Wii Fit? No, more like Wii Fat

2:50 PM on 07.17.2007, Dale North 50 comments

     Utterly pathetic

No, seriously, my alternate headline for this was the slightly more immature '...More like Wii Sh*t', but I withheld. The guys at SarcasticGamer didn't hold back much, though.

Their parody of Nintendo's video announcement for their new Wii Fit software and Wii Balance Board at the 2007 E3 Media & Business Summit seems like it echoes many feelings and issues others in the gaming community had. The overall reaction seemed less than favorable. What Nintendo proclaimed as revolutionary seemed more like a wireless scale for the Wii to some, and if you're one of those who feels the same, then you'll absolutely love this video.

Sometimes a little satire really puts things in perspective.

dont wanna spend $3.19 on a hula hoop? get a wii...

dont wanna spend $0 on a piece of bubble wrap? get any other videogame console! enjoy the same fun in the comfort of your own living room, without that annoying popping sound

this video fails. except for the last ikea crack... that was awesome.

I would love to see one where they parody "real" video games. I can hear it now, "Tired of your kid playing outside? Wish your kid was better at slaughtering Aliens? Well, forget those tedious "outside games" and join the virtual army and kill lots 'o things".

Saw it earlier today and it gave me a chuckle! Good news on the Balance Board though is that Square Enix have expressed an interest in developing an RPG utilising the Balance Board.

I'm hoping other 3rd parties will consider support...particularly Konami with regards to Pro Evo/Winning 11! Will probably do myself an injuring playing a footy video game using both hands and both feet though lol.

The Wii is going to have more of this stuff coming I bet. People's living rooms will be filled with all the Wii peripherals you won't have room for your other consoles & games..... clever Nintendo... very clever.

It could have been better for another perspective. And that thing looks like a "AS SEEN ON TV" product. And lets not forget the dirt brown color that will get after a good 2 month use. YUK!

Still I see this shit selling a lot, A LOOOOT.

That was very unfunny, just really obvious and not as clever as it thinks it is.

You can reduce anything to shit you know.

However, the dancing couple is perhaps the most surreal cringe worthy footage I've seen in a long time. Any guy that dances with his girlfriend like that (no matter how hot she is), has obviuosly been castrated.

But guys, stop hitting easy targets, I swear to god, as each day passes, you gamers are sounding more and more like like old men who keep bleeting on about the good old days and complaining about that new "rock n roll" music. Wii Fit is a good idea, it's not for me, but I fully get where Nintendo are coming from and I am bowled over by Miyamoto's interactive design skills, his ability to go from hardcore gaming into casual human interface design is personally inspiring to me, and anyone who is serious about any form of design should study Wii Fit and work out how Nintendo reached this point.

I want Rosie O'Donnell to be a playable character.

I think this video sucked. Was it even made by people that like video games? There was a whole lot of "Your kids should be outside playing" in there, which is the dumbest.

Do people really find any of this obvious crap funny? There are many ways to laugh at Wii Fit, but this attempt is utter crap.

Wii Fit is funny enough, you can't parody it. It's like trying to make a joke about the Marlboro Cowboy dying from lung cancer, that fact is funnier than any of the obvious dull jokes that inevitably follow.

Suppose gamers like to laugh at things that reinforce their little tribe beliefs.

Well, for zardoz's concern, I do think that Nintendo is trying at least. I won't knock on their efforts... just the fact that they are trying to replace actual excersize with a white flat board and a "game" with horrible graphics... something that looks more thrown together than thought up. Shooting on gamers for laughing at the vedio just devoids you of almost any personality... especially using that one lame line.

<"you gamers are sounding more and more like like old men who keep bleeting on about the good old days and complaining about that new "rock n roll" music.">

(My BBC skillz are teh sux)

Saying that to a bunch of gamers giving an opinion about a new item... just seems stupid to me. But, back to the other side, I do think Nintendo is at least working their brains well with the things they are bringing out. I just hope Nintendo aint trying to completely replace any actual excersize with that thing...

You know, as much as I enjoy Nintendo, this does seem like kind of a stupid idea. It seems like you'd get more exercise from playing Wii Boxing, or even skipping the Wii altogether and using EyeToy Kinetic. It's more of a pain to set up and use, but it's more of a complete workout.
zardoz's Avatar

@Altair78

A white flat board and a "game"? You mean like a pad with four buttons? Like I said, anything can be reduced to it's bare minimum functions and made to sound like shit, it's the easiest thing in the world, and it's always people on an ego trip who do it, they think it makes them look clever or funny. Obviously it works on some people.

Gamers are by far the most narrow minded conumers of digital media, they always claim "We want new original content". No they don't, they want the same thing until the end of time. In other words, they want something new as long as it's their definition of something new, which obviously isn't anything new at all.

