Wii sales proving unstoppable photo

Despite a lack of killer software, the Wii is proving to be quite the piggy bank for Nintendo. According to the latest numbers, this little white console has sold more than 6.5 million units worldwide since its launch in late November. According to the latest numbers from Japan, the system is catching on rather fast -- though not as fast as the PlayStation 2. From Next Gen:

The Nintendo Wii has now sold over 2 million Wii hardware units in Japan as of April 13, Famitsu publisher Enterbrain reported today. The Wii reached the milestone in about 19 weeks, not quite beating the speedy sales of the PlayStation 2, which sold the same amount in the 15 weeks after its launch.

In all honesty, how long can this trend continue? At what point does a lack of real software catch up to the overall demand of just the console itself? Can the Wii survive on hope alone for the next year?

The hype and people wanting something they just cant have is definately helping nintendo - no doubt.
But I'd say by next christmas there'll be enough titles (multiplayer/party games at least) to keep its sales flying high.
But year, Nintendo will probably have a tough time in 2008 unless they pull something great out of their asses.

No way can this last much longer. Nintendo really need to get some killer titles out ASAP because I'm pretty sure that the sales'll fall just as quickly as they rised. I bought my Wii on launch, beat Zelda, played a shit load of Wii Sports, bought a few VC games and now I haven't played it for about 3 months. It's just a £180 paper weight sitting on my desk gathereing dust. Shame really... Nintendo have a knack for this, releasing a console, then giving us a huge dry spell without any good games.

Yeah...I'd buy a Wii if there were more than one or two games worth playing. I honestly can't name many more than Zelda, Red Steel, and Madden. Maybe I just suck.

i like my wii, but it isn't my most played system. and i have only bought one game for it, the rest have been rentals. i just think this is getting ridiculous. i is now painfully clear that nintendo has completely abandoned their hardcore audience and now only caters to the casuals. i see this as both a good and a bad thing though. as they bring in more non-gamers they create a new segment of the politician that would, theoretically, be more resistant to anti-game legislation, at the same time nintendo is ignoring the people who got them were they arem the people who bought a gamecube just because they loved everything on the 64 (myself included) and who shelled out twice as much as necessary for their repackaged gamecube. even now, i do not regret my purchase, but i am still saddened knowing that my once loyal company has abandoned me. so, my original analysis still stands- this is ridiculous.

I haven't even turned on my Wii since I beat Zelda. I think the fact that Zelda was also a port, it left a sour taste in my mouth. People need to stop porting shit to the Wii and build a game from the ground up, with the Wii in mind.

Q:Can the Wii survive on hope alone for the next year?
A: Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros, Super Mario Galaxy.

All of these titles are coming out this year.

ok, but honestly, the wii only has a handful of announced titles and the only real third party support has been shitty port after shitty port. from an economics perspective this is good, but it is also flooding a market with really bad games.

The lack of software will eventually make a dent in the number of sales of Wiis to the 'hardcore' audience. But this is irrelevent as there are maybe 10-20M hardcore Nintendo fans worldwide nad they have all already bought a Wii.

The real market is casual gamers, and this is nothing new despite what Nintendo PR would have you believe. The PS2 sold 120M units and 100M of those are casual/moderate (read NON-hardcore) who bought the console as a cheap DVD player and/or to play a couple of titles, like Buzz/DDR/Sing Star etc.

The Wii and any other console priced ~$200 will sell well if it has just 1 USP. The novelty factor is more than enough to keep selling the machine for another year or more. The DS sells a bucket load of units based just on Brain Training and will continue to do so because there is very little else like out there in the gaming space.

There are plenty of people out there who are more than happy to own the machine with a single game. Nintendo know this and thus the most advertised DS games are still the Touch Generation titles - Brain Training, Big Brain Academy, Tetris DS etc.

The Wii can and will survive on just Wii Sports until the next similar game comes out (Wii Fitness/Big Brain Wii Degree etc.)

Hardcore games for Hardcore gamers make no difference what so ever because the hardcore already bought their console. Sure they want to push software sales, but as far as hardware goes there is absolutely NO NEED for nintendo to roll out more AAA titles.

