Wii News Channel goes live

12:04 PM on 01.26.2007   |   Nick Chester

Finally, an alternative to actually getting off of the couch and picking up a newspaper. Starting today, the Wii News Channel should be available in all regions. So, if you have a Wii, get to updating.

The news is broken up in a predictable fashion (national news, sports, arts & entertainment, etc.) so anyone who owns a computer and has surfed countless news sites should feel right at home. The addition of the interactive globe is a cool feature, as it will display the origin of the news, as well as give you the opportunity to scroll around and pinpoint areas for local news.

When you watch the above video, check out the irony of the first headline, which is about the European launch of the PlayStation 3. Oh, that crazy Associated Press. How about a section specific to Nintendo news, including screenshots, release date info, and more? Now that's something I'd actually use.

I liked the globe feature, but sometimes it was a bit off. There was a news story for Dublin, OH that ended up over Dublin, Ireland. But, the user interface is nice. I just hope they update it often, unlike the weather channel.I so wish they would fix the weather channel to update every 5-15 min or so. Ohhhh and radar with motion. SW33T!

The globe is awesome. If you look at the Providence Area from an angle the globe looks like the Tropicana orange with all the news stacked up like a massive skyscraper. lmao.

I'd love to check this out, mine's been sitting there downloading the update for 20 minutes now and still isn't even halfway there. Maybe after dinner.

I know. It's probably because my Wii is connected by the crappy DSL service in our back bedroom. It's so picky about what it will use that I can't get it to accept the cable connection in the living room.

Hushgush, I couldn't get my wireless to work on my Wii until I made the Wifi Channel 1 and put it into B and G mode. Maybe that'll help you.

When I opened up the Wii News Channel today, I also found the fact that there was PS3 news funny and ironic.

The first news story I saw on there this morning was about the lady who died for a Wii.

Then I flipped around the globe a bit and found an article from Greece! Athens! Neat!

Wait, no. It was an article from Athens, Georgia about someone named Ashley Awkward. It was just placed in Greece mistakenly.

I then turned off my Wii and did something fun with my day.

Am I the only one is disappointed that it is texted based news and none of it is even youtube video news. I can understand some text based news but come on, actually make the channels worth while.

Nintendo could have saved millions if it was a simple user populated RSS type system. Let me choose my news, keep your millions in AP payments...put them towards something like....oooo lets see, A FUCKING ONLINE MULTIPLAYER SYSTEM THAT DOESN'T SUCKASS!

You continually disappoint me Nintendo, I guess nobody can hold a shamrock in their ass that long....

I'd be impressed if it actually fuckin worked. I've been trying to download the update all day. I started the download over at one point, watched a dvd on my computer, played Lumines for an hour on the 360, played Lost Planet for an hour, switched back over to the Wii and it was still downloading. How big could the update possibly be, a couple of megs? I love the Wii and everything Nintendo is doing, but fucking hell this is as slow as it's been since launch day. I can download huge files off of XBL yet it takes hours to get tiny files to download to the Wii.

Amazing, it finally finished. I only had to restart the download (and by restart the download, I mean hold the power button down on the Wii until it shuts off, then turn it back on, as there's no way to abort a download) about 20 times in all before the update finally completed.

The news channel is pretty cool now that I've actually had a chance to see it. Zooming in and out on the text is kinda fun. I like the music, but wish there was an option to change it like in the photo channel. Or, it should at least change depending on what type of news you're viewing, like how the music is different whenever you go to view the weather depending on what the forecast is.

Maxx77...sounds like a personal problem with your service. I had no problems whatsoever with the download. It initiated and finished within a couple minutes.

Maybe it's just whatever server Nintendo has set up for people in the midwest. It's always been horribly slow to download anything on the Wii here. Today has been by far the worst experience yet. The Xbox, 360, and PC all download at blazing speeds though. Even the DS doesn't seem to take as long with its online functionality as the Wii.

I should add, the PSP (I tend to forget I even own one) downloads with much more success than the Wii as well. In what universe does that make sense?
