Wii owners bought 8 games per system in December photo

A friend visiting my house a few days ago pointed out how weak my Wii game collection was compared to the collections for the rest of the consoles I own. I agreed with her and pointed out that I was a bit behind in my purchases. It seems that my collection might be stronger had I purchased my Wii console in December of 2007.

Wii owners purchased 8.1 games for every system sold in the month of December according to NPD data. This great attach rate just barely beats out Xbox 360's figure of 7.8. The PS3 trailed with 5 games per console.

According to GamePro, the Xbox 360 leads with a lifetime attach rate of 7 games per system, while the Wii and PS3 follow with 4.6 and 4.3 respectively.

Over 8 games per system? Christmas season or not, that's an impressive number. We know that Super Mario Galaxy is included in that figure, but what else do you think made the list?

Uh huh. Can't think of 8 games worth playing?:

Wii Sports
Zelda TP
Metroid Prime 3
Mario Galaxy
RE:4 Wii
Zak and Wiki
Super Paper Mario
Warioware
Mario Strikers
Rayman Raving Rabbids (1)
RE: UC
Excite Truck
Elebits
No More Heroes

and those are only the generally well regarded ones... plenty of people also dig the various EA sports and/or shooters. I'm not saying everyone will LOVE all those games or even want to try em all, but come one, the NO GAAMEZ 4 WIIII meme is getting a little tired.

Who says you can't count a pack in as an attach? I'm damned sure sony is counting it's pack-in copies of Motorstorm and whatever the other one was. They damn well should be.

I have many. Battalion Wars 2
Metroid Prime:3
Super Mario Galaxy
one iteration of madden
one iteration of tiger
No More Heroes (Suda, Make NM2. Announce it and I'll pre-order.)
Zak n Wiki
Super Paper Mario
RE4
SSX Blur
Alien Syndrome (not sure why. . . RPG starved, I guess, it must've been before Mass Effect.)
Zelda:TP

I have also owned, but traded in
Metal Slug Anthology
Excite Truck
Trauma Center (still liked it better on the DS)

And I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

I laugh at the 2 or 3 people trying to somehow debunk these numbers or make excuses why it happened. Pathetic little fanboys. Sad, just sad.

It's pretty easy to pick out 5-10 great games for any type of person for the Wii, despite all the whining about the game selection.

However, even as a Wii fan, you must also admit that out of the average persons 8-game lineup...one is probably the crappy-but-free-remote Wii Play. And probably at least one or two other games they picked are among the crap. But, isn't that true of Xmas shopping in general? You get at least 20% crap?

@tincow,

There are PLENTY of crappy wii-games, but man, the Wii-play bashing really frustrates me, I love that game! I would pay $30 for it with no remote in a second.

8 actually sound about right, if you include the number of people who already own wiis and picked up a game or two this Christmas (like myself). For example, if one person picked up a Wii and a copy of Galaxy, and seven people grabbed Galaxy for their pre-existing wii, there you go: 8:1 attach rate.

Dukeman is right. The 8:1 doesnt only take into account new owners. All this really means is that 8 times as many games were sold as were wii's.

I'm sure this is a combination of

A. Mario Galaxy selling to many new/current Wii owners
B. New Wii owners getting their system by means of a bundle
C. The INSANE popularity of Guitar Hero 3.
D. The abundance of budget games that parents are sure to be buying for their kids..

Well, those of you nitpicking about the formula for attach rates not being accurate attach rates are missing the point. This is how ALL the consoles calculate attach rates. If Nintendo were to attempt the neigh impossible task of separating existing customer purchases from purchases with the console, they'd be the only ones.

@smoger,

"Dukeman is right. The 8:1 doesnt only take into account new owners. All this really means is that 8 times as many games were sold as were wii's. "

Thats all attachment rate ever is.
