Wii sells 3.2 million in 2006; just misses 4 million promise photo

Nintendo fans have come out and voiced their pleasure as Nintendo announced today that they sold 3.2 million units worldwide of their new console, the Wii -- just shy of the 4 million promised for the year. All the info:

Nintendo says it has sold 3.19 million Wii machines worldwide, 1.25 million in North America, 1.14 million in Japan and 800,000 in Europe.

Although this figure is shy of the promised 4 million sold by the end of 2006, company spokesperson Yasuhiro Minagaw said the target had been met because some of the units were going through distribution. However, stocks of Wii are still extremely hard to find. Minagaw said Nintendo would hits its 6 million target of Wiis shipped by March 31, with a further million units manufactured.

After all the uber Nintendo fans buy the Wii, will anyone else?

At the moment they're selling out 'cause of the buzz thats created by no-one being able to get them. But if nintendo don't pull their finger out and get some top games out to the public, when consoles are readily available sales will probably suffer.
I really hope this doesn't happen.

I'm hardly an uber-fanboy. I own a DS, which I only got last month, and I've never owned or particularly liked Nintendo's consoles or major franchises. (Actually, I've only ever owned two consoles - a sega genesis and an xbox 360)

But Wii Sports is fun. And Rayman is fun. And elebits is fun.

So when they showed up on Amazon on tuesday, I snapped one up.

Do you honestly think those moms are buying those Wiis for themselves? They're moms. They have children. Children are spoiled.

I just noticed, in the picture...

In order for Mario to get coins out of that ? box, he's going to have to punch that guy in the junk. Awesome costume idea, poor design.

Eww, I also just realized... If he punched the box, a "mushroom" could spring out as well. Yeah.

I sure wont buy it, no good games and i have already a 360, there's no point in buying this system until good games come out.

From my personal experience, everyone I know who owns a DS has bought, or is actively looking for a Wii. These are not people who I would call the uber-Nintendo faithful either. Just people in their mid to late 20's and early 30's who used to game and love the DS because of the innovation and "small dose" gaming. They see the Wii as a way to get the same experience but in their living room with all of their friends. For them (and me) the 360 and PS3 are way too expensive and don't provide the same type of enjoyment.

I know this is just a small sample of people in a much larger market, but I think Nintendo is aiming at the right consumers. Word of mouth on the Wii is HUGE. Everytime I tell someone I have one they immediately want to come over and try it out. Now they just need to back it up with more quality 1st and 3rd party titles.

Who says it's just uber fans buying and why wonder why people will stop buying at all? Why could ask the same inane question about PS3 or 360.

existonfile- Well I'm a 20 something with a DS that used to be a big nintendo fan that ISN'T looking for a Wii.

I am really looking for the small dose gaming that the DS offers. Turn on the system and be playing in less than 1 minute and play for 5-15 minutes. The wii doesn't, or hasn't shown me, that it has those games.

The arcade sytle games from Xbox and PS3 are more that style but not quite either. I like my DS but I hate playing on the small screen at home.

And when the hell is missing your target by 800k "just shy" that is almost a %25 missed target! I can carry that logic.
I'm "just shy" of being a millionare.

im no uber fan but i bought a wii as soon as i got a chance, its actually the first nintendo system i've owned, so far the games havnt been great for it, but im confident they'll get better.
Ive also got my 360 to keep me busy.
Whether your a nintendo fanboy or not, im pretty sure everyone's gonna get a wii sooner or later.

Joseph, have you played anything on the Wii yet?

Please see:

Wii Sports - quick round of any of those games lasts no longer than 15 min, fun for yourself and whole family

Warioware - you can't get much quicker than 3 sec minigames

Elebits - most levels are under 15 min, fun to destroy rooms

Large collection of Virtual Console classics that have a suspend feature so you can leave them at any point and come back to that same point later.

I guess the real question is, what kind of games are you looking for on the Wii that they haven't released yet?

It's amazing how people can spin anything when they either want to get higher article activity by messing with fanboys or just want to tear into the current media darling. Seems to me that history shows that there is always a drought in games post-Christmas season, whether it is with a system launch or not. Launch systems simply get the shorter end of the stick.

