Will Halo 3 win any new fans? photo
     Does it suck?

Hi, I'm Aaron Linde. I'm 23 years old, a Sagittarius, and I'm not a big fan of Halo. Before you mark me off your Christmas card list, lemme explain: I'm not a big fan of console first-person shooters, first and foremost. Unfortunately, Halo is just part of that crew, if not its reigning king. In the last five years or so the console FPS has grown to eclipse other traditional genres, and big-name releases tend to draw the most attention of industry professionals and enthusiasts alike. Bungie's flagship series was instrumental in making it so.

That being said, lately it feels as though not liking Halo is akin to wearing your Slayer t-shirt to the first day of Born-Again summer camp. When word gets out that a free XBLA shmup excites you more than a forthcoming beta of a highly anticipated release -- well, people look at you funny.

With all the talk going around about Halo 3's development and early reports from those on the beta before the public got their hands on it, some would lead us to believe that this is the game to convert the fence-sitters like me. Once I had the Halo 3 beta downloaded, I wondered: how different would it be? Would the game offer anything new to rope in the not-quite-fans? Most importantly, will the beta convince anybody who had been heretofore uninterested in "finishing the fight"?

Hit the jump for my findings.

I like this video comparison of Halo 2 and 3 because they illustrate my difficulty in grasping the reasoning behind the "best game ever" rhetoric that gets kicked around in the wake of the beta's release. Sure, Halo is swell at being exactly what it is: a console first-person shooter. But is there really much by way of revolutionary gameplay going around in console first-person shooters -- hell, even first-person shooters in general?

First, big ups to Halo 3 for being exactly what its predecessors were: a great, great living room game. Get the right crew -- a Nick Brutal, some Ron Workman, maybe a Chris Furniss or two alongside -- and the shenanigans that erupt are extraordinarily fun. This, of course, is mostly an organic result of the sort of bullshitting commonly exchanged between friends, a live-action peanut gallery providing color commentary over the game currently in progress. Xbox Live, as already demonstrated several times over, definitely provides the living-room experience, even if only loosely simulated.

That being said, I can think of several other games that, under similar circumstances, offer a much more satisfying experience than a round or two of team slayer. This factors into my preferences as a gamer -- again, I'm more of a mouse and keyboard sort of dude when it comes to first-person shooters -- but it also has a great deal to do with Halo's development as a series. Where most sequels commonly introduce elements of gameplay to further enhance the experience, I found that aside from the Spartan laser (really, really cool) and the inclusion of equipment (struck me as a little weak), I wasn't really surprised by Halo 3. At all. Put a few drinks in me and I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the beta and the two games that preceded it.

But maybe this is how it's supposed to be, right? Likesay, if you hated Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, it's likely that the sequel wouldn't appeal to you, yeah? Such is typically the nature of sequels. But it doesn't make good business sense to alienate potential customers by carrying on with the same formula game after game, and most developers get it. Hell, I'm one of the guys that didn't like GRAW, but somehow GRAW2 totally resonated with me, mostly due to the cross-com system implementation. It just made everything click. Halo 3, on the other hand, incorporates no such major evolutions -- at least not so much in the multiplayer department. Good news for fans, bad news for the unhitched.

You might chide me for harshin' on what is, essentially, a multiplayer demo. But in an environment in which criticism of Halo's somewhat shallow single player experience is swept aside by responses like "Well, it's about the multiplayer, not the single player", it becomes easier to mark these sorts of shortcomings as prevalent within what will ostensibly become the total Halo 3 experience.

But here's something I've definitely figured out, and it only took me about 6 years to do it: Halo is a social game. It dominates living rooms everywhere for a reason: the hard-wired community and the interaction that takes place within it. For me, this was most obvious when I hooked up with the rest of the Dtoid crew for a few games. Taking this into account, Halo 3's amounting to little more than a gussied-up Halo 2 expansion pack -- which is to say, more of the same -- makes complete sense.

But in the end, it seems as though Bungie is still making Halo for Halo fans, and you can't blame 'em for that; there certainly are enough of them. For those of you who aren't quite switched on to Halo, I'd wager you won't find anything unexpected in 3. You fans, though, you guys are set.

I liked the first two Halos, but I really can't get into the beta for this one. It seems to me like it's just Halo 2 with what could have been downloadable content (maps, weapons, etc.). And getting into a game online is still a pain in the ass.

I get the feeling most people feel forced to play Halo because everyone else does. It was the same with Gears. It has one of, if not the worst multiplayer setups around. And for some reason I can't stop playing it. There's just a certain satisfaction I get from chainsawing my friends or pistol whipping strangers to the point that they start shouting at me through a headset.

