WildTangent: consoles dead by 2020, PC to reign supreme photo

According to the Seattle Post Intelligence, Wild Tangent’s chief executive Alex St. John thinks that consoles will be “extinct” by 2020. His substantiations for the claims are almost as silly as his prediction of the end of console gaming. The following was said at the CasualConnect conference in Seattle with a picture of Moses behind him on the screen.

We are looking at the last generation of consoles right now. I am going to predict to you that the PS3, the Wii and the Xbox are the last generation of consoles that you either see or that anybody regards as successful in the market.
The cited reasons for his beliefs are that stockholders won’t want the console manufacturers spending money to create new consoles, and that the TV in the living room will disappear and be replaced by some crazy Minority Report contraption with multiple screens and interactivity. Also, he claims that laptops in schools will bring a shift to the PC market as kids will begin playing more Sims expansions and Diablo knock-offs.

In fact, St. John’s entire speech led to the fact that PC gaming is beginning to take a turn for the better and will eventually dominate the industry like it used to. His focus was that digital distribution, in-game advertising, and demos are causing this massive revolution of which we are participants. Apparently, the success of the Wii means nothing to Mr. St. John in regards to his argument, as he plainly stated that Nintendo’s desire to create peripherals spells the same kind of doom that arcades went through to try to earn back the loyalty of console enthusiasts. At least, so says the spyware developer at WildTangent.

@Jiffylube Ya why don't we invent the Matrix while we're at it.
@Velt and anyone else who thinks building computers will sustain the industry. Your crazy...if you think the average person can put together than own computer and install all the necessary software. I have a high end PC but I have no illusions about what is possible. The mere fact that the best argument against the console vs the pc is you can build a pc for a little over a good PS3, just shows how little you understand the situation. Do you really think grandyQ and JonnyQ public are going to build their own computers? Why do you think companies like Dell make massive killings on just WARRANTIES?

"Again console will remain the best entertainment for price, because consoles are ACTIVELY geared and marketed toward a wider audience. I still stick with the 5k overhead price if you think your going to try to use a $800 dollar computer to 2020 your not floating in the right ocean. The 5k comp won't even make it to 2020.'

Since when are we talking about buying a system that lasts until 2020? That's ridiculous. Is this some joke about how consoles don't need upgraded? Well, if my NES played PS3 games, I might agree with you.

:"Like I said you'd have to expect the average for sale computer to meet all 2020 specs at a reasonable price. AKA not build it yourself prices. Or else you are imagining that the general population IQ has jumped by 50 points.

Also current generation prices doesn't denote future trends, as time goes on prices tend to go up due to inflation and other trends. "

Again, what the heck are the 2020 specs about? I admit freely that we have a cost issue. However, inflation and prices going up hits different platforms different. For example, a decent computer 10 years ago wouldv'e been 1000-1500 dollars. A decent computer now is 400-600 dollars. A console 10 years ago was 300-400 dollars. A consle now is 400-500 dollars, minus the Wii. I don't think its ridiculous to think its possible that PC's will be priced appropriately at some point.

"How many 5 year old $500 PCs will play even a small subsect of the games on the market today?

I spend $500 on a console ONCE and I never have to worry about upgrading it in order to get a new game on it."

Yeah, except when the next generation of consoles comes out. If you replace your computer once every 4 years and you spend around 600-700 on it every time you replace it, you'll be fine with 99% of PC games. Especially if you upgrade other parts from time to time. The first time I had an issue with my now 5 year old computer was with Oblivion. What a surprise. I could still play most games, but I started saving to replace it. I did in November.

There are bonuses of the PC over consoles in this department too. PC's are, for the most part, far more backwards compatible than most consoles. Sure, some PS3's play PS2 games, 360's play a good chunk of Xbox games, and the Wii is basically an upgraded Gamecube, but my PC runs games from BACK IN THE DAY with no issues. Not to mention emulation....

