Wii successor to be 'thoroughly vetted' before decided upon photo

It should come as no surprise to anybody that Nintendo, along with the other platform holders, is already thinking of the next generation. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed that a Wii successor is in production as we speak. Iwata added, however, that current plans aren't necessarily indicative of what the future may hold for Nintendo's hardware.

"The hardware team started work on the next thing as soon as they were done with their previous project, but what they think up doesn't necessarily become a product," explained the Nintendo boss. “We only turn something into a product after it's been thoroughly vetted inside the company. We're not at a point where we can give specifics, but of course we're working on it."

Where will Nintendo takes its hardware designs to next? The next step would be mind-controlled videogames, and now that I've decided this is definitely what Nintendo is working on, I will disappointed -- bitterly -- by anything less.

The next console won't be a huge leap just a more redefined wii with graphics a little bit better than the ps3(maybe), then again sometimes to more redefined consoles can be better like the snes. But there is a pattern nes+upgraded=snes. n64+upgraded=gamecube, wii+upgraded=???. That said there still can be some pretty big jumps in technology but I don't expect mind control or virtual reality rooms till generation 9 consoles.

The new system will focus on cutting edge graphics power, and will be release with a bunch of new IPs! Also, it will not feature any sort of motion controls and will be targeted to adults ages 16-35. HAHAHAHAHAHA....

All the lame jokes aside, can Nintendo really afford to deviate all that much from what they did this generation? The Wii is so successful that I believe that the safest bet will be to expect an incremental improvement on it, and little else.

@linuxguy: I believe you mean 'Puu'.

Seriously, I was just thinking of buying a cheap 360. I can't afford consoles at the beginning of their life cycles, and, by the time I can, they only have two years left on the clock anyway. This is ridiculous.

Picture Caption: The ears of the Wii 2 will be throughly examined by Data from Star Trek. Expect more pet sims.

I would personally like to see something thats like iMax 3D for games. And of course some better graphics and a bit more focus on hardcore. Maybe if the Wii is for beginners the next console could be sort of a "gateway" into hardcore games. Or something that bridges the gap between "hardcore" and "casual" with a variety of different games for different demographics.

Hopefully, Nintendo's next console will have rechargeable batteries, wireless controllers, ethernet ports, a real hard drive - 500 GB+, voice chat, et cetera out of the box.

All I know, is that I won't be getting Nintendo's Console first.

Made that mistake with the Wii, not doing it again.

A mere graphic processing update won't sell new Nintendo consoles. For that, they'll have to produce a console capable of HDVRMMOFBWCGs: High-Definition Virtual-Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Full-Body-Waggle Casual Games.

So I suppose this means the vet will be neutering Nintendo's next console as well. *rimshot*

Man, I don't even have a Wii yet. I've stopped trying to look for them. It's pointless disappointment, never finding the damn thing.

I want to play Boom Blox so bad. Oh well, guess it's plan B.

Sit it out and wait with a PS3/PC to keep me company.

unfortunately theyre probably gonna have to come up with some new wacky gimmick to try and herd their new demographic to the next system. it better be something u can play games on! :S

linuxguy: I'm going to go with 4 GameCubes taped together. They've surely still got tons left over even after taping so many together to make all of these Wiis. And I seriously doubt they'd use something as expensive as duct tape. These are the same people who charge us $20 for a controller addon that costs about a buck to produce after all.

Realistically I'd expect something with graphical capabilities in the ballpark, but probably slightly below, an xbox 360 with a motion controller similar to the Wii. Probably with an optimized button layout, the MotionPlus built in, a higher precision IR unit, and a whopping 2GB of internal flash RAM.

They should call it Super Wiitendo Entertainment System, but Xii is also acceptable.

Geez, why cant they just get busy and start coming out with a slew of killer games before they think of a next console.

The NES, SNES and even Gamecube had a mad amount of games, many of them very good. This system is starting to bore me, and I am a huge Nintendo fan.

My mid-life crisis is going to make me forgo nostalgia and ditch the Wii for a 360.
