It seems that the MGS4 boost wasn't enough to give Sony any perpetual sales momentum in Japan, as Nintendo has left the competition eating its dust. Nintendo's little white waggle box is currently outselling the black box of Blu-ray 3:1, leaving the fight for first place in the Land of the Rising Sun more like holding a midget at arm's length and, to quote Ricky Gervais, "steadily kicking him in the bollocks."
That said, Sony can at least claim victory in the handheld market, as the PSP is still outselling the DS. This might have a tiny bit to do with the fact that everybody in Japan likely already owns the DS three times over. It's a miracle Nintendo's portable is still selling at all with the amount of people who currently own the thing. Maybe some gamers need one of every color.
If numbers make you horny and erotic, you're a pervert. However, we love you anyway, so here are the figures: In the sales period ending July 27, Nintendo sold 171,851 Wiis to Sony's 54,823 PS3s. On the handheld flipside, 256,765 PSPs were shifted compared to 217,639 DS systems.
And in an unnamed game store in Tokyo, it's confirmed that one customer looked at an Xbox 360 for a few seconds.
He did not buy it.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But who knows, maybe he decided that waiting for Ace Combat to get ported elsewhere was fine instead.
Still, it's good to see enthusiasm for the PSP. That means more Japanese developed games, so I'm all for it.
Dragon Quest IX is yet to be unleashed as well. They bring out a limited edition DQIX DS, just for the hell of it.
Well not by a big margin, impressive they can keep up against nintendo cuz I dont see any upcoming psp revolutionary titles.
Frankly, we're surprised the DS is still selling so much. Is there a Japanese citizen left who doesn't own a DS?
lol'd.

lolz.
LOL Jim! You just made my day. HAHAHAHA. It's just funny.
"Since the PS3 costs three times as much, the revenue is pretty much the same for both. And the PSP costs more than the DS, right? So Sony has more revenue. It is money not units that matter."
How was that?
FWIW, most of the guys I work with have managed to score a Wii for their wives and play a PS3 for themselves. The only exception to that are a couple of guys who aren't gamers that have a Wii for party games.
You may as well stick up a headline that reads "Bingo hall bends PS3 over, gives it firm and humiliating geriatric sales shafting."
Look.
While the Wii is not a direct competitor to the PS3 and Xbox 360, it is still a video game system that has successfully captured a good portion of the market share (the same one Sony and Microsoft are mainly after) and has also tapped into a new one due to the expanded audience.
And that's what I like about Nintendo. It's Nintendo. A tiny harmless white box is doing what games are intended to: Make people relax and have fun. The Wii doesn't have great graphics or a huge variety of truly hardcore games. But it sure does pack a lot of fun for anyone who would try it out.
I'm tired of being hardcore. It makes you sound like an asshole. Bashing on a winning console is just anal. Get the videogame you want, have fun with it, and don't hate people who don't think exactly like you.
Let's focus on hating hunger in Africa. And Jack Thompson.
