Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Yes kids, you heard that right. This morning, if you're not European of course, you should have noticed that your Wii is throbbing with a calming blue glow. If you investigate the source, you may be pleased to know that WiiWare has gone live with two Metroid Prime 3 preview videos for you to gawk and drool at over your cornflakes. As well as a normal trailer, you will also be able to watch a gameplay video of the upcoming FPS. Apparently, there will also be a channel where you can "scratch" to reveal a picture. Fun ... I guess.

When I checked my own Wii, I noticed no blue glow and as such, have deduced that European customers are, once again, left out in the cold. Please let me know if any of my fellow Eurotrash can actually access WiiWare yet or if indeed we've gotten the shaft from Nintendo once more. Either way, you can check out a video of WiiWare running up above, which I got right here. Pew! Pew! Pew!

Ok just watched both the available videos and other than the low quality they are pretty amazing. The bridge fight looks awesome and just the mere few seconds of voice acting in a Nintendo game excited me. Plus a female narrator? Could that be Samus herself like in Fusion? Probably not but you can dream.

Europe is probably getting shafted because the whole theme for the thing is "The Month of Metroid!", with trailers/gameplay videos along with the Virtual Console releases of Metroid NES and Super Metroid, all leading up to Metroid Prime 3's release

However, since Europe isn't even getting Metroid Prime 3 this month...it wouldn't make sense for Europe to be having a "Month of Metroid" without the big finish; the release of the game =\

But hey, you guys got Mario Strikers earlier than us =D

Jim, how about Metroid and Super Metroid on Virtual Console? Gotta say I'm more excited about playing one of the best Metroidvanias.

Ah yes, of course. Good thing I didn't hook up the Wii again just to check out what the Metroid news was.
It looks like we may still get it in Europe at 26 October. That is 3 months earlier than I expected!

So exciting... Can't you just browse to Gamevideos.com and see them?

And the "scratch to reveal" for a screenshot sounds lame.

i wouldn't have noticed as mine is still glowing blue from the firmware update. although it does suck because i want it to just glow blue, which means no more everyone votes channel, but on the bright side, it glows blue now. [:

also sadly, i'm in a mood to play elebits, so if i actually get around to it [i laugh at that thought myself] it won't glow blue any more ]:

Most of us find this update pretty pointless, but remember those of us who scrounge around gaming blogs are in the minority. There are a lot of Wii gamers that either don't know about or don't know much about Metroid Prime 3, so this is pretty cool. I'm getting really excited about owning a Wii for once.

Fact of the matter is, if Nintendo was "serious" about online gaming, Europe would have this. Europe would also have Nintendo games coming out at the same time as the rest of the world. Because you can't have a good online strategy with different countries lagging behind.

Hence, Nintendo is not serious about going online. Nintendo doesn't have the first clue.

When I first saw the message from nintendo this morning for some reason I thought it would be a demo. I realize now how unlikely that was, but i'm still a little dissapointed.

I gave them money for a Wii, why should I be treated differently from US and Japanese gamers? In fact because the £ (pound) is so strong UK gamers nmost likely gave Nintendo more money per console than US and Japan, so whats with the hate? Must be cool to be a Europe hater amongst the console maufacturers.

I thought that maybe this would be Nintendo's first downloadable demo. Nope.

That big huge block of text that gets glazed over says that Metroid is coming on 8/13 and that Super Metroid is coming on 8/20. Were we just all suddenly struck blind or something? This is news. REALNEWS! Important cereal digg-worthy news.

DVD, good point. 2 amazing titles about to hit VC. Super Metroid worth the Wii points if you're without a SNES and not wanting to dumb it down on an emulator.

Sterling, I agree that Nintendo's "online" is utter crap at this point and not looking good for the future. A demo was what I was hoping for. That would've at least left a significant impression for the hardcore (e.g. us Dtoiders). That would've backed Reggie's online claims at the E3 press conference a little more. Nintendo fails once again.

Good thing is that it comes out in less than 3 weeks. Can't. Wait. Any. Longer.

