Wii Speak demand is 'limited' photo

Nintendo loves acting confident enough to admit its failures, although in the case of Wii Speak, I don't think Nintendo could pull the wool over our eyes if it wanted to. The ill-advised microphone/speaker combo is a dud, and Nintendo has confirmed as much.

"The Wii Speak microphone is still available at limited retail locations," Nintendo states. "Additional shipments can be made if consumer demand increases."

A number of retailers, including Amazon and GameStop, have stopped online orders for the peripheral while other stores simply have older shipments waiting to sell out with no indication that they'll ask Nintendo for more. Meanwhile, upcoming games are dropping support for the peripheral, with The Conduit 2 becoming the latest to instead support the Headbanger Headset.

Thus the boring, dull, pointless saga of Wii Speak reaches its final chapter. Perhaps one day Nintendo will learn that we don't want to purchase pointless, unsupported crap in order to play maybe two games.

Wasn't there an article a while back stating that Nintendo wasn't allowing other companies to use the WiiSpeak in their games? I vaguely remember hearing something about Activision wanting to use it in Goldeneye...

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Nintendo will be releasing new peripherals that they will use in two games for all eternity.

...well, the audio quality is kind of shit and all of three games support it. It's not hard to see why no one wanted it.

It's because 70% of wii owners think the idea of someone elses voice coming from a speaker is the devils work.

I can't say that I didn't see this coming. I think Nintendo is notorious for making peripherals that people buy only to be disappointed when they come to find that only one game supports them.

I don't see how they figured shouting into a microphone across a room had any shot at survival. They should have just made the wii more friendly to standard usb headsets and they could have still sold their own. Giving consumers more choice could have prodded developers into making use of it.

Nintendo's never going to learn, but I don't think they should. They are the purveyors of innovation within the game industry, why stop them from making new things? Sure half of their crap sucks, but you can't stifle creativity.

I never understood the purpose of this. The DS has a built-in microphone and even voice chat for its online games on that system. Why did voice chat for Wii games have to come as an afterthought? I've always suspected that Nintendo loves the DS much more than it does the Wii, what with the DS having store demos for display units while display Wii units have to show the full game. Even the Gamecube also had kiosk demos. The DS has four separate models (one of which is for a specialized audience) while the Wii only recently got different-colored remotes. Why would Nintendo show more care for its handheld than their current home console?

as someone who owns a wii speak (and an e-reader, and a snes mouse, and the gba player [actually good]), this is the thing about nintendo that really burns me. i don't care that people say the graphics ruin wii games (i think there are some very high tech things about wii, like solid state memory, etc.), but when something so simple as online voicechat between friends proves to be beyond the company, you really have to wonder what the hell is going on at noa. does noa have ANY say as to what happens with nintendo in america? i can understand that ncl has trouble understanding what the americans want, but what's noa's excuse?
