Wii Shop releases: Tiki Towers, Fun! Fun! Minigolf, Phantasy Star IV photo

If you were expecting a Christmas surprise from Nintendo this week, sorry to disappoint. This week's WiiWare and Virtual Console line-up looks relatively tame and unsurprising, although that's no necessarily a bad thing.

Hitting WiiWare this week will be Tiki Towers (RealArcade, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) and Fun! Fun! Minigolf (Shin’en Multimedia, 1-4 players, 900 Wii Points). Tiki Towers looks to be a tiki construction game, where as Fun! Fun! Minigolf features twice the fun of other minigolf games, apparently.

Possibly more relevant to your interests is the arrival of Phantasy Star IV (SEGA GENESIS, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) on the Virtual Console. This is the Phantasy Star game where Chaz Ashley has to fight the Russian in a knock-down, drag-out brawl across the Algo solar system.

Spending any Wii Points this week?

Wii-kly Update

Two WiiWare Games and One Virtual Console Game Added to Wii Shop Channel

Did you think Grandma’s house was the only travel destination on your itinerary this holiday season? Think again. Thanks to the Wii™ Shop Channel, you’ve got some extraordinary places to see, from tropical islands and exotic golf courses to a faraway planet in need of triumphant heroes. Whether you play solo or with family and friends, these awesome new offerings are sure to deliver an extra dose of holiday cheer.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

WiiWare™

Tiki Towers™ (RealArcade, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): Tiki Towers is a game of construction, destruction, problem-solving and monkeys. Reclaim the islands of your tribe by defeating a series of evil enemy chiefs. Work with your monkey friends to build towers out of bamboo poles, coconuts and vines. Match wits against the enemy chiefs bent on destroying your towers and driving you from the islands. Navigate levels filled with crazy building challenges, and deal with unfriendly wildlife and other environmental obstacles. Get your monkeys to chant for the BananaMana necessary to counter enemy attacks. Play in either single-player or two-player cooperative mode in this game where monkeys rule.

Fun! Fun! Minigolf (Shin’en Multimedia, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 900 Wii Points): Play minigolf with your friends in beautiful environments. Choose a character and turn your Wii Remote™ controller into a golf club. With its easy-to-use controls, all you need to do is aim, swing and see who’s the best putter. Play 27 holes spread across America, Asia and Europe. Enjoy exotic locations all over the world. Go for gold in single-player mode, or invite your friends. Fun! Fun! Minigolf supports up to four players. You can use one to four Wii Remote controllers. Fun! Fun! Minigolf is the ultimate party game for everyone.

Virtual Console™

Phantasy Star™ IV (SEGA GENESIS, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Fantasy Violence, Mild Sexual Themes, 800 Wii Points): Phantasy Star IV is the fourth released game from SEGA’s epic Phantasy Star series, one of SEGA’s biggest RPGs on the SEGA GENESIS. In the year AW 2284, planet Motavia is once again plagued by strange biocreatures, and it’s up to the brave men and women of the Hunters Guild to exterminate them. You are Chaz Ashley, a rookie Hunter straight out of training who is supported by Alys Brangwin—a crafty veteran whose good looks and prowess with the blade have earned her an awesome reputation. These two Hunters, along with a cast of supporting characters, will go beyond Motavia to unwittingly save their entire solar system.

If I didn't already have Phantasy Star IV in multiple forms, I would get it. It's such an awesome RPG.

If anyone has yet to play PS4, they should go do so pronto. It's seriously up there with the SNES FF's and Chrono Trigger as the best RPG's of the generation, but it doesn't get nearly as much love.

I've got the Sega Genesis Collection version already so I'm all set. Still, always glad to see out there for people to snag.

A friend of mine owns the Genesis cart, too. Every night I plot to destroy him and take it as the spoils of victory. I always cry that the plan will go into effect soon, but we usually end up playing Mega Bomberman instead. I guess it evens out there.

PS4 is one of the best, most overlooked gems of the 16-bit RPGs. It may not be quite as good as FF6 or Secret of Mana or Earthbound, but it's up there. And definitely worth the 800 points, given you don't already have it in some compilation or another.

I actually have the cart, but I lost the box and manual when I was a kid. I'm not sure how it happened, as I was quite conscious of keeping those things even then.. and it was like my favorite game.

Holy wow! I love Phantasy Star IV! It's my favorite RPG of the 16-Bit era! If I wasn't currently working through de Blob, Super Mario RPG and Okami (Wii) I'd totally spend the money I don't have to play P.S. IV.

As a complete minigolf whore, I wanna hear how Fun! Fun! Minigolf is, to see if I should be seething with jealousy toward Wii owners yet. (As it stands, I'm currently at "Eh, Maybe a Little.")

My God. This is the week I've been waiting for! I have two whole weeks to sit down and do nothing but bask in the glow of Phantasy Star IV on my Wii. Of course, this would be the perfect time for me to only bring home my Xbox. >.<

I'm happy just knowing it's out on VC finally! I have something to look forward to playing on Wii when I get back to school!

I already have PS4 for my Genesis. But if people don't have it yet, by all means get it!
