Wii firmware version 3 unleashed: Oh look, a clock photo

In case anyone was still wondering, the Wii firmware was updated last night. Most of the changes are pretty small or cosmetic. Here's a rundown of the improvements from Nintendo

Wii Menu
The weather forecast will now be displayed on the Forecast Channel icon in the Wii Menu.
Headline news will now be displayed on the News Channel icon in the Wii Menu.
The current time will now be displayed in the Wii Menu.
The area around the Wii Message Board button will now flash when a message arrives..

Wii Message Board
You're now able to rearrange the order of your Wii Friends in the address book.
You're now able to go into the Wii Friends registration screen by pressing the A Button on a blank spot in the address book.
Envelope message icons will now appear on the calendar only on the dates when a message is received.
Your message sending history will now be displayed in Today's Accomplishments.
You can now scroll the message text by pressing the B button on the message screen.

Wii Shop Channel
The search function on Virtual Console has been enhanced.

Oddly enough, this isn't everything that's been updated. Thanks to some Neogafers, some more changes were pointed out. It's still nothing big (the blue light turning on when visiting the news channel) but still nice to know. Like the "Ability to quickly scroll the different options pages using the +,- keys". There's also a warning that pops up saying you're will will die if your console is modded.

So what do you think of all the improvements?

[Thanks to lawl for the image of his Wii dashboard and to TheGoldenDonut for the tip!]

i think some of the features are nice. maybe cause I'm not used to updates on my consoles, it's like a little surprise. That takes awhile to open up. But what ever. There's little touches, like the clock, that are nifty. It's a bummer that some legit concerns haven't been answered (loading games off of SD card, number of channels, etc.) but things are a little bit more streamlined, and it gives me hope that Nintendo will continue to make the system better.

Some will disagree that the wii doesn't offer "next-gen" experiences, but with some updates to the system, and done with a bit more frequency (it's not like I'm doing much with the system right now), on top of decent games, the Wii could turn out to be pretty decent compared to the 360, at least in applications.

Wii OS 3.0 is to WII OS 2.0 as Windows Vista is to Windows XP. Doesn't mean shit.

Difference is, Wii OS 3.0 is free.

@Crunshii

Your Wii shouldn't be overheating from connecting to the internet. Mine is on all the time and it never does. You should have that check out if its still under warranty

The clock is ugly and off-center. There has to be a way to turn it off.

Finally a clock. First the clock, and now there's potentially Metroid coming to the VC this month. I may actually turn the Wii on this month.

Not the changes I was hoping for. I second the running games off of an SD card, but would have also loved to see allowing usb storage, bluetooth access for keyboards, and a faster loading time on all things internet.

This is all well and good, but we need some things that should have been included from the beginning. Like the ability to turn the remote off without pulling the batteries out. I still don't know how that one got by Nintendo... Also, the ability to access the message board in-game would be nice, now that Nintendo's starting to think about online stuff.

Could the clock be the "big surprise" Reggie was hinting at us about? Y'know, for the hardcore gamers?

That was really nice of them.

So, when again is that amazing, must-own game coming, Nintendo?

December, you say? Oh, okay. Sweet.

Wow, Miyamoto has done it again: Clock’s simplistic gameplay, and universal appeal should bring in even more casual gamers, while its near endless depth should satisfy the hardcore crowd.

I give Clock a 9/10

This is a nice step in the right direction, but we need a bit more. The new features are kinda nice, and I really dig the re-designed Shop Channel, but it would be extra nice to be able to futz with the way the clock displays and things of that nature.

Oh well. I'ma go make dinner and then play Super Metroid until my eyes fall out.

All I have to say is - the clock isn't off center with the extra number in it.

Also this update sucks. Give me brawl now.

I really wish that Nintendo would add some actually decent features with each update. Ok cool the shop channel looks spiffy now, but I still can't play DVDs on my Wii!!!!

And when will Earthbound hit the virtual console?

Wow a clock!!! O gee I couldn't tell the time before. Except my cable box(which happens to be beside the Wii) already displays the time. Nintendo thanks for nothing. I want my Super Metroid on the VC!

No upgrade for SD card in-game memory reading? Instant fail. How hard can it be, Nintendo?

I just want to be able to change the clock to 24-hour time instead of 12. 24 makes it so much more bad-ass. It's like your in the military, and your gun is your Wiimote.

Repeat after me: This is my Wiimote. There are many like it, but this one is mine . . .

Yeah, I am not really impressed by the damn clock. It would have been nice if it would tell me the time when I press the home button in a middle of a game. For that matter it would be nice if it could alos let me use the home feature when I am playing gamecube games, since thats all I really even bother to play on my Wii.

Now I go back to waiting for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

I love how people say "Legal Import Games".

That cracks me up.

Games still say on them, for example, "For Sale, Rental, Or Use ONLY in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Latin America."

Being able to organize my address book matters to OCD people like me. And I do actually like the clock, handy for when I'm hoping between VC games.

Yes! Just a few weeks ago I was wishing the Wii menu had a clock cuz I'm too lazy to put one in the living room. I feel the same way. I play more VC games than any other games. Actually, that's all I'll probably ever play with a few exceptions.

I'd rather have "current weather" that doesn't show the local conditions from 12 hours ago.

"I'd rather have "current weather" that doesn't show the local conditions from 12 hours ago."

Mine updates about every 3 hours now. I think it varies from location to location. Then again, I don't use it to replace looking out the window, I use it to see whats coming tomorrow, or what the high will be today. Thats why they call it a forecast channel and not a "current condition so you don't have to look out a window" channel.
