Will Gears of War movie be EPIC? Script writer talks about 'enormous' film photo

Stuart Beattie, the script writer working on the Gears of War movie adaptation has some ambitious hopes for his latest project. Beattie is planning to portray the backdrop of the planet Sera entirely in green screen, just like 300, as it's the only way the movie can portray such a sense of scale.

"There's no way to build that world any other way, really. That's a huge world," stated Beattie in an interview. "It's a planet and it's a bubble and it's a building. It's an epic sci-fi war and an enormous film." Ironic that Gears should have a sense of scale, as the game is known for being set in quite restrictive corridors.

Cliffy B will be on hand as executive producer and Beattie is said to be working very closely with Epic Games. Of the developer, Beattie said that Epic has "lived with this game more than I have and they definitely know these characters, this world and all that kind of stuff."

"I think the things that they need to develop their games are the same things that I need to write my script. That's just a treasure trove waiting to be mined as far as I'm concerned."

While Stuart Beattie appears optimistic, we cynical gamers know better when it comes to videogame movies. Are any of us holding out hope for the film, with the mindset that a big dumb action game involving growling monsters really isn't hard to adapt, or can Hollywood stuff even that up?

Can they find actors big enough to play Marcus and the gang? I'm not sure there are enoguh steroids in the world to make a person that huge.

Toneman's right Monoclesterling. The gears guys make Barry Bonds look like Snaileb. This movie will probably be horrible. I hold out no hope for video game movies anymore.

Considering that he just said his movie would be like 300, I have completely lost all hope for this movie.

Maybe they should think about getting these guys to do the costumes.

I’d like to think having guys shoot monstrous creatures wouldn’t be difficult to translate to film. Though all other video game movies have, time and time again, proven me wrong that they can easily get it wrong.

Ouch. Am I at least ugly enough to be a locust?

I think this movie will be better than all the crap sequels we've been getting this summer. If not, do you think they'd make Gears a franchise? Resident evil had to problem being a pile of ass (as far as movies go)

The locust will now not be evil monstrosities, just horribly misguided teenagers who long to love.

Not many people pay attention to the fact that in Gears Of War the humans were actually the bad guys.

I think the armor is what jacks up the characters more than real muscle mass. I don't think it'll be overly hard to get a sense of the bulkiness that the Gears characters have.

Lies, Holiday, lies! Haha.

I agree with Jim, they can always just make bulky armor and cover up the fact NO ONE has the physical mass of the Delta Squad. The problem is, I feel they will try to find actors with said mass and rely on roided out wrestlers or something and not even try to get decent actors, totally undermining all possible credibility this film could muster.

Wrestlers acting? Oh noes! It's the eighties again!

@Snaileb: I'm not saying you're a big black man, I'm just saying you're not a big black man. Also, did that make any sense?

i never really liked gears of war for the story. the unique gameplay such as running for cover and the chainsaw kills plus the online play made the game good. does all this stuff warrent a film about it though? no. so they are jus releasing a film because the name is well known. screw that.

I really hope so, as long as marcus sounds and looks like marcus, i'll be fine.

There better be a slow motion death of Carmine.

I don't know, I think it wouldn't be too bad to cast. Guys like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson easily fit the delta squad build in my opinion. And Baird and Carmine weren't really that huge.

Hopefully they can find some big guys that can act to fill the roles. I'm not optimistic, though...

Do I think this movie will suck? Yes.

But if there as a demon wailing on a guitar in the background, it would make it more epic

Gears of War NEEDED some backstory. Hopefully this movie will deliver. At least Cliffy is producing and Epic will be overseeing. Most game developers have no control over the movies of their games and that's why most of them are crap. Hopefully this time we may finally get a good one (with lots of chainsaw mayhem!!).

I think if you see Gears of War as a big dumb action game, you are missing the point. There was strong drama there - a bunch of gruff guys, trained to believe the hype by the COG war machine, dealing with their fear of sense of dread with bravado. Some were disillusioned by the system when it betrayed them (marcus), some bought into their own hype (cole), some used sarcasm to cover their fear (Baird). Dominics steadfast loyalty to his friend came through in the dialog, and was quite touching.

I thought the game had more drama than most movies ive seen.

They could do a great Band of Brothers kind of thing with this, and with Cliffy B heavily involved, i reckon they have a good chance.
