As you all know, Nintendo is releasing an "enhanced" Wii in Japan next year. According to Gamasutra, this upgraded Wii will include Sonic Solutions' "Sonic CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator" software to incorporate DVD playback. This system will be released in Japan in the latter half of 2007.

Considering Sonic Solutions is based in California, I'm sure the U.S. will be seeing this enhanced system pretty soon after Japan.

Sonic Solutions is responsible for the DVD authoring software we use at my job as well. They're on the forefront of the HD stuff as well

Soo the unfortunate question is: will we need a new wii? or just a firmware update (downloaded, Nintendo willing, via the Wii internet connection) ?

Well, it looks like it's just going to be a software add-on. Which means the Wii can ALREADY play DVDs. Get those modding fingers to work, men!

But I doubt they'll just let you download it. You'll probably need to BUY a new Wii. Unless you mod yours.

I'd bet you'll be able to download it here. There'll be too many upset people to only release it as hardware.

While sonic makes decent software for authoring, their playback software is ass.

Anything that's consumer based on their end is total crap. DVDit anyone? It took them to version 5 to make that stuff useable. Cineplayer has sucked software wise compared to WinDVD and PowerDVD. There were more fully featured players out on the market for free than Cineplayer.

And frankly, I don't need DVD playback. The only way I'd mess with one, is if I'm importing a Japanese Wii. I might end up doing it anyway, but I'm not going out of my way for DVD playback.

I prefer Wii-V-D over D-Wii-D. :)

Considering both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 will play DVDs (and I own the remote for the former), and I own several DVD players already, I really don't need my Wii to do the same thing as half a dozen devices in my home. The X360 isn't a great DVD player, but it gets the job done.

I wouldn't be surprised if they released it in the form of a disk, and sold it for £30 like what they did for the opera browser on the DS.

Well, the Wii controller would make it perfect for a DVD player, unlike a PS2 or PS3 controller or an Xbox/Xbox 350 controller.

This sounds kind of like the DS Lite all over again. In a short time, the regular Wii will be obsolete and we'll have to upgrade. How many more times does Nintendo plan to pull this stunt?

Dersu - As many times as they want, so long as they have a steady flow of hardcore fans who are willing to cut off their left hand for the company.

DS Lite improved on the hardware probably a good two years after it was finalised. There was no boost in performace and no reason to buy a new one unless you wanted the more aestetic improvements (things that everyone had complained about). Nintendo have done this with all their hand helds and it works quite well for them and the consumer who wants a small hardware update. ---- I'll be shocked if the WiiVD is anything but a software player, I see no reason for Nintendo to split its production for such a trivial feature (We've got colored cases for that). Of course if someone like Panasonic was to come along again and partner a DVD+Wii player I guess that could swing in Japan.
