Wii owners bought 8 games per system in December

Wii owners bought 8 games per system in December photo
     wii

A friend visiting my house a few days ago pointed out how weak my Wii game collection was compared to the collections for the rest of the consoles I own. I agreed with her and pointed out that I was a bit behind in my purchases. It seems that my collection might be stronger had I purchased my Wii console in December of 2007.

Wii owners purchased 8.1 games for every system sold in the month of December according to NPD data. This great attach rate just barely beats out Xbox 360's figure of 7.8. The PS3 trailed with 5 games per console.

According to GamePro, the Xbox 360 leads with a lifetime attach rate of 7 games per system, while the Wii and PS3 follow with 4.6 and 4.3 respectively.

Over 8 games per system? Christmas season or not, that's an impressive number. We know that Super Mario Galaxy is included in that figure, but what else do you think made the list?

Funny, I still only own 2 games for my Wii. Wii Sports and Zelda. And I'll probably only ever own 3 once Brawl comes out.

I got Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, and Battalion Wars 2 for Christmas. I've had my Wii since August, though.

As a side note, they were the first new games I got for my Wii since I picked up Scarface alongside my Wii. Hmm, maybe Nintendo has some data on THAT shit.

Jesus, 8 to 1?

Unless they count Virtual Console games, I only have two. I'm below average. :(

Probably a bunch of kids and stupid non gamers that picked up a few of these classics:

Minus the PS2 game, obviously.

There is a copy of that Ninjabread Man at the Best Buy I work at but no one knows how it got in the store because it doesn't have a scanable SKU so we can't sell it. It just sits in the back begging to be taken home and played.

I have 12 or so games on Wii. Attach rate of 8 for the month is great. I'm sure a lot of the 360 sales were christmas gifts just the same so parents buying games will skew both platforms.

Anyway, considering the bulk of the annual software sales happen at this time of year, this should help to dispel the myth that people aren't buying software for the Wii, then again fanboys will find a way to make it seem unimportant I'm sure. Lets see if they can keep up the competitive attach rates in the months to come.

Zelda
Mario Galaxy
Zack and Wiki
Resident Evil 4 Wii
Resident Evil UC
Elebits(I hate it)
WarioWare

I feel like something is missing. I honestly can't remember if I own any others. I think I do though, but it was probably so unmemorable that I can't think of it.

I place serious money on most of those games being part of a bundle the retailers made the customers buy. HMV in edinburgh were only selling wiis with a four game package and lots of accessories in late december.

Seriously? And that doesn't include VC games? Of all the Wii owners that I know, no one owns more than 4 Wii games. Hell, I can't even name 5.. How accurate ARE these statistics?

It would be nice to see what the games sells are responsible it probably is alot of Casual titles along a few biggies SMG etc since its holiday sales. My last few games I bought were Zack and Wiki, Super Mario Galixy, Nights, and No More Heroes. I hope every able body gamer buys No More Heroes and Zack and Wiki I want to see sequels.

How the hell do you have the time to play 8 new games during a month? Crazyness. My average is 1 new game a month, sometimes I get a couple when good titles come out and sometimes I go a couple of months without a new purchase..

Anybody who says they're only going to get like, 3 games for the system are robbing themselves of great games. Yeah, there's a lot of shit out there, but there are more than enough good nuggets of corn to make it worthy to pick through.

I think you're interpreting this a bit wrong. It seems to me that the Wii sold X number of units in December and also sold 8*X number of games. That doesn't necessarily mean that people who bought Wiis in December bought eight games with them. It could conceivably be that there are seven times the number of Wiis already in consumers' hands as were sold in December, and then everybody who owns a Wii bought ONE game.

I would guess GHIII is on that list, since it was a rare find come Christmas time. That and for Nintendo fans, it's the first in the series we can play. (I've played the others, but never owned a non-Nintendo console)

No way in hell US or UK buyers bought 8 games per wii. The Japanese probably buy every game released for the wii. They have no filter when it comes to japanese games they just buy buy buy. Look at the DS they have something like 2 or 3 per household. They're nutty.

Following up on Dexter's point, I think he's right in saying people are reading the summary line of this report literally.

What the data is more likely saying is that if everyone who had wanted a Wii for Christmas had been able to get one, the attach rate would have been much lower. But during the busy holiday season, Wii systems were supply-constrained while Wii games were not.

This study has left me scratching my head. From what I have been able to observe, the Wii's catalogue of games is its biggest weak point. No one that I know that has a Wii has more than 5 games in their collection, and all of these people have had their Wiis for more than a couple of months. I have four games. My 360 also takes up 99% of gaming time at my house, though.

Still, that number seems WAY, WAY high.

I have 6 games with Wii Sports being the only casual one.

The only games I bought in 2007 were Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy.

I'm going to try and get No More Heroes tomorrow. However, every store I have been two in the last week either had no copies or are still waiting for their first shipment to arrive. So frustrating. :/

I plan on picking up Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Okami in March.

If Wii sold about 1.7 million systems in NA in December (sorry, using vgchartz because I don't have NPD data) then about 13.6 million software units moved. This is about 1.7 games for every Wii owner, averaged over December. That's very good, but not as remarkable-sounding as 8 games for every console.

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I own 29 Wii games including Wii sports.
And I feel most of those were bought during the early "zomg I has new console, must buy gamez!" rush in the early days/months, when I first got the little white box.
But half of them are barely touched, and even the ones that are are mostly for multiplayer marathons (except Zelda, Metroid, Mario and Resi 4).
And since I got me 360, I can see myself playing Wii games even less. Which is a shame really.

I can't Help but feel the Wii will be the PS2 of this generation, a bestselling format, with only a fine slew of decent games lost in an ocean of tat.
Though saying that, I still haven't bought Zack and Wiki... My bad

Wii sports (over it)
RE 4 (beat it)
Super paper mario (got half way through boring now)
wii play (whats my motivation?)
mario party 8 (hate all in the series)
zelda (WORST IN SERIES and i sold it, seriously i really hated it because the world was big but felt so empty, i prefered OOT and MM because while smaller the world felt alive, i WANTED to do the side quests but in tp i wasn't motivated at all. Really disapointing)

I want medal of honour heroes 2 and mario galaxy.
not at all excited about brawl, just looks like the other 2 ssb games.

You realize how off your math is right. THat was 8 games per system sold, but that was all the other owners buying games. So your left with probably less than 1 game per system over decemeber...not that amazing really when you think about it considering how many systems there are.

Also, is wiiplay on the list? Because I know that it's been a huge seller in terms of games, but that's primarily because it comes with a wiimote and only costs 5 or 10 dollars more. I guarantee that this game alone is skewing those numbers higher than they should be.

Since Wii is (regretfully) being marketed to people who don't know the first thing about gaming, I'd say that a lot of shitty games are in that list. This does not detract from the Wii being an awesome console, however.

I have:

Wii Sports (2 discs, one broke)
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Warioware: Smooth Moves
Godfather:Blackhand Edition
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
No More Heroes
[I've payed in full for Brawl, so I technically own that as well]

On top of that, I've 16 Virtual Console games.

So, I'm around the average for the fantastic world of December.
