Wii-exclusive NBA Jam revival confirmed, releases 2010 photo

Rumors of an EA Sports-developed NBA Jam revival are true. This morning, the publisher officially announced EA Sports NBA Jam, a Wii-exclusive throwback to the original arcade title with a “fresh new take” on the series.

As for what’s being introduced to the franchise, the publisher wasn’t specific in the official release materials. But do expect new modes, Wii visuals, characters and what EA PR is calling “gameplay depth.”

There's no concrete release date (it's expected to hit this year) or price, or even an honorable Bill Clinton mention. But word is that the official NBA Jam site will bring more information -- we’ll just have to wait until EA is up and ready to slam-dunk our brains out with hot deets. Hit the jump for the full press release.

BOOOOOOM-SHAKA-LAKA! EA ANNOUNCES NBA JAM

New Take on Classic Game to Appear on the Wii in 2010

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Jan 11, 2010 – Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced today that EA SPORTS™ is developing one of the most popular and culturally influential arcade basketball games ever made — NBA JAM — for the Nintendo Wii™. EA SPORTS NBA JAM™ revives the classic franchise with vintage NBA JAM gameplay, and all-new features that deliver a fresh new take on the game. Featuring the sights and sounds that fans of the franchise will instantly recognize, EA SPORTS NBA JAM mixes the old school with the new, to deliver a one-of-a-kind sports presentation on the Wii.

NBA JAM is one of the most recognizable franchises in videogame history,” said Peter Moore, President, EA SPORTS. “Diehard fans of the original game have been asking for a remake for more than a decade. We’re very excited to give them their wish this year with the return of this iconic franchise.”

Featuring gameplay that is true to the original, NBA JAM will have players spinning with ankle-breaking moves to the basket and on the way to high-flying, backboard-smashing dunks. In addition to the classic experience, EA SPORTS NBA JAM will also introduce new game modes, characters and gameplay depth.

NBA JAM brought an all-new visual style to the sports videogame genre when it debuted in 1993. Now, the new EA SPORTS NBA JAM re-defines the visuals for a sports game yet again by bringing true-to-life body types, updated physics and visible player emotion to the over-the-top experience.

EA SPORTS NBA JAM is currently in development at EA Canada in Vancouver, BC and will be available for the Nintendo Wii videogame system in 2010. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI.

What does it say when the thing I'm most worried about getting lost in translation is the awesome commentary?

I mean fuck everything else they could really screw up the commentary.

All I want in this game is the ability to set my ball on fire, then I'll be happy.

@x1251

If they're not spending alot of money making this and its playing up motion controls, seems like a sound distribution move to me. Families have got to be full of dads that played the original in the arcades.

If this is what the NBA Live team gets to work on in the "off-season", all the better of a decision.

But you miss the point: Will it be fun?

Unless fun is a 360/PS3 exclusive.

@x1251

for all we know, their production model is tuned to do just that, but on the Wii alone.

@x1251;

1) Turn off the Rage.

2) Buy a Wii

3) ???

4) Congratulations. You are now a non-specific console loyalist who doesn't rage when something comes to only one console. Proceed to sit back and lol at people who rage at console-exclusives.

NBA Jam was my ...jam. I just hope this isn't a retail title but rather a WiiVC title. No color-commentating, no buy!

This. I dunno why you decide to throw in personal attacks with your opinion.

My opinion, and maybe it's because I have a Wii, is that NBA Jam is fucking finally coming back. Whether it's console exclusive or not (and we both know it won't be for long) EA is reviving a terrific arcade title.

I don't think I'm cool at all. I just have better things to do than bitch because games aren't coming to my console of choice.

Must be my bad experience but everytime i hear some rep saying "Wii" and “fresh new take” in the same sentence i mentaly translate it into "idea test that will suck ass", the only exception so far has been Silent Hill:Shattered Memories, God bless you Dale North for giving me the courage to pick that one up, it's really made of awesome and win.

LOL! I get a kick at all the people who say "oh no its a Wii exclusive. I'd rather have it on the 360." Than they go argue in another topic about how the Wii needs more good 3rd Party exclusives. Can anyone else see the hypocrisy in that? Its either one, or the other, because you can't have it both ways folks.

I was really excited about this...then I saw the "fresh new take" in the press release.

Have they released this game for virtual console? If so, I think I might be better off just buying the original again. :[

this is all sorts of fail on EA's part. it's a freakin' SNES game, which means it can be emulated fairly easily without much bytes being taken up. you can easily port this to ALL systems, and probably be more successfull than just making it exclusive.

the only explanation they can possibly give is the money factor. how much does it take to port an old SNES / Genesis game like NBA jam to make for xbox, ps3, AND wii? maybe it is just cheaper to do it for one console. but we're talking about EA as the publisher, and so far, it sounds like they're the ones making it too? this is where i'm all confu-zid. last i checked EA has lots of money to throw around. instead of wasting their time trying to downfall MW2, they should try and do better in other stuff, LIKE THIS for example

Hold on guys, here's the thing. No one said anything about this game being some sort of Wii-ware revival, a la "Excitebike World Rally" or "Mega Man 9". I'm assuming that this is a full-fledged game that'll be tailored for a disc release. Can it be done on the PS3/360 then? Probably. Actually, I would just like a cool, $10-15 updated version of the original NBA Jam with new rosters, but I'd like to see what EA comes up with here before I start bashing them for releasing on the "uncool" console.

What do they mean by "Wii Visuals"? When I saw that, I immediately thought of all the arguing going on in the stories about the state of 3rd-party and M-rated Wii games. It made me laugh...

Much like a number of people here, not much of a basketball fan, but I loved NBA Jam and once my initial excitement resided and I thought about this as a Wii exclusive... well, I hope that it will be good.

But to be honest, how many Wii games are good? And what on earth makes going to Wii over PS3 & 360 a good idea? One thing and one thing only, Wii has reached the mass audience thus EA deduct that they can sell more copies of this game on the Wii than they can on the other consoles... the only problem with this theory is that of all those casual gamers out there with their Wii's, most of them won't have a freaking clue about NBA Jam... The people that remember NBA Jam are Gamers! and most gamers that I know don't play much Wii.

Just my thoughts...