It's a goddamn marketing campaign. You can view the videos on YouTube for crying out loud, or just wait until Euro release when *big-fuckin'-gasp* they repeat this same schtick for you guys. I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait a few months to experience the scratch-to-reveal activity for yourself.

In other news, Super Metroid.

Yeah i have to totally agree with Jim here. Nintendo screw the Europeans over on a regular basis. Trauma Centre finally came out today, Super Paper Mario not out yet WHY... Now this Metroid preview.

In a side related question I tried to change the country of setting on my Wii to USA however it will only do European Countries and the odd Random like Zimbabwe

It's starting to become a habit for me to denounce Nintendo in these comment sections, but today I'll keep it short and simple.

Reggie is a liar. I don't know why so many Ninty fanboys whack off to him every time he opens his mouth. He's a liar.

Nintedo make great games, but they fail big time with Europe.

And you know what? It's all just a viscious cycle. Europe gets pissed with Nintendo, and stops buying their delaying, overpriced games, and Nintendo gets annoyed with Europe and decides to focus less on that region as it doesn't cooperate well.

It's nice that the preview is more than just a trailer (though admittedly not much more) but sort of like a marketing website they created for the game. It's true that this could have been done just as easily with a traditional website, but at least Nintendo is showing Wii-owners some love (excluding Europe).

I just hope this is only the beginning of more trailers and possibly demos to come for other games in the future, and not just something that happens when Nintendo wants to market their own franchises a little bit more.

Unfortunately Jim is right, Nintendo don't get online gaming at all, it doesn't help that Microsoft have created a near faultless online experienece for comparison.

But people have to remember that Microsoft have had years of online experience through the PC, it is second nature for them. In contrast, it is all new for Sony and Nintendo, the thing with Nintendo is that those fuckers learn fast, it won't be too long before they work it out, just don't expect it it be Xbox live with a Nintendo logo on it, it will something unique.

I'm afraid the current model makes no sense, the Wii is an online machine restricted by region, so why bother being online?
trabus's Avatar

I don't get why they don't have a previews channel that only has preview videos, so they can feature new games and whatnot.

To have it in the WiiWare section is pretty misleading. I know it says preview on the download, but it still got my hopes up that Nintendo might have finally realized how useful playable demos are as selling tools.

lol, so many Europeans butthurt because they don't get a channel with two gameplay videos... that specifically said it exists because of MP3's launch this month in NA. It's a commercial, and one geared directly towards the market getting the game. Everyone else will get this in a few months.

Also, weren't some people complaining just yesterday that Nintendo wasn't doing anything to promote Metroid's release? At least it's slightly more interesting (and much less expensive) than a television ad campaign. And Super Metroid on VC? Win.
Cyberxion's Avatar
Cyberxion at 08/10/2007 20:43
Mxyzptlk, valid points and all, but I think they're more concerned with the constant delay between releases made in other regions and theirs, and this was just sort of the catalyst that brought the discussion to a head.

May be silly, but I suppose that they have a valid point just the same. I mean, how focused on online can Nintendo really be, when they stagger releases so much that gamers' options are limited as far as who they play, and Europe is left out for months at a time? Or...wait.

Hmn, maybe it's not so indicative of Nintendo's failure in focusing on online after all, but it still sucks for them something fierce, and I can understand how it'd be a sore point. My sympathy goes out to them.

Also, Nintendo needs to get their act together. They really need to stop alienating substantial sections of their market. It's just not good business.

Can I just point out the number of languages spoken in Europe compared the number spoken in America.

When something is delayed in Europe it's usually due to translation which is why Trauma Centre and Pokemon took so long to get a release date.

The reason it doesn't happen on other consoles is because fewer and fewer games are text heavy.

Copyright and licensing can hold up content updates too which is why the Xbox Live TV on demand service still isn't available in Europe.

Also the EU have strict rules regarding releases of anything in Europe which also holds things up.

Just be patient and wait for it.
Jim Sterling's Avatar
Jim Sterling at 08/12/2007 15:19
Bullshit, quite frankly. Those games that aren't text heavy often rely on vocals and/or subtitles. They can manage it. Nintendo can't/won't.
