over a cliff sacrificing himself in the process

So the biggest improvement this year is there's going to be first-person fighting? Lame. I turn fighting off anyway because they popped up too much in my Dynasty mode, and it was annoying. Sucks for the people who buy the game to play hockey as opposed to beating the Christ out of some player. I'll play SFIV for that.

just as long as you can ignore the fight prompt ala Sean Avery and I'll be fine

Fighting happens to be a significant new feature in the game, which is why it is the focus here. The EA Sports guys have a laundry list of tweaks and updates, ones that will be detailed when our sports man, Samit Sarkar, gets his hands on the sticks. :D

And look at Chara. He's just pushing the back of Sergei's head. Joe, don't just stand there. Do something!

I'm so pumped for this game! As great as NHL 09 was, there is a ton of ways for EA to improve the game. BAP mode needs a lot of refinement.

While I'm not the type who watches hockey for the fights, I still like to see them once in a while, especially since the Habs got Laraque ^_^

In any case, I used to avoid fights in NHL games because I thought they were pointless, but it looks like they might actually serve a purpose in '10. Emotion really is a big part of hockey and I'm curious to see what they can do with it. Though it could definitely do without the first person view. That just says "gimmick" all over it.

Passing needed some serious work which is awesome. I really dislike that their trying to put in boosts to your team after fights. This in my mind will end up making fighting a tactical choice during the game, which I'm not sure that it is in real hockey. At least not all the time. I would just hate to make it unbalanced. I for one am not into any sports games that aren't baseball except this one. '09 really is a great game, and I hate that they're starting to mess with intangibles like team attitude and emotion. That in my opinion puts you on the fast track to messing up a sports game. We'll see, but I really think it will be hard to put team emotion into code and make it feel natural.

Actually I'd say it's pretty common to see a coach send out his bruiser when his team is being dominated, hoping a little fight will wake his guys up. Doesn't work often, though.

Although I think I read elsewhere that the emotion thing won't just be about fights. Emotion will also be affected by how often your team is hitting/being hit, skirmishes after the whistle, etc.

I totally agree with you about the balance thing, though. They could easily mess it up and ruin the whole thing.

Will there be soundtrack music that will change during the course of the game in order to drum up the emotions of the players?