Also, if you upgrade your PC with a little bit of money every 4 years, your computer use will be smoother and faster, you'll always have graphics as good as or better than consoles (when the PS3 first came out, maybe it had an edge, in the next couple of years though, PC games will begin to embarrass console games again.. its the cycle), and you'll still have ready access to your old entertainment.

"A high-end PC you build yourself for $1500 or so at current prices to tackle Crysis."

I built mine almost a year ago for 700-800, and it handles Crysis with no issues. My brother's computer from a couple of years ago that cost only 500 or so with a 100 dollar video card runs Crysis with moderate settings.

I want to clarify that my now 5 year old computer (then 4 year old computer) still ran Oblivion. It just did it with ultra low settings. Still, it was the only game I ever wanted to run on that PC that the PC couldn't handle.

Ridiculous prediction is ridiculous.

Just like all ridiculous predictions.

Nothing to see here really.

At any rate, why does it always always seem to have to be an either/or, us vs them, good vs evil thing around here (not to mention pretty much everywhere else on the Internet as well)? When it's not 360 vs PS3 vs Wii, it's PC vs console. It's beyond fucking tiresome.

i'm a pc, wii360, ds(r4), 2 psp (one custom one reg firmware) guy.

I gotta say alot of good points have been brought up in this article despite some dumb ass fanboyism.

First, the pc is and will be the dominate platform for gaming. But that depends on what your definition of gaming is. The PC has the greatest acess to freeware, emulation, webbased games, not to mention the PC only good type of genres.

What are PC good type genre games. Well in my mind, Online FPS (alia TF2, Battlefield 2, Counter strike, et al) Real time strategy and turn based strategy games (new civ game is so dumbed down) flight sims and other sims (lets see how much better spore on pc is than any other platform) and the giant gorilla which I personally despise MMO's. PC's also have the greatest install base of them all and have many more other uses (emulators, roms, ripping muisc/dvd's, not to mention full internet functionality.

On the other hand consoles have there place too, and are becoming more PC like every generation and will continue to do so. Future gen consoles might integrate dvr and maybe even email. However, what business is going to use a console for its email.

That said consoles will have there place for a long time to come like the PC, consoles has strength's over the PC.

Sports games are much better on consoles, plug and play, not to mention portable consoles (but emulators and roms are the portable and pc bastard child to developers and gamers godsend)

I'm getting tired of typing so my conclusion is both will have a place for years to come and I doubt either will be able to make the other obsolete. As for me I will ride both trains as long as I can.

What I find silliest about this whole ordeal is his word choice. His idea that this will be the last generation of consoles that anyone will regard as successful in the marketplace is laughable. He makes it seem like the console end of the industry is in a downturn, whereas numbers prove the exact opposite to be true.
I agree with many that the health of PC gaming seems to be returning afresh. I'm happy about that. But it seems to me worth noting that at the same time we can cite an upturn in the PC world, we can also note an upturn of current-gen console games being ported to PC. This is a phenomenon unheard of in the olden days. Consoles were lucky to get massacred versions of Diablo or Civ, now the PCs are graced with ports of Mass Effect, Devil May Cry, Gears of War, and Lost Planet. I can even remember as far back the the PC port of Onimusha 3. Tables have turned, and the industry shows a definitive prefference toward consoles.
The success of the Wii has proved without question that ease of accessibility is a key to winning in this new-faced industry. PC fans will even have to begudgingly admit that this is one realm in which the PC has always failed.

consoles will never die. at least not for the next 50 years.

it will keep cycling

consoles = awesome super new jaw dropping next-gen grafx
2 years later
PC = awesome super new jaw dropping next-gen grafx
3 years later new console generation

consoles will always also be cheaper & popping in a game & playing it will always appeal to people who dont want to install games or configure a computer.

PCs will always be ahead of the tech curve though because they constantly progress. but consoles will always remain the best bang/buck for games.

Hey, when the company that created the masterpiece Shootin' With The Poops says consoles are gonna die, we'd better damn well listen.

How can PC reign supreme when it's dying out and its golden age is of the past? Silly PCfags are in denial.