Most systems launch with one system seller and maybe a second if they are lucky which is then followed by a drought until the next killer app arrives usually a year later. How long into the Xbox's life cycle was Dead Rising and Gears of War released? And it's not like every title released between Oblivion and Dead Rising was anything to write home about. The exact same thing is happening with the PS3.

So the Wii won't get big name titles for a while. Big surprise. Why not bring it up for the PS3 too? Or why not even attempt to put it in a historical context? Because doing so wouldn't generate nearly as much flame and really, what's the fun in that, right?

I've owned every Nintendo console, and was dead set on getting a Wii. Then I realized that besides Zelda, there weren't any other games coming out at launch or in the near future that warranted me buying the system. The lack of any initial online play also factored into my dwindling interest in the system. So I decided to hold off.

I instead went with a 360, the first non-Nintendo system I've owned since the Atari 2600. Between Gears of War, Rainbow Six:Vegas, and soon to be released games like Crackdown and Assassin's Creed, I'm more than happy with the choice I made. I honestly don't see myself getting a Wii anytime soon, if at all.

If anybody cares ha.

As superficial as this sounds I'm thinking that a $25-50 price drop by summer , and some new cool colours wil blow the lid off the sales of this thing. Then late in the year a redesigned Wii with DVD playback and the new rumoured controller will keep the ball rolling. By the then the hype and installed base will have to get more 3rd parties attention and the rest will take care of itself.

Um...about the Nintendo fanboy crack..just about everyone I know wants a Wii and just about NONE of them are Nintendo fanboys or even video gamers!

But at least give Nintendo some credit by admitting they didn't sell 4 million, instead of saying "Oh we shipped 4+ milllion units!"

@Bahamut_Zero

Initially, I was kind of pissed because that news came out about a week or two after I got my 360. But I really don't think I'll have any HDD issues as I don't plan on ever downloading any movies or having a huge game library where I'd be running out of space.

The noise and heat thing I think is over blown. When I'm playing, I don't even notice the noise coming from the console. As for over heating, I've checked the console a few times after some 2-3 hr gaming sessions, and any of the heat I've felt doesn't concern me. Definitely can't fry an egg on it, like I've hear some people say ha.

BTW...Mega Man doing the cabbage patch = awesome.

Theres plenty of good games out for the Wii already,

Sports is a great pack in

Zelda is amazing

Elebits really shows off what the controller can do and its fun to boot

Wario Ware is great as well and pretty quirky

That rounds off the games I have so far for the Wii, Im sure there will be at least a game every month or two thats worth purchasing.

I'm not sure how they hoped to hit 4 million if they never achieved the production rate to match that. Still 3 million buyers in two months is a lot of word of mouth advertising.

Given the press coverage over xmas showing FAMILIES playing together you'd think this is breaking into all sorts of markets.

As for fanboy only purchases. If that was true this would be selling at the same rate as the GC was or perhaps 1.5 times the rate. ;/ Still Summa being incapable of seeing anything but his own imagined reality is becoming quite the norm, and he has the cheek to think Sony's PR has lost the plot!

Yes I miss Ishaan's articles. Good reading without needing cheap tricks to attract faux hits.

Jelster, there's a difference between families playing the Wii together on Thanksgiving and each individual member buying one of their own. As I recall, a few editors here had success in getting their parents to play with the system and have fun, but they all didn't feel it was worthy of their money and time spent.

Erm didn't Niero post a story not even a week ago about going to Circuit City to grab a Wii for his Dad? These are exactly the sort of sales that'll push the Wii demographic in the short term and later the new users will push it themselves within their own peer group.

I wonder if Niero is interested in following up with a post about what his Dad plans to play on it? I'm interested in his computer and gaming background. Whether the Wii channels are more appealing to non PC users who haven't been spoilt by RSS feeds and realtime radar displays.

The rest of the writers on DTOID regularly put him to shame.

He's just a news source that tags on a question or something controversial to get hits. It works but I hope Dtoid will soon be in a position to not need it to drive traffic to the site. It lessens the impact of those who enjoy writing fun, informative or debatable posts and attracts an ugly "fanboy" like audience.

God = Don't actually exist or do anything, be followed by mindless drones.

Actually its a tough choice. Can we come back at the end of 2008 and see if the American public finally decide to stop rewarding stupidity like its a good thing. In the mean time I'll settle for
