Wii games are not fit for fitness...yet photo

I'm not out to rain on anyone's parade, but all of that arm flailing in front of your Nintendo Wii may not be helping your physical fitness as much as you'd like to think it is.

A study called "Energy expenditure in adolescents playing new generation computer games" says that while movement of these games can burn calories, the amount they burn is not enough to matter.

This type of active gaming "equates to an increase in energy expenditure of 250 kJ (60 kcal) an hour during active gaming compared with sedentary gaming. In a typical week … active gaming rather than passive gaming would increase total energy expenditure by less than 2%," they wrote. "Although this figure is trivial, it might contribute to weight management."

It should come as no surprise that gamers will see more health and fitness benefits from the real life versions of the games simulated in Wii Sports. According to this study, the Wii versions are "not of high enough intensity to contribute towards the recommended daily amount of exercise in children."

In other words, those Wii weight loss success stories probably involve other positive health and fitness changes. In other words, you're keeping those holiday pounds unless you head outside.

We'll have to see how Wii Fit changes things in the future.

They didn't include DDR in there, you really get a good fucking workout from that. Also, it doesn't appear like they include Wii Fit which requires much more movement than the games they did test.

So let the "wii fat" jokes begin! Yup, wii still fat. I wonder if any one has done a study on the wii and if it cuts down on mouth breating. I can just see that man tittied chubby waving that remote around in his skin tight Zelda shirt. Now he is out of breathe and wheezing away like there is a clothes pin on his nose, wich keeps him from smelling his own unshowered ass. Possibly a social life could cure this affliction.

Guess what?

It's more physical exertion than if they hadn't had that. It's not a bad thing. It's just people looking for spin where there isn't any. It's more physical activity than if they'd done nothing at all but sit infront of the TV clutching a controller, which is more than a lot of people do right now.

I think kids would have lost madddd weight if they had left the stabbing/blugeoning motions intact in manhunt2

dvddesign is right, it's a start. As a former fat kid, it was really hard to get started on the road to nonfatness. But Wii games can get the ball rolling (or fatty... the kid I mean). Once kids start breathing hard for the first time from real physical exertion (I'm gonna be the bigger man (heh) and not joke on this... can't wait to see other comments), he my want to try for real, seeing it's not so bad.

As for me, the first time I did any real physical training was for Frosh football. Then I joined a real sport. There has to have been an easier way.

Yay fatties! Also Dr. Cox

He's smiling because he just saved thousands of dollars on car insurance by switching to geico.

But seriously, anything that can get people off their buts is a good thing

I was going to buy a wii to help me get in shape, but I realized I could just sit on the couch and flail my arms and legs around and get the same effect, only now I'm able to hold a beer and some candy in my hands instead of the wiibrator.

Not including DDR = fail. Plenty of people lose weight doing that.

Going from sitting at your couch or desk, day in and out, to getting up and raising your heart rate every day for 30+ mins. with games, has got to be good. You may not do an ironman afterwards, but at least it's _something_.

I agree that if this gets the fatties started to more physical conditioning then its definatly a good thing. Its not enough, I think we all knew that, but maybe it'll show some kids just how out of shape they are after playing some wii boxing. Also, yea they needed to include ddr, definatly good cardio there. Obsiety is a real big problem here, its #2 behind smoking as the leading preventable cause of death, and if it continues to get worse it will be #1 sooner than you think.

A question my uncle asked me after my grandfather died, he was pretty big and died in his mid 60s, was..."How many obese people do you see in their 60's, 70's, 80's?" The answer I said was not many, good indicator of how long you can expect to live if you are obese.

"(...)neither can contribute to the recommended 60 minutes ofdaily exercise for children under 18"

I wonder if, I like 1 hour of Wii Tennis and 2 of Wii Boxing (or something like that) could make up for that hour of regular exercise.

Oh, and they also didn't mention drums on Rock Band, I think I get more tired playing that than DDR.

Hey, at least it's an improvement over...nothing.

Then again, I'm incredibly lazy and out of shape, and I'm still very skinny and nowhere near overweight. I obviously don't need the exercise.

If you read the warranty seal on the bottom of the Wii, you will clearly see the ingredient "high-fructose corn syrup."

Wii Sports. Do things you could do with far better graphics, better controls and awesome interactivity outside in your cramped living room until you could cut the air with a chainsaw.

Am I the only one who smacks his head at stuff like this and Second Life (Although, in Second Life you can screw with the laws of physics, so it's semi-justified.).

Why no Captain Obvious? The point of these games isn't to get exercise or lose weight, it is to not sit on the couch and gain weight.
