Wii need a good boxing game!

Wii need a good boxing game! photo

When it first came to light, the idea of Wii boxing made my loins quiver. Regrettably, what looked like a great idea on paper didn't translate as well as I would have liked when it came to the boxing game found on the Wii Sports pack-in. But you can't expect too much from a "free" game. So here I am, still waiting patiently for a worthy follow-up to Super Punch Out.

So imagine how fast I had to change my underwear when I saw that Japanese website Impress Watch had some new information on the new Hajime No Ippo (better known to the English speaking world as Victorious Boxers) for the Wii.

Sporting a slick cell shaded style that mirrors the anime/manga it's based on, Hajime No Ippo will make use of both the Wii remote and the nunchuck to target punches. The various buttons on both controllers will be used to deliver a variety of blows. Additionally, you can float like a butterfly and sting like a bee all over the damned ring using the analog stick found on the nunchuck controller.

Unfortunately, the game appears to only support one player (according to the official site) and there’s no word of a release outside of Japan. Victorious Boxers on the PS2 was not a huge hit outside of Japan (thanks to the anime art style, no recognizable boxers, and the fact that it wasn’t published by EA), so it’s likely that Hajime No Ippo might hit a few roadblocks on its way to the States.

Hear that? That's me crying all the way to my local importer.

Does anyone know yet if Freeloader will eventually come out with a Wii version? From what I've seen on 1up's Wii-periments, the GC version works flawlessly with the Wii to play non-ntsc GC titles.

Anything that would bypass the fiendish region encoding would be a godsend. Plus Hajime no Ippo was one of my favorite anime, that and if Bleach Wii turns out to be as good as Bleach DS, I just might have to import that as well.

HAJIME NO IPPO! Oh my thats been a few years, but too many good memories... they HAVE to bring the game over!... but they won't... so hopefully a good region free hack will make its way out before the release date!

Don't cry your way to the importer just yet. This from NeoGAF user sp0rsk, commenting on playing Hajime no Ippo at Nintendo World 2006:

I played hajime no ippo which WAS DOGSHIT. The control scheme works like this:

You point at the screen with the wiimote and depending on where you point ippo punches at that spot. Hold A and waggle to throw a hook and press C and twidle the analog stick to bob and weave. This game really really disappointed me. You really just stood there mashed A and waggled every so often. You couldn't tell when you actually hit the guy. You could barely see anything because you just aren't transparent enough. They seeeeeeeeeeeriously need to go back to the drawing board on this one. Total suckage.[/i]

Doesn't sound like the Punch-Out!!-like game that we want.

So its crap? We can always hope that EA or some other big studio does one when that new rocky movie gets his release.

There's a new Rocky game coming to the PSP! Well crap re: this game being "DOGSHIT." Super Punch-Out! on the VC is totally worth $8, though. So let's get on that, Nintendo.

In the 1st victorious boxers game for the PS2, you had to box a damn bear. And not some tekken guy with a bear head... but a real honest to god bear.

great 2 player action though

NetPhantom, there is a real honest to God bear in Tekken... complete with a bandanna and a quasi-moonwalk.

Ever since I played boxing on wii sports, I've been waiting, hoping, and fantasizing about how much sex I'd give my Wii if it had a deep, well-controlled boxing game. That game, if made, will be my future wife.

I'd rather be an EA hater than an EA player. The fact that they distribute "we love katamari" in Australia makes me queasy... and while I'm randomly bitching completely unrelated to this post... I think the need for speed games suck monkey puke through a curly straw. (>_<)\

I've been rabid about a good boxing game for the Wii. I'm really confused about why Nintendo doesn't think (or do they?) that Punch Out! was a great franchise. Super Punch Out! is fucking mad fun.

I think utilizing two Wiimotes (sans nunchuks) would be a neat way to play boxing games. If you have 4 Wiimotes, you could still play two players.