I can't have a sense of humour about this cuz it just aint funny, it's really fucking obvious. This video is just going through the motions, and if you reply to this I can't reply back, not being a bastard or anything, it's just late and I've got lot's of work to do, I shouldn't even be on here to be honest.

@Altair78

Plucking out facts from mid air now are we? So I'm a non gamer right? You don't know me mate, I use to fucking design games so let's keep this non personal shall we.

People always confuse personal arguments with debate, I'm insulting the general tone of gamers towards anything which dares to take a different path. I'm not going to single out anyone, the industry and it's consumers have a problem, it's nothing personal, so again, bypass the childish personal digs and move on.

Gamers are indeed narrow minded as proven by the predictable superiority complex they assume when talking about something like the Balance Board, god forbid anything that tries to bring in a new type of consumer, or tries to focus on human interface and minimilist presentation.

You know no one is born a gamer, you, me everyone here was a newcomer to games at some stage. These so called casual gamers will be veteran gamers of tommorow.

...

...Wow...

...

Looks like I touched a nerve. Well, I'll will apologize... I guess.

Just to let you know, though... that reading a sentence stating "Gamers are narrow-minded" tells me just that. Sir, you didn't say "Most" gamers... nor "Some" gamers or "a few" gamers. You just said gamers. That implies to ALL gamers, last I checked, which includes me. I thought the props I gave to Nintendo a couple of posts ago, as far as you know, proved I wasn't simply "narrow-minded". When I read "Gamers are narrow-minded" placed repeatedly on a post, I think "Wow, must not like gamers". Don't jump on my shit cuz I read what you typed. I just re-typed what you typed, and put together things from there. Even in my last post, I put "(?)" because I didn't know. Since we are online and not in person, I can't hear sarcasm.

And on a side note... you used to design games. I'm glad we got another that used to be in the business roaming here... but WHOOPTIE-FUCKING-DOO! This thread is an opinion of a silly video... not a basis or gamer's mental health.

Again though, since I seemingly jumped on your nerves and simply said, since I read "Gamers are narrow-minded" (which insults me and everyone on this site), that you were a non-gamer(?)... sorry. Hell, last I checked, I agreed with you on everything else except the "narrow-minded" bit.

The video, despite how obivous it may or may not have been, was funny. I'm not a huge fan of the Wii to begin with, so maybe I'm biased, but jeeze, you people defending the wii fit board for any reason other than the fact it will attract a broader audience are crazy. It's a gimmick.

God forbid some gamers hate it. I like video game controllers. Not half assed DDR pads. That's what gaming is to me. Just because I dislike it doesnt make me narrow minded.

Now now, I don't wanna pound on Zardoz and whatnot... he's not stupid by any means. I agree with a lot he has to say... I just hate to be generalized in the way he generalized gamers. Hey, as previously posted he meant it in a general tone, so I apologize for my being an ass however I was one.

But, to hear/read a bottom line of gamers are narrow-minded... insulting my intelligence is something I barely stand for. Sure, I've seen people say "PS3 is too expensive, thus it sux!" or "360s keep dying, so it's not worth it!", and lets not forget "Wii is childish and stupid, it will suck at sales!"... but assuming every gamer is narrow-minded is silly to me. If all gamers were narrow-minded, then this site, G4's site, all other blogs, games, and magazines would be one-sided or wouldn't even cover a lot of the things about the Wii that Zardoz was defending... none of us would because we'd be too narrow-minded to see 2008 nonetheless something next month or whatever. Most gaming sites would make a two line comment about an item, unstead of the long paragraphs and pages that we even get here (when they can), and leave it at that. How can that be narrow-minded?

Anyway, yeah, the thing looks a little silly to me but it does have potential if done right. Also... the video is still damn funny.

Thank you... goodnight.

Just a few quick comments.

"insulting my intelligence is something I barely stand for. "

Narrow minded /= unintelligent.

In fact, some of the most intelligent people I know are also the most narrow minded. Perhaps part of this argument is based on a difference in the meaning narrow minded.

"assuming every gamer is narrow-minded is silly to me"

No one is making this assumption. To say "gamers are narrow minded" is not the same as saying EVERY gamer is narrow minded. Typically a generalization equates to saying A MAJORITY of said group fits that description. And thats my point. To be more clear, I think 51% of gamers (or more) are narrow minded. This justifies the generalization that gamers are narrow minded.

"If all gamers were narrow-minded, then this site, G4's site, all other blogs, games, and magazines would be one-sided or wouldn't even cover a lot of the things about the Wii that Zardoz was defending..."

First, we've established that no one is saying ALL gamers are narrow minded. Second, do you even read major gaming outlets? Wii coverage SUCKS.....horribly. Wii games NEVER get the in depth look and attention that games like bioshock, mass effect or lair get. They get quickly written off as ports, or kids games, or shitty graphics, etc. So gimme a break on that one, please.
