Wii Guitar Hero III rocks harder than the rest, adds rumble photo

IGN went hands-on with the Wii version of Guitar Hero III, and have posted some first (and revealing) impressions of the guitar "shell" that will ship with the game. According to IGN, setting up the guitar is easy -- simply snap the controller into a small compartment on the back of the controller (as shown), snap the compartment door in, and viola! Seem like a bit of work, but that's what roadies are for, right?

The Wii version of the controller will also rumble when Star Power is activated, and the Wii remote's speaker will make the "like nails on a chalkboard" squeal when a note is missed. Additionally, the game will support the Nintendo Wi-fi connection, although the developers were tight lipped as to what that will entail (one can hope online multiplayer, at least).

Rumble and speaker squeals are pretty cool features, indeed. But is this enough for multiplatform holders to forsake HD graphics and confirmed online modes and DLC? In any case, it's nice to see Activision (and GH III Wii developer) Vicarious Visions upping the stakes and playing to the consoles strengths.

Now, can someone explain to me why there's rumble in a guitar? That's like adding rumble to Trumpet Hero.

Never fear, the rumble on the wii controller is so insignifact that noone will feel it anywayz.

@A Gentle Chiefman-nice name change.

Yeah, I have to echo other's opinions on rumble: real guitars don't rumble, not even if you are doing awesome. And why would the guitar itself squeak when you mess up? It wouldn't, the sound would come from the amp, along with the rest of the music.

I think Activision is at least trying to be creative and give the Wii some special features of its own, but honestly, they're moving further away from playing a real guitar at a time when Rock Band's Stratocaster-based guitars are moving closer to a realistic guitar.

I'm all for the rumble. I understand why those looking for a real guitar simulator wouldn't want it in. I have a guitar, actually thre guitars, and if any of them started rumbling, I'd be pissed.

Guitar Hero on the other hand, that I'd like to have rumble.

Trumpet Hero as well.

It's a game, not a real guitar. Rumbling could add more to the experience. That's all I'm saying. I didn't put it in there.

As for it being online, I would not be surprised if it were not online. I'm just saying that it supports Wi-fi, that's all. Maybe leaderboards. Who knows. I don't care one way or the other. I already have an Xbox 360 guitar controller, so I know what version I'll be playing this Fall.

THIS IS NOT A REAL GUITAR. It's a game. I'm really looking forward to this personally. I couldn't care less about the rumble or mic stuff, because you're not going to feel or hear it anyway. I'm just going to be playing it for Dragonforce anyway.

It's nice that they included it. It's also nice that you can turn the rumble and remote speaker off.

Are you even going to be able to feel the rumble? In my experience the wiimote rumble is pretty weak and you probably won't feel anything with that giant guitar. It'll be like what a prostitute feels with an asian man.

@ Tron Knotts:

I have a bass, actually three basses, and if any of them started rumbling, I'd be so happy I'd piss myself.

I reckon GHIII will be online, actually. In 2008, you are gonna see more Wii games online, and with downloadable tracks a huge part of the game now, I seriously doubt they'd leave the Wii out. Its certainly not like normal multiplayer online play, anyway.

The Wiimote will add its own thing to the experience, just wait and see. Sure, guitars don't rumble, but guitars when hooked to amps can give off feedback. I guess this is what they are trying to do. A good idea.

What do you mean rhythm games 'in general' don't need rumble? Frequency and Amplitude were playable because you had rumble. It gave you a beat that you couldn't feel by just pressing buttons.

In GH's case, we're just talking about rumble in response to things such as star power or vs. items, not in anything that will greatly alter your ability to enjoy the game's dope rhymes. It just enhances your feeling of being a true Guitar Hero in a sold out stadium.

I would never play GH III with anything but the Rock Band controller anyways. If it doesn't work, then GTFO.

rumble will surely add something to the fun factor of the game...maybe not so much as to make you buy a Wii just for it, but it'll be a nice addition. Anyway, Wii owners like me should just be grateful for the fact that it IS coming out on wii...despite the fact that they'll charge me, like, double the price of the game here...fuck

"like nails on a chalkboard" FUCK YES. now missing notes becomes even more frusterating. for those of you who havnt managed to bash the guitar against the ground now comes a new inovative feature. the game tells you, you suck by screeching at you every time you miss a note. FUCK YES get ready to get beat Houshold pets!!

Rumbling would be completely necessary if they were to add an earthquake difficulty wherein the guitar shakes the entire song to throw off your rhythm and the batteries die at the midway point so that you have to change them without missing a note. That would be hardcore.

The speaker idea is nice for co-op, so you can hear clearly if it's you or the other guy fucking up the notes. Rumble I can take or leave, but it's nice they're offering the option at least.

Yes, I realize it's a game. But it's a game that prides itself on capturing the feel of rock and the feel of a guitar, and frankly, I'd say rumble would annoy me in a guitar. Rumble for the beat in a game like Frequency/Amplitude was fine, but it would distract me in Guitar Hero. Best to keep it in mind for a sequel to Amplitude.

???? Ok, so the Wii remote goes on the backside, but how is it connected to the guitar "shell" itself, strum bar, fret buttons ????

WTF RUMBLE!!! Like a real guitar would do if you truly rock...

don't think so

but the speaker things is kinda nice
and the guitar will probably be cheaper also, as it doesn't need motion sensors and all...

If only there was some other way to give the sense of a "beat" to rhythm games. Perhaps they could use this new technology... called SOUND.

I like getting a little rumble for the beat of the music. That sounds like a good idea.

I like the idea of if Im playing two player, it will be simple to tell who is fucking up, because it will come out of the players guitar.

"Real guitars dont have rumble" is the dumbest fucking argument I have heard. Let me know where I can get a real guitar with no strings and 5 buttons.

All you pisses are too damn sarcastic/negative... well not all of you... but there's a lot. If there was no guitar hero 3 for Wii then you'd all complain about that. Since there is you're complaining about rumble... but if there was no rumble you'd probably be like "wtf no rumble? that's gay" and I just don't get it. I probably won't even play the game so it's all good. =)
