According to the New York Post, the battlefield might soon lose that eerie quietness as it becomes abundantly clear that Apple is poised to try and take a bite out of Nintendo's handheld game business -- via the iPhone. According to a few sources, Apple already has at least one major game developer on hand to aid in their desire to put the motion-based accelerometer in the iPhone to good use. While not perfected as of yet, gaming on the iPhone has already shown quite a bit of potential.
Nintendo on the other hand, has recently applied to patent tilt-sensitivity on the DS, making it one step closer to being a miniaturized Wii -- and we all know how well both of these have been welcomed by the public. Will apple be able to capitalize enough on the momentum of the iPhone to have a snowball's chance in Hades of taking a real fight to Nintendo? I seriously have my doubts on this one. Besides price being the primary roadblock, most people I know aren't too thrilled about playing games on their phones.
Maybe Apple can change this, but I believe the lack of a dedicated set of buttons and controls for gaming is still a big turn off to most people. That, and Nintendo has already proven itself as a slayer of giants in the console and handheld market. You just can't beat a great design with plenty of software backing it up and a price point the average family can afford. Good luck Apple. The handheld graveyard is littered with those that went up against Nintendo before.

Bingo!
I play cell phone games sporadically, and ipod games are of their bretheren, IMO. I don't see them cannibalizing Nintendo's marketshare.
No one's ever mistaken Apple's products as a gaming platform in the past, ya know.
This post was made from a game-less iMac.
Not sure either, but my intuition tells me that it begins with a
"B."
But more importantly: A phone vs. the DS? Puhleeze.
This reminds me of the Ngay... god what a terrible idea.
As a person, if I had to pick one side, being a Sony-ish fan, I know the PSP's place... and it's still below the DS. Granted, I think the PSP is awsome and if Sony ever thinks "duh, let's put a second thumbpad like the fans want! yupyupyup..." then they would be even greater. But of course, with how much of a kungfu grip DS has on the throne of handhelds, PSP still has a long way to go before getting that kind of notice.
So for Apple to try to approach using the iphone? I give Apple props too (though I hate the ipod), but I don't think they got any chance to do anything to Nintendo anytime soon. Then again, Apple has suprised me in the past.
Oh, and Gameboi, great little read on the handheld graveyard top 10 list. I'm happy to see my little NeoGeo Pocket Color being #1 on a list, even if it's a nearly 4-year-old list.
Giving my fighting games RPG-like storylines like I've never seen to date!
As for all these apple apps, I couldn't care less. It's possible cell phone gaming has never been popular simply because the games are all garbage. Maybe instead of asking themselves, "can we do this?", apple should ask "can we do this right".
Every company and their mothers can build a gaming handheld that can play handheld games, as demonstrated in the handheld graveyard link in the article. All I can say is they better have some good third party support.
Ipod? What of money. There are better Mp3 players.
Iphone? Wow, tactile touch screen controls. Who gives a shit? All of this shit is Japan's old technology.
And now Apple wants to compete against Nintendo on the handheld market with cell phone games? Ha, sure ok. How many versions of Super Collapse and/or Hexic would I have to buy to get their numbers at least somewhere remotely close to the DS's?
I have zero hope (also, zero desire to see) that the iPhone will even be recognized as a gaming platform.
In all seriousness tho, this is a terrible idea. They need to learn from the N-Gage and make a gaming console, and not water it down with additional features (like the Pippin). The reason Nintendo was successful with the Gameboys and the DS is because theyt were gaming machines, not Frankenstein's monsters of portable tech. While I may play a few games on my celly, I still go back to the DS every time, because that's what the damn thing was bought for.
Apple spent several years at the bottom of a hole because of stupid decisions, and I certainly hope that they won't drive themselves back down because of more of these stupid decisions.
The iPhone will not be the next big thing in phone and/or mobile gaming.
Mac fan speaking.

Gamers have this sad tendency to reduce complexity down to these simplistic terms, which, I suppose, is why gamers tend to be consumers of these things and not the business owners, who understand it's never that simple.
And it can only play Blizzard games.
ZING!
I got no problems with the PSP... I'm just waiting for it to go down in price before I pick it up. It's a decent hand-held offering and far better than I thought it could be. I give Sony props for even contending.
But NO ONE will take the hand-held throne from Ninty!
Nintendo says when hand-held begins!
