Wii hacker Johnny Lee is working on Project Natal photo

Here's a little tidbit of news that may give the doubtful more faith in how well Microsoft's Project Natal will work once out from the conference and into the living room; Johnny Chung Lee, the man famous for creating his own headtracking device for the Wii, among other modifications to make better use of the system's sensors, has revealed that he is part of the Project Natal team. Here are a few words from the man himself on what he thinks of the project:

Speaking as someone who has been working in interface and sensing technology for nearly 10 years, this is an astonishing combination of hardware and software. The few times I’ve been able to show researchers the underlying components, their jaws drop with amazement... and with good reason.

The 3D sensor itself is a pretty incredible piece of equipment providing detailed 3D information about the environment similar to very expensive laser range finding systems but at a tiny fraction of the cost. Depth cameras provide you with a point cloud of the surface of objects that is fairly insensitive to various lighting conditions allowing you to do things that are simply impossible with a normal camera.

According to his personal blog, he wishes to express that he is but a small part of a very talented team of individuals, but just knowing that he is there makes me feel a little better about Natal. It still seems pretty far-fetched that the system is expected to work as well as shown at Microsoft's conference yesterday, but Johnny Lee's smaller pet projects have blown our minds plenty of times before.

Nintendo should have scooped him up months ago. Now they're paying for their stupidity.

What NihonTiger90 said. Great idea on Microsoft's part though. I'm actually excited for Project Natal. Not that I wasn't before.

So is it going to be called "Natal" at release? If they're trying to capture some of Nintendo's market I think they need a more straightforward name that actually gives hints of what it does.

Nintendo deserves one hell of a scare... They have become so full of themselves that they managed to make me, a lifelong fan, despise them...

I had a feeling Johnny was involved. I now have high confidence in Project Natal.

Hi, Nintendo? You screwed the pooch on this one.

yeah. Nintendo totally should have scopped him up, if for not other reason than to keep him busy :D

Hell, Nintendo should've gotten him just to keep away from the competition.

As unexcited as I am about Natal, I've got to give props to Microsoft for grabbing Johnny over there. He worked so hard on Nintendo hardware, yet Nintendo did nothing about it. Their loss.

Hell, just having him on the team may make Natal that much more interesting.

Natal is simultaneously making me excited and terrified. It's the whole HAL 9000/Skynet factor. I'm almost hoping it won't work as well as they promise, as it will mean a few more precious years free from the machine's slavery of the human race.

Why the fuck would Nintendo (or any Japanese company) have picked up some random youtube hero from the states to work on their hardware? That's possibly one of the stupidest things I've ever heard anyone say. Just speaking from a realistic standpoint, nobody at Nintendo of Japan has probably ever even heard of this guy.

I'm not saying the stuff he did wasn't fun, but it's just a fucktarded thing to be saying ZOMG WAI DIDN'T NINTENDO HIRE HIM?

And I don't really give a shit about any of this stuff on any platform, so w'ever. Real advances in play control at a VR kind of level are going to come from interpreting brain signals and the like, not from some idiots waving around in front of a camera.

weird, Im actually more interested in project natal now. Lee here showed what the wii was <actually> capable of, and if he's on the engineering team for natal, this device might not actually burst into flames .
