Wii turns heads, revives dormant gamers

Wii turns heads, revives dormant gamers photo
     Nintendo

November has been a pox upon my free time, my wallet and my self-esteem; as such, I didn't expect my girlfriend to be too hyped on this recent splurge of games. She's got gaming in her blood, though, having grown up with two fiercely geeky older brothers. Despite her terribly sexy nigh-encyclopedic knowledge of gaming, she doesn't really game all that much. She was always afraid to be geeky growing up.

Since we got a place together I've been making small moves to get her back into console gaming. I hadn't experienced much success until last night, when she finally sat down with Wii Sports. Surprise: she's crazy good at bowling. We both suck at real bowling, mind -- hell, I even suck at Wii Sports bowling, my real life suckery having carried over seamlessly to my new Wii-based digital lifestyle. But my girlfriend is amazing. She went on to dominate golf and tennis and is beginning to really enjoy the console. With reports from early adopters pouring in from all over, it seems that the Wii is every bit as viral in its appeal as Nintendo promised.

Nintendo, please consider this my salute to your product. I've spent a little over a day and a half with the Wii and I've never seen anything turn heads quite like it. For Thanksgiving I'm heading home to Spokane, WA -- birthplace of Penny Arcade, the 1974 World's Fair Expo, and meth busts -- where I plan to expose as much of my family as I can to this wonderful little device. With a family as awkward and malformed as mine, we'll need all the distraction we can get.

So, Dtoid readership: how's your Wii experience been so far? Who are you planning to wow this week of grubbing with your shiny new consoles? Throw us some comments.

Oh also, I recommend that anyone interested in buying VC games skip the Wii Points Card and just use a credit card. I think you pay $5 extra for the points card. I guess they only have the cards for people who don't have a credit card, or those too afraid to use it online.

I'm going to my research advisor's house for Thanksgiving, and she's like, 53, and I'm gonna bring over my Wii. We'll see if she enjoys it.

All I got on Wii launch day was a high-end MacBook Pro 15" laptop :( Sadly, I actually want a Wii more than this crazy powerhouse of a laptop. This thing is still *almost* as awesome as a Wii, but I'll have to wait and compare later.

Your story sounds identical to mine, including being great and bowling. My wife kicked my ass last night. She called me at work over lunch and asked if we call play some more tonight after dinner. Normally she hates video games. This is unbelievable. For me, that was worth the $250 right there.

I got one at Toy's R Us (Times Square) on Saturday night. I made a mii that looks very funny, and scarily like me. I also made a mii for my girlfriend. When I showed it to her, she immediately decided started trying to make hers cuter. Then once she liked it I started a bowling game for us. It took her a few minutes to figure it out but then she got really into it and eventually beat me.

Next I put in Raving Rabbids and she totally got into that and was laughing and wanting to try the minigames over and over until she beat them.

Keep in mind that this is a woman who has always looked down on video games, and the last time she tried to play was MaroiKart 64, and all she could do was drive into the wall.

The addition of the mii feature is what drew her in, and the ease of the controller was what kept her playing. Nintendo I am very impressed.

I was anticipating this more than anything since the N64, and I'm still impressed. I got it at midnight on Saturday, had some friends over Sunday, and couldn't get rid of them until the wee hours. The controller is responsive but still keeps my hands from turning into claws after 7 hour Zelda sessions. People that normally don't 'do' videogames are getting into making the Miis and playing Wii Sports - I'm thinking of taking this with me to my folks' big Thanksgiving get-together on Thursday. For some reason I feel like I draw power from how many people have their likenesses on my little white magic-box.

A few of us already had a Wii party, along with a friend who I though would NEVER touch a game controller. She and her boyfriend aced everyone in Wii Tennis.

I just can't believe it's so accepted, but I'm very very happy.

My wife is in the same boat as a lot of other people's apparently. She hasn't liked a video game since the 1st Crash Bandicoot on PS1. Now, she spends her time alternating between making Miis and owning in Wii Sports Bowling. She even tried her hand at Red Steel and was cracking headshots within 20 minutes.

I like the Wii and everyone who I've invited over to play it likes it as well.

PS. Hooray for the interface!