I remembering reading about Nintendo's plans for the "Revolution" in EGM back in the spring. What those who can't believe the Wii's sales fail to realize is that they aren't going for the same group as Sony and Microsoft. As EGM said, they're going for "the big prize : everyone else." To all the people who couldn't care less about gaming until they saw the Wii and thought it was neat, there are no other systems. My mom bought a Wii and a DS after not having played video games for more than a decade; and I bet she wouldn't be able to name a single PS3 game, or any 360 game other than Halo and the one's she's bought for my brother.

Right now, the Wii popularity is based on so-called "novel value" in that the motion-sensing is neat. But it's such a powerful force that by the time it wears off, Brawl and Galaxy and Corruption and all of the Wii's other big titles will have already come out.

so basicly, you get a Wii to play the most innuitive games!

Mario, Zelda, Metroid!

Names you probably never ever heard b4!

/end-sarcasm

seriously, nintendo is whoring those names more than Squeenix is whoring FF. and ladies n jets... thats not a good thing.

Ill give nintendo one prop... I would feel rather safe buying a wii for my kids due to its non-violent look & lineup for healthy VG or family who dont really play VG at all. Other from that... meh.

You know, man. I have 3 games for the Wii:Zelda, SSX and Paper Mario. With the Xbox360 I have 5. Hasn't the Xbox been out longer?

And besides, with those Wii games, a small handful of classics such as Kid Ick and OoT, and a damn good internet browser, I'll take it all with pleasure.

Also, Gears of War is mediocre.

A funnier picture would be Reggie pasted onto the box art for Duke Nukem 3d with wiimotes for guns. I think developers will start churning out some decent original games towards the end of the year, until then I think it would help if nintendo threw out an occasional free VC game.

The system is incredibly appealing to everyone, by not catering exclusively to the hardcore gamer (or even regular gamer), they've opened up their audience to just ANYONE who wants to have fun.

So people are buying them. It's a totally non-threatening system, unlike a 360 or a PS3.

The better question to ask though: is what they're doing with it a week/month later, after the novelty has worn off.

We should also remember this: the profit on console sales for Nintendo is almost nothing. No matter how many units they sell, if the people who buy one aren't interested in anything but Wii Sports, what will their software sales and therefore profits be like?

Let's see, only been out since November and there's Wii Sports, Zelda, Excite Truck (I fell in love with it after I rented it and got used to the controls), Super Paper Mario, some really good VC games, Sonic and the Secret Rings is pretty decent, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and SSBB coming out this year and actual 100% compatibility for GameCube titles....where is this software drought? I guess you must be referring to Sony with their excellent lineup since the PS3 came out at the same time....oh wait....

There's plenty of software for the Wii considering how long it's been out. I own 6 titles for the Wii and about as many VC games. I have plenty to play. And so does everyone I've shown it too, who ended up buying one, which is nearly everyone I've shown it to. Having talked to them alot about it, no one seems to think there is a lack of software. There is only a lack of software if you are hunting for a gears or halo clone, which most adult gamers are not. I had a blast with Excite truck, Red Steel was far from perfect but guilty fun, Zelda was fantastic, Wii sports amazing, Warioware is fun but short lived, I really enjoyed CoD3 and now I'm having a ball with Super Paper Mario. I still want to put more time into SSX Blur and I plan to pick up Godfather:BH. Most of the people I know with a Wii are in the same boat. Admittedly we don't slave over games 20 hours per week, but those gamers are not the Wii's target audience, and thankfully for me. I can't play games that take a ton of time anymore. Oblivion looks great but I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. I have too much going on in my life to justify that type of time commitment.

Not suprising the Wii didn't outsell the PS2. Didn't the PS2 launch only in Japan? The wii launched globally and had to allocate units to 3 major regions simultaneously. The fact that it even came close to the PS2 is unbelievable.

Well the reason online play with people you don't know is fun isn't the social interaction, but that it's a lot more interesting than putting yourself up against mere AI. As for the Wii, the original Xbox started off with no multiplayer too, and it ended up the multiplayer kind of its generation by a long-shot.

I've thought of some things to hold against the Wii in different discussions, but I was happy to find myself proven wrong.

Wii haters don't seem to have any reason to hate it other than that it is doing well.