The same goes for Halo 3 for me. I got my first stick grenade shot today (Didn't play Halo or Halo 2 much, so sorry if this isn't rare), and I thought "Holy shit that was awesome". I tried doing it again and fell short, but it's the thrill.

Will I see myself playing Halo 3 when it's released. Probably, and the only reason I can think for that is because most of my friends will be. I don't give a monkey's about the storyline, I just wanna kill some Spartans online.

Now that said, I will be playing UT3 more. That's just more my kind of FPS game. Hell, if the rumors are true and Q3:A gets released on XBLA, I'll be playing that over both of these.

I have to say that I basically agree with Linde, for me Halo is another baffling phenomenon, I put it in the same category as Tekken, The Matrix Trilogy, Christianity...basically hugely successful products which fail to demonstrate why they, above all else, have become so popular.

I can handle Halo as a decent game, a bit of high polished fun, a game which just takes all that has gone before and does it bigger and louder (not better). But "Best game ever" I can't think of any credible reason why Halo is singled out as an example of greatness.

Generally I dislike FPS games on consoles. I played them alot on the PC and used to use my console to get away and do something different than FPS or RTS. Now that consoles seem to be abusing both these trends my games library for my xbox 360 is quite alot smaller than what my PSONE and PS2 games libraries used to be like, heck i even have more games on my dreamcast that I can hand on heart say I love to play.

I probably wont get halo 3 as I don't see anything exciting about it. The only FPS game im thinking about getting in the near future on my 360 is The Darkness, which looks like it could bring something totally different to the genre. I'm afraid that halo wont win me as a fan as the previous 2 games had boring single player and im just plain sick of playing FPS multiplayer now.

Even some of my most memorable moments were on FPS games, like goldeneye and perfect dark on the N64. Its sad to see the market oversaturated with alot of bad games and few good ones. Halo may technically be a good FPS game, but I dont have the desire to think about playing it. I even have crackdown and a beta key which is unused and probably will remain to be.

No worries, I've never been into Halo (only ever played 1st one when it was released on PC) as I too prefer the KB/mouse configuration. Nothing about it struck me as being particularly special.

I'm also more hyped for Aegis Wing than anything Halo related. That's just my style. <3 SHMUPS!

The best thing that ever came out of Halo was Red vs Blue. Other than that I've had some fun with the game on the couch with a few friends, but the single player never hooked me enough to make me want to finish it.

You realize, of course, that 99% of responses to this thread are going to be people who don't like Halo, right?

I'm not here to defend it, different strokes for different folks, and its actually refreshing to see posts saying something just didn't appeal to them instead of "Halo iz teh worst game EVAR!"

But, yeah, Halo 3 is just a sequel. It has all the things a sequel has, good and bad. You should remeber, though, that not only is it a beta, its missing many things that may or may not change your opinion.

I really don't like MP in Gears (though I play every now and again), but others swear by it. Not every game is everyone, and if you didn't like the first two, I see no reason why you'd like this one. But four million others are wanting it, so Bungie's doing something right. :D

Well, Bungie made Marathon for Marathon fans, so I can't see how this is surprising. They know their market and don't want to do anything drastic to it. It seems that, from interviews over the past year, they've identified a lot of things they didn't like in Halo 2 that they plan to fix, so I hate to pull out this phrase, but it's going to be "not revolutionary...wait for it, this is good...but evolutionary." (Man, that phrase is so annoying to say.)

The thing I liked about Halo (One, Halo 2 Fails), was how they set it up. It was the first game I had played that used a shield system. And the weapons where made with a sense of checks and balances in mind. The overall feel was a more down to earth feel compared to alot of PC games, where you are frantically jumping around trying to shoot the guy you just ran into.

Also, this was the first game where I actually liked using vehicles.

This was also the first time others had got to play this type of thing, since a comparable PC experience at the time would have ran you $1k in hardware.

MATCHMAKING MATCHMAKING, MAKE ME A MATCH, FIND ME A GAME, STOP SUCKING ASS.

That's the only real complaint I have at the moment.

And I don't think you have to have anything revolutionary to have a good fps. You just have to be able to kill things. Thats what people like to do. I understand theres depth found in other types of gameplay, but if you looked hard enough you could find just as much in this beta.

They just tweaked a nice formula. And will continue to try and make a better game until september. But seriously. Someone fix the matchmaking.

