No different than moderating a forum, really. No one really wants thier forum to be a place where people feel threatened, offended or unwelcome.
I don't go on Live mostly because of what I know I'll be hearing (aside from the mouth-breathing). I avoid CoD and BF for that reason.
It just shouldn't be part of my experience to have to filter and block each jackass I meet.
Gamers could just stand to look st thier vocabulary every now and again.
You can leave "public" comments in games. These will be screened and moderated, not unlike a message board, by both human beings as well as a computer system.
Now, the questions this raises are:
1) Can you leave "private" messages to your friends, and will these be screened?
2) Is there a different "chat" type system for messages, and will THAT be screened.
I would assume the logical answers are "yes" to private posts, "yes" to chat rooms and "no" to screening on both.
This is the stupidest shit, yet. This is exactly why the Japanese can't do anything internet/online-related properly.
Look at the shitty Demon Souls "online" shit. You chose from pre-selected messages.
Look at Street Fighter 4's "comment" system; more pre-selected messages.
This was my very first fear as soon as I saw this feature; "Is this going to be limited in any way for the purpose of maintaining some kind of artificially-sanitized protective bubble to protect the children?"
Fucking Japan, get your head out of your ass.
Wow, jumping to conclusions, much?
Miiverse is a message board and public comments system. Can you get censored in a message board? Yes.
Stop overreacting.
Let users flag stuff that's inappropriate, set up an automatic filter system and stop letting children pretend the worlds always a super friendly perfect amazing place.
I'm all for avoiding stuff and keeping things out of kids lives that just aren't meant for them, but, i at feel there's a line where it's just ridiculous.
and this is past said line in my book.
"...i at feel there's a line where it's just ridiculous."
Here's the thing, though: where that line is drawn is different for everyone. The only way to make the most people happy about it is to put it REALLY close to full censorship.
@evilmonkeybro: your* umad? this is me giving a fuck. ;D If the internet is too much for you, don't use it. Simple. Censorship of any kind is #WORSEthanAIDS.
But you can't fight it. You just can't. You can't fight the dicks. The dicks shall overwhelm all. The dicks shall consume everything! THE DICKS CANNOT BE STOPPED!
Plus, if they also monitor private messages, this will go from "futile" to "suicidal".
"This. Anything else is just overreacting."
Really? Protecting people from spoilers by letting them report spoilers after being spoiled?
Sounds awesome.
They just need admins. And if accounts are actually worth anything, people won't want to be banned.
...unless accounts are free and you can make as many as you like for the purpose of trolling.
Not that anyone would ever do that...
What most people probably don't realize is Nintendo, EA, Activision and companies are all employing several people (sometimes more than several) to artificially promote their image and products on third-party sites such as Destructoid while posing as everyday commentors.
If anything, that kind of practice, where you're actually going out of your way to deceive people, is reprehensible.
Compared to that, Nintendo's management of their own internal site and comment system is both tame and to be expected.
...You mean I could have actually made money off what I've been doing this past year?
.... wow, that's depressing in all sorts of ways...o_o
Here you go.
Here's another article on the subject, if the first wasn't enough.
And here's a third article with even more background information (note the reference to the well-known "All I want for Christmas is a PSP" astroturfing campaign by Sony).
All large companies practice astroturfing in one form or another. Some are more brazen about it than others. If you ask me, this is the kind of thing that people should be more upset about. Unfortunately, it's just becoming business as usual.
It's relatively straightforward to create a trusted user system where users known to post useful comments are 'cleared' once you run their comment through a basic filter for bad language, inappropriate links, etc...
This can all be highly-automated, and then you only need to review the new users' comments in addition to any comments flagged for abuse. Most sites already have some form of this.
OMG! Why don't people use common sense. This is not for having conversations. Do you honestly think Nintendo is going have moderators, monitoring all of your conversations? This isn't communist Russia here, they're just talking about posting comments about games, that will show up on your home screen, and in the games like NSMB:U. Its not your personal messages to friends.
Do they do that on the 3DS? No, you can send SwapNotes freely to your friends, so why would you think they'd go all psycho on people, and monitor every conversation that they have on the Wii U? So they're going to tout having instant messaging, and video chat only to make you wait 30 minutes before posting it. Come on, don't be so ridiculous. That's never going to happen. Its just a filter in place, the same filter that's on XBL.
Microsoft has moderators on XBL checking people GamerTag names, bio's, and if there's A-holes sending inappropriate messages, so why wouldn't Nintendo have a similar system? Why would people not want them to have filters? Do you honestly want the douche-bags that are on XBL, to be the same type of people that's on the Miiverse? You can't just let people run freely, because they'll do whatever the hell they want.
If there are millions of people involved, they'll want to pretend a human is reading every post, but no way is that going to happen in reality.
They'll probably have a thorough automated screening program with a timed delay.
I mean as soon as the drawing thing and messages, I began the countdown of how many penises and swastikas that people would put up.