"You people who think its just for kids ARENT playing it. "

@Kannon,

The people who think it's just for kids, ARE kids. I don't know many 20 or 30 somethings who don't realize what video games are and are not. Video games are inherently childish because they allow you to "play pretend". I would argue that more teen agers like to pretend to be big tough guys killing things than adults do. I would wager that more late teens play gears than any other demographic. BTW, late teens are kids to me so thats why I thing gears is a less mature title. I would argue that the Wii targets 2 age groups most intensely, the 5-12 and the 23+. Its the 13-22 year olds that are scared to death of playing a game that might be considered "kiddie". I'm 32 and have long since lost my fear of what others think of the games I play. My 3 year old nephew feels so cool because he gets to wear his "big boy undies". You see the old ones were for BABIES and hes a "big boy" now. Yeah, he still pisses his pants sometimes but damnit, he's not a baby! Thats what i hear when people call the Wii kiddie. They are saying, "I play video games just like a little kid does so I have to somehow make my games sound cool and their games sound lame so no one mistakes the fact that we are both engaged in the EXACT SAME activity, controlling an on screen avatar with our thumbs.

Summa, you depress me man.

I didn't think people like you existed anymore, unfortunately they obviously do. You have such a dated view of what a games console is, in a couple of years you will sound like a whinging old man way out of his depth. You and like minded gamers are being left behind, and the sad thing is, you can't even see it. The Wii has been out about 6 months, it is first of all drawing in the casual gamers, then establishing itself, then it will kick into gear once developers and consumers fully understand what it is. How can you not see this? How can you not see what Nintendo are doing here?

Hardcore gamers with any sense, realize what is going on and are accepting that you can't have real change without a rough ride to begin with, right now with the Wii is experiencing the classic teething problems of something genuinely new and different. It is not suffering from lack of software, it does not lack quality games, it just simply doesn't satisfy some hardcore gamers who want it to be something it is clearly not.

Dinosaurs like Summa take way too much offense at an affordable console which has decided to involve everyone, this inclusive approach from Nintendo would have had to happen eventually so don't blame the Wii for a change that was inevitable anyway, if Nintendo didn't create the Wii then someone at some stage would have had to take a step back, take a deep breath and decide to calm things down and release a proper accessible, affordable home console, instead of a piece of hardware with an indentity crisis that is trying to be a PC.

Prices for powerful PC's are still falling, when someone can buy a UHD version of Lost Planet for their PC, a kitted out PC which only costs marginally more than a PS3, will the current Sony vision of what a home console is remain a sustainable business? No way.

Why do you hate the Wii Summa? Are you threatened by it because "Methinks the lady doth protest too much."

This current scenario with the Wii is an exact mirror of the DS, nobody thought the DS would sell and so nobody bothered developing for it in advance, they all hopped on the bandwagon once it became an obvious hit. In this rush, developers ported a load of GBA games, it wasn't until a good year into it's life that developers started producing proper DS software.

The Wii finds itself in exactly the same scenario, you're meant to be game journalist Summa, so why can't you see the obvious DS paralell? Blinded by your weird hate for the Wii? Snap out of it.

I don't see the Wii ever slowing down in sales.

The motion/laser pointer contorls aren't just a gimiick. They really can make playing games more fun. They add a level of diversity in gameplay experience that you can't get anywhere else.

And the diversity of software to hit the system just this year is also like nothing I have ever seen. No More Heroes, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime 3, Big Brain Academy, MySims, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Super Paper Mario, Resident Evil, Pokemon, Oopona, Godfather, this nutty new pirate game from Capcom, the Donkey Kong racer, Manhunt 2, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars 2, and Super Mario Galaxy, it's insane. Everything from 2D platforing to 3D crime fest, games for the most casual to the most hardcore is already covered.

It took the PS2 forever to get that kind of diveresity. The N64 and the GC never achieved that kind of diversity at all. And the Wii pulls it off with in a year.

If it isn't obvious to you why the Wii is selling so well, and that it will for at least the next year, then you don't understand the gaming audience at all.

When the Wii price drops to $99, it will be every gamers 1st or 2nd system. There is just too much going for it not to.

The idea that the Wii is a fad and that it will fade out makes little to no sense, and sounds more like wishful thinking on the part of Wii haters.

