Wii bends PS3 over, gives it firm and humiliating Japanese sales shafting photo

It seems that the MGS4 boost wasn't enough to give Sony any perpetual sales momentum in Japan, as Nintendo has left the competition eating its dust. Nintendo's little white waggle box is currently outselling the black box of Blu-ray 3:1, leaving the fight for first place in the Land of the Rising Sun more like holding a midget at arm's length and, to quote Ricky Gervais, "steadily kicking him in the bollocks."

That said, Sony can at least claim victory in the handheld market, as the PSP is still outselling the DS. This might have a tiny bit to do with the fact that everybody in Japan likely already owns the DS three times over. It's a miracle Nintendo's portable is still selling at all with the amount of people who currently own the thing. Maybe some gamers need one of every color.

If numbers make you horny and erotic, you're a pervert. However, we love you anyway, so here are the figures: In the sales period ending July 27, Nintendo sold 171,851 Wiis to Sony's 54,823 PS3s. On the handheld flipside, 256,765 PSPs were shifted compared to 217,639 DS systems.

And in an unnamed game store in Tokyo, it's confirmed that one customer looked at an Xbox 360 for a few seconds.

He did not buy it.

Well, the Wii is no.1 worldwide so this isn't a surprise. One single game cannot turn the tides even if it's a great one as MGS4. I hope for Sony they can have more great games in the future. The PSP is doing well, apart from Monster Hunter I suppose there are other titles released in Japan that keep people buy the thing. The last game I played on my PSP was everybody's golf 2. DS isn't threatened by the PSP, it has just more great software coming and I want to see the numbers when DQ9 hits :)

He might have bought that 360! I'm sure the space marines were doing their best to recruit him into their hulking grey-brown ranks.

But who knows, maybe he decided that waiting for Ace Combat to get ported elsewhere was fine instead.

The 360 is the otaku of Japanese consoles: lonely and with no hope of ever leaving home, in this case, the game store.

Not surprised at all, really.

I'd hardly call that outselling the DS! Sure, they beat them by like 40,000 units, but who cares? The DS is so far ahead that it doesn't matter. They're just cementing their lead.

Still, it's good to see enthusiasm for the PSP. That means more Japanese developed games, so I'm all for it.

Doesn't everyone own a Wii over there as well?

not surprised especially since japan isn't known for their love of FPS and other games which help to move ps3/360's over here. In fact watch a Japanese game show and you should instantly release that "waggling" is right up their alley.

The fact the DS beat the PS2's lifetime sales in Japan is amazing enough, but to keep on selling at the rate it is?

Dragon Quest IX is yet to be unleashed as well. They bring out a limited edition DQIX DS, just for the hell of it.

Sony can take some comfort in the results for the handheld market, though. The PSP outsold the DS in the same period, selling 256,765 units compared 217,639.

Well not by a big margin, impressive they can keep up against nintendo cuz I dont see any upcoming psp revolutionary titles.

Frankly, we're surprised the DS is still selling so much. Is there a Japanese citizen left who doesn't own a DS?

lol'd.

I still don't understand how the Wii is doing so well. I bet even after the July sales (after Nintendo's dissapointing e3 performance) the Wii will still be selling high. Brawl and Galaxy has long gone and came out. What is there to look forward to anymore?

Oh my God. The Wii will just not stop. I've enjoyed my Wii until now, but with the lack of good games on the horizon I don't think it deserves to be selling this much.

In the end PSP sold best. So Sony will be happy.

I think the Japanese are just stockpiling Wiis and DSs for when Godzilla reemerges to destroy Tokyo. You need to be able to play Zelda and Super Mario when your city is being leveled by a giant, radioactive dinosaur.

I am just trying to beat Sony's PR spin team to the punch!!!

"Since the PS3 costs three times as much, the revenue is pretty much the same for both. And the PSP costs more than the DS, right? So Sony has more revenue. It is money not units that matter."

How was that?

I still don't see why these numbers matter so much. The Wii target demographic isn't the same as the PS3 or Xbox360. If it were, you wouldn't be seeing so many recent news articles about all three companies apologizing for leaving out hardcore, casual, or non-space-Marine players, depending on the system.

FWIW, most of the guys I work with have managed to score a Wii for their wives and play a PS3 for themselves. The only exception to that are a couple of guys who aren't gamers that have a Wii for party games.

You may as well stick up a headline that reads "Bingo hall bends PS3 over, gives it firm and humiliating geriatric sales shafting."

I bet these numbers would matter if the Xbox 360 and PS3 were in the winning position. :/

Look.

While the Wii is not a direct competitor to the PS3 and Xbox 360, it is still a video game system that has successfully captured a good portion of the market share (the same one Sony and Microsoft are mainly after) and has also tapped into a new one due to the expanded audience.

It's too bad that guy who was looking at the 360 didn't buy it. Xbox is fun.

I think it's ironic that the 360 is getting more Japanese support than the PS3 is while in 3rd in Japan.

That's wierd, the number of consoles sold in no way, shape, or form helps make my Wii any more fun to play...

Well I guess we have to wait for next year to see if PS3 will do better. Also come with more titles or at least more downloadable stuff to get. Well either way there not going to win the sales this year maybe since like the ds soon everyone will have a wii and the Ps3 sales will rocket next year . one can hope I guess.

I figured it out. Nintendo's not COOL. It's never been. Maybe somewhere in the late 80's it was RAD, but hey, nothing's RAD anymore. Sony is cool because it's hardcore. Microsoft is cool because it's meant for the MAN out there. Hell, Genesis was cool because it was made for the OLDER GAMER DUDE who knows his shit.
And that's what I like about Nintendo. It's Nintendo. A tiny harmless white box is doing what games are intended to: Make people relax and have fun. The Wii doesn't have great graphics or a huge variety of truly hardcore games. But it sure does pack a lot of fun for anyone who would try it out.
I'm tired of being hardcore. It makes you sound like an asshole. Bashing on a winning console is just anal. Get the videogame you want, have fun with it, and don't hate people who don't think exactly like you.
Let's focus on hating hunger in Africa. And Jack Thompson.
