Wii Shop Update: Gradius ReBirth, Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars photo

Woah, hold up? How come nobody told me this? There's a new Gradius game?

Apparently, because it hits WiiWare today. Gradius ReBirth (Konami, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points) looks like its the newest installment of the popular shooter series, and looks to feature "remix" versions of levels featured in previous games. And if you think you're good at shooters, prepare to have that dream shattered, as the game also features worldwide leaderboards wit Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

If you're looking for a retro game that hasn't been updated or remixed at all, then Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) is for you. Now might be a good time to bring this up -- what the hell is Alex Kidd? In all of the art I see for the game, he looks human. But when you play it, he's got weird monkey/bat ears. It's all very confusing; I'd appreciate some clarification for my cosplay.

Wii-kly Update

One WiiWare Game and One Virtual Console Game Added to Wii Shop Channel

Remember when Grandma used to mark your height on the wall every so often, just to see how fast you were growing? Well, if the Wii™ Shop Channel had its own growth chart, she’d be impressed at how the selection of great games keeps getting bigger and bigger each week. Take a look at the latest additions and you’ll discover a pair of different yet equally engaging titles: a thrilled-packed WiiWare™ shooter and a classic SEGA adventure for the Virtual Console™. Thanks to this steady stream of new games, your own library ought to be growing up fast, too.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

WiiWare

Gradius ReBirth (Konami, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Blast your way through levels filled with alien spaceships and otherworldly creatures in this retro side-scrolling shooter. Pick your weapons carefully and upgrade them to create a devastating arsenal of space-aged weapons that will aid you in your challenging mission. Players can post their high scores to worldwide leader boards via Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection and see where they rank against all the other Gradius ReBirth players. Test your skills with Gradius ReBirth and see if you have what it takes to beat this action-packed arcade shooter.

Virtual Console

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars™ (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, Crude Humor, 500 Wii Points): In this platformer from the 1980s, help Alex Kidd in a race against time to find the 12 missing zodiac signs hidden in six challenging levels—including toyland, the robot factory and an outer-space level—all complete with crazy enemies.

The list of downloadable games is updated weekly on Nintendo’s Online Press Room at press.nintendo.com. For more information about Wii, please visit wii.com or contact:

Gradius!!! I can't believe that they're putting something out for Wiiware that isn't family bingo party sandcastle building. Also, Alex Kidd the Lost Stars is (according to my fading memory) not as good as Miracle World but a not bad platformer.

As usual it will soon be forgotten and people will continue saying wiiware has nothing to offer.
Nintendo really needs to get there finger out and promote some of the games on there.

Alex Kidd...
Such a distant memory... I remember playing a helluva lot of Miracle World. That game was one difficult bitch! Lost Stars? I think the game was pretty easy in comparison. And Enchanted Castle for the Genesis was cool... Then. I wonder how these games are now. Hmmmm?!
Janken fight!

That's funny, I was working on a Vic Viper model made of LEGO. It's almost done! What a strange coincidence. someone at Konami is on the same wavelength. hah

Incidentally, I know I said I would get this the day it's released, but I ordered parts to swap out the joystick on my Fighting Stick Wii last week so I'm going to wait until those come in before I play it.

@Hoss
Yea, man... Weird game. Weird character.
I heard Lost Stars was based off the arcade game, which was a two player co-op game, I think. I remember seeing pictures of the game and, from I can remember, the graphics looked pretty cool.
Alex Kidd... Where are you?!
I heard SEGA has a new Alex Kidd in the works...
Maybe they are giving up on Sonic and making Alex Kidd the star mascot again! Imagine that?!
Alex Kidd in the next Smash Bros.?!
Ha ha!