This game doesn't deserve all the praises it gets; It has a pre-conquered buyer base and people will buy it even if it totally sucks... Sure it's a refined Multiplayer experience but there's been better in the past...

Furthermore, I predict Halo3 won't sell that much new 360s since most Halo fans are Microsoft whores and already bought theirs on Day 1

Halo Multiplayer is console Counter Strike.

It's no more, no less.

Any redeeming qualities the game may have, are in the single player. Which aren't showcased here. I reckon, this is mainly a stress test, and doesn't provide the actual thing that's supposed to appeal to the regular gamers that demand their entertainment be above average.

So, it's only to wait and see. This was supposed to be a CounterStrike demo. Looks to me, like a job well done. People who've liked Halo 2, like Halo 3. Boom. All the masses that played H2 can now buy the Xbox 360 (since we know a very select few of that H2 playing crowd bought one) and Microsoft can go count money.

I never really understood the obsession with it either. I always thought it was just a sub-par replacement for Half-Life. I wasn't even really impressed by the graphics.

I don't know how it developed such a following... Everything about it just seemed like it was phoned in. It kinda reminds me of Paris Hilton or Ana Nicole Smith: It's famous for being famous. I wonder if the Halo series would get such great reviews if it wasn't Halo.

Here's another one agreeing with Linde.. Overall I'm not a huge FPS lover because, well, I suck at them. I just don't have the reaction speed to handle fighting 15 other guys at once. I played the beta for a bit yesterday and since I hardly played either 1 or 2 I noticed no differences except enhanced graphics. I guess that's a pretty good sell, if everyone loves Halo they can now play in HD. But for me, I highly doubt id buy the game for myself. Id either need it as a gift or to win one from a future dtoid contest.. It's funny, it feels like peer pressure with this game. Everyone's doing it man.. Hop on board! Nah..

@ Alaphic

It's very easy to figure out why it gained such a following. It works like any other game, where you get to beat others. It's no wonder these are the games with people tea bagging corpses, because that whole "PVP I AM BETTAR THEN YOU!" mentality is worth gold to people who regress once they start playing.

It's like asking why Counter Strike was so popular and still is today.

Same reason. However Halo, being a console game, has one added bonus. It takes no brains whatsoever to set it up. There is no installation, version checks, hardware or software constraints, graphical, audio, gameplay (at least no more than what you'd expect a moron to handle) options. It's just; a cable goes into the TV, you press a button, you put in the game into the tray, you get a question if you want to spend money to play it online, and you're in the game, teabagging all the way. The difficulty to figure out the gameplay is minimal. For the most part, you point and shoot.

Heh, you didn't really think that the most popular games are populated intensely by morons by coincidence, did you?

As far as I'm concerned, as a casual gamer, I simply enjoy Halo. I don't want anything revolutionary or groundbreaking in this, or any, game. I just want a fun, rewarding experience that has decent replay value. And that is exactly what the Halo trilogy gives me. It's a fun game with a fun mythos, and it doesn't make me feel like a retard because I'm not professional or tricksy enough to master it like an MLGer. It's sheer sci-fi run-and-gun, with entertaining online play. That's it. If Halo 3 is prettier and has more fun toys to play with, not to mention a halfway interesting plot, then I'll eat it up like a fat kid in a vat of cotton candy. And the plot, ultimately, is negotiable.

Anyway, that's my story. It's not for everyone, but I'm not everyone, so I don't care. :)

I'm not a PC gamer(don't have the cash), but I enjoy FPS on occasion. I loved the shit out of Goldeneye back in the day, and up until last summer when I finally played Halo 2, I didn't have a good console FPS to play. I enjoy Halo multiplayer, but best game evar? Hell no, doesn't even enter my mind, evar.

Also, at least most of those I know, when it comes to Halo fanboys, most aren't what I would call gamers. They love Halo, and everything else "just isn't Halo" to them. They don't appreciate good games, and I'm ok with that. When they tell me how awesome Halo is, I smile and say I enjoy it. Why argue with people who don't fully understand what they are arguing about?

Before playing Halo 3, I'd feel obligated to first play Halo 1 and 2. And considering that I haven't done that as of yet, I figure my chances of doing so in the future are pretty low, and thus my chances of playing Halo 3 are even lower. I'm not saying it's a bad game or bad series or anything of the sort, not at all. If I actually tried it I would probably enjoy it, maybe, but there are too many other games coming that I'm genuinely excited about for me to waste time on Halo, toward which I mostly just feel meh.

