Though Microsoft and Sony both had a strong post-Christmas showing of their respective consoles, Nintendo came out on top in January, Bloomberg
is reporting. From the article:
Nintendo Co.'s Wii outsold Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 during January as consumers bought 436,000 of the video-game consoles. Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 was the second-most purchased machine with sales of 294,000, followed by PlayStation 3 with 244,000, Credit Suisse analyst Heath Terry said today in a report, citing NPD Group Inc. data. Wii is outselling PlayStation 3 by almost 2-to-1, the report said.
Though many would have us believe that absolutely everything absolutely sucks about Nintendo's little white box, you can't argue with those numbers. Those who were desperate to see a Wii 'neath the tree this past holiday are buying them up as quickly as they become available; meanwhile, SCEA President Jack "Lollerskates" Tretton is having his outrageous claims shoved down his throat. Like it or not, the Wii's selling. A lot.
The rush will undoubtedly quiet itself down in the coming months, but Nintendo's got a good bit of momentum going for the Wii. Provided that first- and third-party support supplies a handful of quality games throughout 2007, Nintendo might actually stand a chance at the unthinkable: extending its market share beyond its insane fanbase. A lad can dream, right?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I have the site bookmarked and I check it every so often and just smile every time I see it.
BTW, was that bounty thing true? Can anyone provide a link to the article or something?
Theres are least 4 Wii games worth buying atm, and the VC isn't too bad if you never owned any of the old stuff.
So I guess my point is to wonder if this is a question of apples and oranges. Another way to think about it is that there are more than half the number of people willing to put down $5-600 on a console as there are people willing to put down $250 on a console. I don't think that's a surprising ratio.
*ducks and covers*
I don't deny that the price plays a role in its sales, but in the end I think the positive media coverage and the effects of grassroots viral marketting have really sparked the great interest in the console.
You're doing well, I see. That's good! Now, for the important stuff.
Don't fuck it up!
You've already got a great install base, now give us something, anything! You can connect the damn thing to this 'interweb' thing, so make use of it w/ some of your games. Get dev kits out double-quick, and put some pressure on the 3rd parties to crank out some games.
With love;
Karl
Meanwhile, my PS2 and DS games are stockpiling up fast as hell. It just takes some time.
That bounty thing is completely rawful. I'm having the same experience here, and I have been to *a lot* of gaming stores in Toronto, including relatives and friends who work in them. Very few don't have any PS3s. My friends looking for a Wii always get a "would you like a ps3?" when they're told there aren't any.
I just don't wanna move around too much, ya know? I've been sitting still playing Crackdown for the past 6 hours, and I feel very fulfilled.
I heart Aaron Linde.
I hear that. I went in to drool over crackdown on Monday, and ended up buying 3 more DS games. And I still have 1-2 that I haven't finished yet. So many games, so little time.
But last week, I decided to spend my hard earned pesos on a Xbox360, and seriously, it was the best choice ever to have waited a year after its release. Right now, 360 have a wide selection of games, including some extremely addictive ones like Gears of War, Dead Rising and Viva Pinata. Those games got something Wii doesn't have much for now: replay value. As long as Wii games are only single players, we'll beat them and get tired of them. I mean, I am a huge Zelda fan, but there's no point for me to keep playing Twilight Princess now that I have cleared it.
But multiplayer can keep a game alive for a while, look at Halo 2! Not only that, but now that I'm playing Gears of War online, I already restarted the single player campaign on harder difficulty just to practice my skills for online matches. And I know I won't quit playing this game for a while.
So my point is, maybe the Wii is outselling every other consoles right now, but if the big games, especialy those with multiplayer, don't come out quick in the next months, there's gonna be shitload of pre-owned Wiis available next christmas at Ebgames!
Sometimes you just want to have fun instead of sitting through another Oblivion-like experience. The Nintendo Wii has gone for the casual gamer's market, and it has succeeded extremely well. I even got to play mine with my whole family, and they don't even play video games.
The Nintendo Wii really is amazing, despite the fact that it could have been so much more to gamers.
What I'd like the Wii to have in the future:
*at least 720p HD
*User ID's instead of Friend Codes
*Achievement points
*DVD playback
*A better internet browser (that huge bottom bar bugs me)
*Add gamer-centric features to Everybody Votes and the News channel. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have a gamer's poll, or a gaming news channel.
The Xbox 360 is a great gamer's system. I'm glad I bought one right when it came out. I knew it would do better than the original Xbox, and I'm hoping it outlives the Playstation 3, and becomes the new Playstation 2 in terms of common gamer popularity and acceptance.
Wow, sorry if I offended you. I was using "jokers" as a synonym for "people" there, not as some disparaging remark about Wii owners.
I'm also fully aware that there are, in fact, 4 million Wii owners, but I fail to see how this proves that the Wii is a worthwhile purchase. JoeyBuckets has a good example here. In the 70's millions of kids bought Pet Rocks (just a rock in a box), but the sales numbers of Pet Rocks are never going to convince me to buy a one. When it comes down to it, I just don't see what all the fuss is about. I'm sure you're very fulfilled by your Wii, and I'm happy for you, but it's just not appealing to me right now. I guess the joke is still on me... What does that mean? You're one of only a couple of people on this post who is happy with your Wii purchase at the moment. Again, I'm sure there were kids who were happy with their Pet Rocks; I'm happy for you all.
THE TRAVELER HAS COME.
Of course, my kids could care less. They love Wii Sports and WarioWare. They're content with what's available and I've got the 360 to keep me plenty occupied until some of Nintendo's big first-party titles start rolling out.
