A while back, we reported on a DVD playback-enabled Wii that was originally supposed to debut in Japan in 2007. The improved system never touched consumer hands that year, and it looks like it is not going to be around anytime soon. IGN is reporting that Nintendo is putting the brakes on the supposed system. At a stockholder meeting yesterday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said, “With supply constraints continuing worldwide, the priority is on the current model.”
This is one of those times when I just have to laugh at the incredulity of Nintendo. I take Iwata as a guy that likes to spend a bit of money now and then. So, I am going to go out on a limb and suppose that he bought an HDTV at some point in recent memory. Is he really not aware that standard DVD is a step backwards in terms of format? Besides, who cares if their console can play DVDs when their system memory is becoming practically dependent on SD cards? How about that hard drive that only us Otaku folk want?
Fortunately, the 8-track and VHS versions of the Wii are still slated to hit our shores this year.
[Thanks, Brian!]

Controller, power button, DVD playback. :3
I don't own an external DVD player, despite them being very low in price these days, so I was really hoping my Wii could do it!
But, whatever. I have about seven different devices that play DVD already, I don't need my Wii to play them.
In a magazine interview months before the Wii was released explaining the lack of HD, Iwata admitted he has an HDTV.
I'd say this is very unnecessary seeing as everyone has a DVD player and the Wii is not supposed to be a media player. I think their priority should be memory expansion. Srsly.
This means a little more than no dvd no hard drive. It means that since there is still supply issues, Nintendo will not be putting out any new SKUs for the Wii. Its not just a delay on the DVD, its a delay on any production of a new product. We won't get any Wii Lites with dvd and BluRay and better sensors and hard drives until the demand falls.
(Needlessly raise the price for a feature not everybody wants or needs)
The same shit happened with the PS2/DVD. At the time of release the PS2 was one of the cheaper DVD players you could buy. I know several people who bought the PS2 at launch with one game and a stack of DVDs.
As for the wii, I think it's lack of memory should be Nintendo's primary concern. It would be nice if the Wii had a DVD player, but it's entirely unnecessary. Also, as Necros pointed out, adding blu-ray would be a waste as well.

So, what the hell is this crap about a "DVD enabled" Wii? All the Nintendo needs to do is to put out a software player via WiiWare and charge the fee necessary for DVD decryption.
But I agree that I'd rather have external storage more than a DVD player if only so that the f**king PS3 and XB360 fanboys can stop proving what assholes they are with respect to the Wii and DLC.

It has to be certified by the DVD consortium. If Nintendo's hardware is too cheap (plastic laser lens, difficulty reading dual-layer discs correctly), then it cannot be certified.
Remember, Nintendo is literally bitching over pennies worth of manufacturing costs while making heaps of money on the actual system hardware. A company that cheap isn't going to throw in any feature for free, even if said feature would be almost free on their end. Nintendo almost works that way on principle.
