Wii Forecast and News Channel dated [Update 2] photo

So what if today's Virtual Console releases bored our staff so much it actually put most of them to sleep? Which is why we didn't bother reporting on it, like some other sites. In case you're wondering, they were Space Harrier II, Ten--ZzZzZzZ ...

According to Nintendo's official Wii site, starting on December 20th, Wii users will actually be able to take advantage of the Weather Channel. Now they'll know whether or not to put on pants before they leave the house. Which is an issue for some people, believe me.

But it doesn't stop there, because on January 27th the News Channel will be live. No word on when the Internet Channel hits, but if we're dating things as far out as January and it's still "Coming Soon," it looks like we might waiting longer than we had anticipated.

[Update: It appears that the Wii Forecast channel has gone live in PAL regions. The rest of the world are encouraged to leave their house to see what the weather is like outside.]

[Update 2: The Forecast channel should be available in most regions now.]

GO OUTSIDE? ARE YOU MAD?

I'm a gamer! I fear non-circulated air and that bright shiny thing in the sky...I believe you non-gamers call it the Death Star or something.

I'm really disappointed in the VC games. Does Nintendo seriously think that these games are the classics that come to mind when people think of Nintendo consoles? Err no.

Wake me up when contra or punchout, or even a fking super mario bros is released. The fact that a person with a PS3 with linux installed could be playing the entire library (albeit illegally) of NES and SNES games is quite a blunder.

I wonder if we can trick our consoles with a DNS hack. Anybody know the UK Nintendo DNS servers?

it's just like good sex. nintendo is saying we've been naughty, and we don't deserve all our presents at once. we need to be spanked.

I think they're holding out on the good VC stuff because their current servers are pieces of shit and they don't want them to crash and burn when a million people try to clamor for Donkey Kong Country all at once.

Ignignokt01 - emulation of NES and SNES, and all other old systems for that matter is not new at all. The fact that PS3 can do it matters nothing. The PSP can, Dreamcast could, and even the Wii can if I remember correctly (from an article on this site). Also, Nintendo can't just release all their games at once. First of all, it would give the other consoles like Genesis and especially TurboGrafix16 no chance to sell much when all the blockbusters are available for the Nintendo systems. It also will net Nintendo more sales for their big titles spacing them out. Also, they have to go through the process of getting all the games rated by the ESRB, which further slows down the process.

Yup, do you think anyone would go back and buy the stuff they released in the first wave if they could get Super Mario Bros 1, 2, and 3 now for the NES? They're making money off the old school crap while they can, and letting the big guns out later on. Sure I can emulate them elsewhere (and I did on my PC years ago), but there's something special to me about playing a legitimately owned classic game on an actual Nintendo console. I'm definitely not getting Urban Champion, but you can bet I'll be downloading Punch-Out and Super Metroid the second they're out.

PS: Donkey Kong Country is SO overrated. Go back and play it again. Doesn't hold up.

I know, it really doesn't. I didn't say I'd be one of the million, I just picked the first popular game that came to mind. I actually borrowed my brother's copy a few months back and It was kinda depressing. I remembered it being so much fun when it was first released.

I realize that Goliath, as I am playing Contra on my DS Lite . And you're right, i forgot about action replay or whatever that works with the Wii, despite it being intended for the GC, to run emulator software. But the PS3 can do it for free, no extra hardware needed. thats what I was saying

I checked out the Weather Channel, it was okay. One nice thing is that just clicking on it displays the temperature so you don't have to load up the program unless you want the extended forecast or you want to check out some other place.

I was a little surprised at how few cities were on it in other countries, but that's obviously just to cut down on bandwith since it's just best to feed me US cities instead.

My new favorite game is spinning the globe ala Google Earth and seeing which island has better weather Jesus Lives (Christmas Island) or Jesus Dies (Easter Island).

Jesus Lives is up by 5.

And your South Pole forecast for the day:

Current: 1
Today: 7

So in conclusion, it's cool. I mean... I'll play with it. Not awesome, not horrible.

That aside people bitching about the VC games probably wouldn't be happy with anything they release because they're not big retro fans. Which is cool, hey, not everyone likes everything... but you can't tell me that:

A- You're a fan of old school games and,
B- You have no interest in Military Madness, Alien Crush, Gunstar Heros, PuyoPuyo (Dr. Robotnics Magic Pants in the US) and Bonk.

The TG16 games they've released are absolute classics. As far as the NES games are concerned, what games are they going to release that are popular enough to warrant a download BUT not a title that everyone's played to death?

I'm all for the Super Mario Bros but after that, what?

By the way, Military Madness was an Advance Wars style of game. Now I don't think that's a bad thing.

I just downloaded the Weather Channel. It is actually very well done. Nice, soothing music, wooshy sound effects for when you spin the globe at blinding speeds, and as was mentioned earlier, you can get your current weather from the channels menu without going into the actual weather program.

Some other things I noticed:

The weather channel is stored on the section of the flash memory dedicated to Mii, messages, and other system internals. This means that the number of blocks you have available for saving games and downloading VC titles remains unchanged after downloading the weather channel.

If you press the home button while viewing the actual channel (you have to have the actual weather program running, not just be viewing the current stats from the Channels menu), you can view an "operations guide" that explains how to use the weather channel.
