Wii Blaster available June 27th: PEW! PEW! PEW! photo

According to the latest GameStop flyer, the long awaited Wii Blaster will be available June 27th. What? You haven’t been waiting for this? Phooey on you, then. I know I have been waiting for this accessory since Wii came out.

See, one of my favorite genres of video games has always been of the light gun variety. Without a doubt, I’ve probably spent over hundreds and hundreds of dollars playing games such as Lethal Enforcers, Area 51, House of the Dead, and so on.

Sadly, light gun games have really fallen by the wayside these days, and with NAMCO only putting out one or two GunCon games per generation (if that), I really have nothing to look forward to.  But with the Wii Blaster coming out; the future of my six-shooting fantasies just got a little brighter.

Just think, with the Wii Blaster and the Virtual Console; I could be playing Virtua Cop 3, right now!

[Special thanks to Buck F1tches (who has apparently killed Joe Burling and stolen his identity) for the tip]

I've been waiting for that Wii blaster for quite a while. This is great news, and I can't wait to try one out.

The only problem is that this isn't going to act AT ALL like a light gun.

You can't "point and shoot," you still have to control it as you would a computer mouse, only now maybe it will be easier to steady your hand since you can fit both onto the attachment.

My only question is about how this thing will work. Does it plug into a bottom port on the Wii-mote? Does it even have a functioning trigger? Can you cock the gun as the top of the "gun" lets you believe?

I'd be interested in a D-Toid review of the product in future post. It could be the first accessory review for D-Toid!

You notice what it says in there? It's compatible with "Nintendo Duck Hunt." Woot!

You can play RE4 with it, too. =) It's things like this, I think, that will be what appeals most to the "hardcore" gamers.

@DinnertimeNinja

It looks like the nunchuck becomes the handle if you ask me. So the trigger is probably going to be one of the nunchuck buttons, like Z.

Am I blind or is that what it looks like in the picture? It also says "Wii Controller and Nunchuck not included."

If this is indeed the case, then what about games that don't use Z to shoot?

I'm with DinnertimeNinja... This would be excellent news if the Wiimote could work like a light gun, but as far as I've seen, it can't. So now it's just a glorified nunchuk controller.

That sooooo frickin' sweet. I'm there. I love the way it just incorporates the WiiMote and nunchuck. The tech is already there, this just makes it more gunlike. And you can't go wrong with making things more gunlike.

Those GameStop pictures are terrible. It tooks me nearly 2 minutes to find where the goddam nunchuck was on that contraption... Come on 5 o' clock!

I'm not quite seeing what advantage the blaster would pose over the wiimote. Anyone care to enlighten me?

To RainbowBlack:

Super Smash Brothers: Brawl
Mario Party 8
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Super Mario Galaxy
Project H.A.M.M.E.R. (Which is not cancelled, despite rumors.)
Upcoming original content coming to Wii Virtual Console
New Original Titles coming from Electronic Arts, Capcom, Midway, Ubisoft, and Konami.

If those reasons don't get you exited for a Wii, then we fail at our jobs. :)

Meh, I'll wait for a first party light gun shell. And Sega needs to release a House of the Dead/Virtual Cop/Confidential Mission compilation alongside it.

Anyone who actually looks down the sights to play a lightgun game is doing it wrong. You just point and fire, and after a few shots you should be able to adjust your aim perfectly without even trying. Roland of Gilead is ashamed of you, you have forgotten the face of your father.

You can use the wiimote like a lightgun, I had the bow and arrow working like a lightgun in LOZ:TP after calibrating the wiimote.

Here is how saw it, in your right hand you have a gun, the remote plugs into the barrel, linking into the gun, so you can shoot it just like a light gun.

Then the nunchuck plugs into the grip, allowing you to move around.

If this is the case, I am sold.

I particularly like the way Sony and Nintendo are pricing their remakes. Nintedo has the Resident Evil 4 port for $30. I am going to buy that. I stopped playing the GC version when I heard it was coming out on the Wii, and I've been in the middle of that fucking game for six months. $30 is fair as hell, considering that plus the $20 I spent on the pre-played GC version, it's STILL $20 cheaper than Ninja Gaiden: Remak- I mean, Sigma. Wow, Sony finally comes up with a game that's a system seller (for Sony fanboys who didn't play either xbox version) that's not really going to sell systems (because Sony fanboys already have a PS3) and they price it to the absolute, pound-you-in-the-ass limit. Sony is not making good decisions.

As far as the wii blaster, it looks to me to be more third party bullshit to be avoided, like almost every single controller peripheral ever produced by a third party, with the acception of the guitar hero controllers and dance pads. I have the best luck aiming with the wimote with my wrist rested firmly on my knee, twitching my wrist while using the onscreen cursor to aim relatively, rather than sighting down the remote. The relative technique works no matter where your sitting or how your box is configured. Spending an extra twenty bucks for a more cumbersom piece of plastic (which is probably going to greatly complicate the cinematic action sequences that have you waving around the remote or nunchuck in RE4) that then requires me to calibrate my set and sit in the same spot every time seems like a waste of fucking time that's perfect for the not-so-hardcore crowd to use for a day or two then ignore. This crap comes out (and we'll see more of it, rest assured) to capitalize on the wii's unprecedented success, and most of it is going to be utter bullshit, so hang onto those reciepts, and make sure you can return that bogus mess since it doesn't actually include a game.
