Wii format clear up

Wii format clear up photo

For those of you who may have been confused or curious about what formats the Wii supports, here is the info straight from the manual:

Image Files: JPEG, baseline only; Size: Up to 848 x 480

Video Files: QuickTime (motion JPEG) (.mov files)

Audio Files: MP3

It says as a note that some of the formats mentioned above "may not work with the Photo Channel." Also, that the "audio components of some video files may not be playable." And finally, that using an "SD Card with slow transfer speed may result in longer load times or irregular video playback."

In case you weren't aware as well, the Wii accepts only SD Cards.

Yeh but they're expecting the majority of users to be using a TV to display it. So that res should be fine.
Finally a clear up of what memory cards to buy. I never really knew exactly what card to buy but now I can get me one of those looks like the wii is going to cost me about £270 in total Wii + Game + S-Video Cable + SD Card

It doesn't format them. It uses them in their native format. That's not a bad resolution, either.

Best of all, Nintendo can always release updates to support more filetypes.

OK, this is interesting. At the moment, they say it only supports Quicktime playback, but we know for a fact there's an "enhanced" Wii capable of DVD playback releasing in Japan sometime next year. What I'm curious about, is whether this enhanced Wii will simply be the same unit with a firmware upgrade that allows it to play DVDs, or whether Nintendo will have to replace the disc drive.

The 12 cm Wii Optical discs look and sound an awful lot like DVDs, but no one knows exactly what they are. What I'm trying to say is, is it possible to mod the Wii and get it to support other formats/DVDs in its current form?

Yeah, keener, what's the point of having higher resolution for your photos? The Wii can't even output more than that.

Personally, I hate how every time I get digital photos from somebody these days, I have to resize it down to 16% of its original area just to see it all on my (1400 x 1050) laptop screen.

Yes, please found out how big SD-cards the Wii can handle.

The photo resolution is really a moot point, TV resolution is 720X486

The listed formats appear to be a bit restrictive. Are there limitations on the MP3 encoding, as well?

I thought it supports jpegs up to a huge resolution size but obviously can only display them in the 480p tv resolutions. Thats no so bad. ------ Be interesting to see the movie formats being put to a test although without a usb hard drive or network streaming (wish) its kinda pointless. ---- @Ishaan I'd imagine the Wii is totally capable to play DVDs via software decoding, I'd also be totally shocked if the drive wasn't also the same one as used in the GC and that can read DVDs just fine.

the wording about resolution is unclear. what i infered was that it would not support pictures beyond that resolution, which is ridiculous, no digital camera these days takes pics at that size. so if the wii didnt support anything beyond that, it would be pretty shitty. if it does not display anything beyond that size constraint, thats no big deal (i.e. pictures above the max res. it shrinks to be within the max res.) that is what i assumed it would/should do. but if for some reason any picture file above that size is unviewable, that would be ridiculous. youd have to convert all your pictures just to use them with the wii as opposed to being able to just pop in an SD card fresh from your camera if it simply resized them to display.

By the way, the Wii can use any sized SD cards. I've used the SD card format for a while, and it's designed to be upgradeable. If they came out with a 16 gig SD card, you could plug it into any SD capable camera, Palm Pilot, or the Wii.

Oh yeah, the Wii can use more than just SD card. It won't accept MMC cards most likely, but you can plug an external hard drive and use it just fine.

Devices that use SD cards do sometime have size limitations. I have a MP3 player that has an SD card slot and it only supports up to a 2GB card. I would think Nintendo took this into consideration, but do we know that for a fact? A descent speed 4GB card will cost you around $70 online (off brand card that is). I recently got a 2GB Kingston branded SD card, great deal, but it sure is slooooow.

The info reported here is apparently wrong. Thanks for clearing that up Summa.

Apparently rom the real Wii manual:

"The photo channel supports JPGs of up to 8192x8192 resolution and QuickTime files of up to 848x480. (pg. 22)"

No camera takes pics as small as Summa reported the Wii's max is, which would mean he couldn't even demo it without first converting all his photos to smaller format on a computer. Some pretty bad oversight.

By the time you get to SD cards of around 4 gigs, it's just cheaper to get an external USB 2.0 harddrive. and plug it into your Wii.

I don't mean to imply that they don't exist already, I just mean that an external hard drive is more cost efficient.

So if it can use external hard drives can we use an ipod for a storage device? Can you try to connect an iPod (if you have one) and see what happens?
