Wii is the most expensive board game on Earth, claims Sega photo

If you're one of the many people who claim that the Wii is only played for a day before gathering dust on a shelf, then Sega has your back. Unlike you, however, Sega actually means it as a roundabout compliment. Sort of.

When giving his thoughts on the Wii, Sega A&R's head of content Darren Williams believes that: "... The Wii has become the most expensive board game on Earth - it's the kind of thing that families will play at Christmas, and probably won't play again throughout the remainder of the year. So things like Wii Sports, Wii Fit to a certain extent, that's great."

Williams also suggests that the Wii needs more titles, nodding to Sega's own House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld as two titles that the company is using to give thirtysomethings a reason to switch on their white box o' waggle.

It's nice to see Sega recognizing that not everyone with a Wii is after the kind of crap that Nintendo of America is pushing forward. Sega and Platinum Games are putting some interesting and compelling stuff on the Wii, and I hope they are rewarded in sales terms, because just like Overkill's trailer says: It's the hardcore you've been waiting for.

That's insulting to board games.

I think he's right. The Wii does have some of the best games of the generation though. No More Heroes, Super Mario Galaxy, SSBB.

This is how I personally view the console. I can't really have fun with it by myself save for 2 or so games, so I didn't buy one.

I just squealed out loud when I saw Atmosfear.

Best. Boardgame. Ever.

If it's just a board game, then why does the Wii have a better attach rate than the PS3?

Is it the BluRays?

Clearly this guy has not tried to get his hands on an original copy of Cosmic Encounter with all the expansions, in decent condition.

I have atmosfear in my cupboard downstairs. It's well funny.

Also, expensive boardgame:

It is true that most people owning a Wii almost never play them. Also, attach rate means nothing in a consumerist nation like the USA. They buy the games, then never play.

That's what the guy from Sega is trying to say, but nice try Johnathan Holmes.

Who could have predicted back in the '90s that some of the most anticipated titles on a Nintendo console would be developed by Sega?

Its pretty much official now, but, besides the huge attach rate, the Wii is, in my opinion (which is always correct) the Dreamcast of this generation.

@ Lightthrower

So you've been to the house of everyone on Earth who owns a Wii, and you've noted that by and large, they just sit there collecting dust? Or is your post just more of that anecdotal evidence stuff that people are so fond of these days? :P

I wish I got as much enjoyment out of my Wii as I do from a good game of Monopoly...

Well I think the point that the guy is trying to make is right, but still its two years into the Wii's life. So why wasn't Sega there from day one with some Mature Hardcore titles?

The Wii can't just be a Family Friendly console it needs more hardcore Mature titles as well, and Sega has 3 good ones coming out in early 2009 with HOTD: OverKill, MadWrold, and the Conduit. But it better not stop there either keep the hardcore support coming Sega!

I have not played mine in about 5 months and my GF plays gamecube games on it, true story.

I HATE board games unless drinking is involved.