So I go on and play the halo3 beta and well... I'm bored out of my mind. Maybe its just the fact that deathmatch style gameplay died with quake 2? Or maybe it's because I got into the team vs. team gameplay in R6:Las Vegas and Lost Planet? But from the 20 or so matches that I played on Live with halo3, I did not enjoy it. I'll give it a shot again when it goes retail because by then there will be team matches. But for now, I'm not converted into the so called halo fan.

This seems pretty spot on... Halo is fun, but not really too innovative. Even if you want to say that the original was innovative, 2 and 3 probably aren't really. They just tries to be the best game of it's type out there, and maybe even succeed at it, but is not actually innovating anywhere. I have no problem with this, but it's just not the same as innovating (and succeeding, of course).

While not being a rabid fan of the series i jumped into the beta just to see what bungie were doing (since this seems to be the only ip they make games for these days). Personally i found this much more approachable than the previous games and if this is just the beta im sure there will even more improvements to impress/sway me towards partaking in the final product.

Oh and although i don't buy into the insane hype and acclaim this game gets i will give kudos to Bungie for taking some great ideas, some not not all entirely original, and applying and improving them in their product. I cant imagine not playing halo without bubble-shields, trip mines and detachable turrets now.

Good article Linde, totally got the social aspect you mentioned, i think this is wear the game will ALWAYS come out number 1. I dunno if the GRAW's and GOW of the world are just a little too serious for me...Although some curb-stomping Spartans would be pretty sweet....

And now having played 3, even though it's bets, I can't help but feel disappointed. I few new guns and grenades with a few special items added makes not a great sequel. Sure the single player is likely to be longer and better than 2 (not that it would take much), but I really want more. Now, there is plenty we haven't seen, like the other unit(s) you can use in multiplayer. For me to purchase this game, it has to offer something Rainbow Six: Vegas-ish. It has to be Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Terminator 2 (the movie) wrapped up in a big ol' bow for me to spend 60 bucks let alone over a hundred for that paper weight of a helmet. I am enjoying the Halo 3 beta, but so far I'm left unimpressed. Until I play the final version I refuse to make a judgement, but so far, I'm left wanting. It feels like Halo 2 updated.

after reading all the commments on this post, i've come to the decision that you're all crazy.

as a fps console series, halo blows away ANY other game, period. whoever compares it to Half-Life fails, because Half-Life's native home is a PC, the shitty console ports do not even make a blip on the radar. especially on the Xbox 360, the fast and furious gameplay has been absent since it launched. Tactical games like R6:Vegas and GRAW satisfy whoever wants more deliberate and cautious gameplay.
The Halo 3 beta is exactly that, a BETA. New weapons, vehicles, equipment, and gamemodes are still being added and refined. even though, I'm loving the Beta and it's tweaks to the muliplayer. the shield drain and bubble shield are totally new and innovative. Having shield doors that you can see through but not shoot through create a incredible tension between your intended target. the balance in the newer weapons is pretty good, nothing feel overpowered or "cheap". the graphics might not blow you away, but really, does it matter? i'm sure someone can make Blinx 3 on the 560 with graphics as good or better than GoW, but it'll still be Blinx. the Halo 3 Beta's graphics are great to me, it fits bungie's style and the Halo universe's look. The promise of super customization in the final release's MP modes sut it head and sholders above any console's FPS release this year, or next.

Those saying "Halo 3 is what a sequel should be, more of the same with slight improvements" are forgeting (or never knew) that this philosphy towards sequels has pretty much killed every fighting game series, and the average mascot platformer.

For a third sequel, you have to make a game that isn't just a upgrade. It has to be a new game. Resident Evil 4 is an example.

With Halo 3, I guess that can't be expected. But if they add a single player mode similar to Metroid Prime, I may be sort of interested. But if not, why bother? I can get fundementally the same experience from Halo 2 as I can from Halo 3.

I know many old school Halo players who feel this way. Thay have not upgraded to 360 and don't plan to until something totally playing (other than GoW) comes to the system.

Looks like they are going to have to wait a little longer, unless Bungie has a lot of suprises up it's sleave.

I've been through hours of Star Wars: Battlefront and kicked quite a bit of ass, but if I can't see where enemy fire is coming from, I have a tendency to get punched full of holes before I can even get turned around to see who's doing it. Where iz my d00d? Show me my d00d! I have the same trouble with racing games, I just can't follow the right line if I can't see the car.

I'm with Orcist on this one. I'm having a blast playing with so many Dtoiders at once and I'll usually drop what I'm doing to accept an invite, but will I be spending $60 on September 25th? Maybe on pop rocks and bar tabs, but not on Halo 3.