MGS4 and FFXIII will sell the PS3 in Japan for a brief time, just like Blue Dragon sold the 360 in Japan. But I just can't see how that can be enough to turn the tide.

It's the same principle that you find at a grocery store. You have a list of things you need to get but lo and behold, cat litter is 3 for a dollar??? Gotta get it! I always wanted a cat anyways... Basically I see most people's opinions go one of two ways.

First, there's the hardcore who figure, 'hell, i already spent $600 on a big sstem, what's another $250?" Then you got your 'I want next-gen but I can't affor $500 - $600." Oh, but I almost forgot. The 360's been cashing in a bit on retro (SF2 made a pretty penny if I remember correctly) but Nintendo is superior in that department, hands down. So the retro kids get what they want too.

I'm beginning to think that I'm one of the few that simply see it as a gimmick without a great use for the wiimote. When they make a highlander game for the wii, I will instantly have one... like magic... but until then, I have much patience.

I don't know what you are talking about, Summa,...I can't keep up with the flow of great Wii games. Then again I only have about an hour of disposable time a day at best.

I've been thoroughly entertained with the following stream of games:

Wii Sports
Excite Truck
Zelda Twilight Princess
Warioware
SSX Blur
Tiger Woods 07
Paper Mario

...all GREAT games!

I just got Paper Mario and I still have A LOT of play time left with SSX Blur and Tiger Woods...I seriously can't keep up. I'm sure there is a large portion of the population in my position, so I doubt sales will drop anytime soon. I think this is the best flow of games a Nintendo system has ever had directly after launch.

I'll tell you what, though. You head on down to your local Blockbuster or rental store of your choice, and grab a couple of Wii games. Games that have been mentioned in this thread. Games like Godfather: Blackhand Edition, SSX Blur and Tiger Woods 07, and even some Super Paper Mario if you haven't already played it, and give them a try. There are good games to be had for the Wii, but in your current trolling state, you've just been blinded to them. It's OK though, Robbert, we can work through this together. Summa not only is there alot of good games coming out this year, there is at least a dozen must have titles. Now im 17 and i agree, most of my hardcore gaming friends right now are saying the wii is stupid because they are all kiddie games, thus i believe they are compensating for something. But my gf who between her and her 15 year old brother owna a PS2, they both play it. He is the hardcore gamer and she is the casual gamer. Yes thats right, my GF who is actually a normal non summa looking person games, and she is hot as hell to boot. So you see the PS2 was looking out for everyone, the wii is doing the same. The wii is actually mirroring two consoles(im the first to ever mention this i think). It is mirroring the PS2 in the fact that it is appealing to the casual and the hardcore gamer(just not the hardcore quite yet), and the DS because it is innovative and appeals to everyone.

Also remember that a lot of the people that say the Wii isn't for hardcore gamers have both the 360 and the PS3, and a lot of them even have the Wii too, it isn't like its just a giant flame war. The Wii is literally aiming at a different demographic.

@subnet (AKA Summa basher)
You say people just bash Nintendo and the Wii because they don't want to be playing "kiddie games" yet guys like Wheat over at EG play cooking Mama on thier DS and give it great reviews, I sure wouldn't call that a mature game.

I can see this being a bit like movies, and Nintendo is Pixar. They make the best games for the people they are aiming at, and they are so good that they even bring in a good amount of people outside of who they are aiming at, but they simply don't deal with concepts that movies like Requiem For A Dream, Donnie Darko, Million Dollar Baby, and Gladiator deal with. And they can't dream of being as awesome as 300 or Terminator 2. They can't go as in-depth into a subject (technologically or philosophically) as Ghost In The Shell or The Matrix.

Shit, friends here, gotta go. Feel free to complain about my shitty half post.

So that movie concept was never drawn up by hollywood people, it was thought up by two students in college. The other two just happened because people wanted sequels. There is actually alot of movies in hollywood that are religious allegories, edward scissorhands is another one.

TheRob,

It has yet to be seen where the wii is truly aiming. We are only 19 wks in. LOL

On a side note, My aunt and uncle have decided to buy a wii, any idea at all where they can get one online? It seems every major online retailer is sold out.

Toys r' us is set to get a shipment on the 22nd, not that it will last long.

I think at this rate, Nintendo will hit the 10million mark by the end of the year, as long as they keep steady on sales.
