Destructoid does not condone illegally obtaining videogames in any way shape or form, but since we are reporters we know about these things anyway because of our investigative prowess and need to know about all things at all times (a butterfly just landed on a flower in Mongolia, by the way). As such we know that the battery in the PSP is a game pirater's delight and allowed plenty of modders to basically get all their games for free. This leads us to the PSP Go, where Sony is trying to correct their mistakes on the easily pirated PSP.
This means that the battery will not be removable and the firmware is even tougher to break than the PSP 3000's. In speaking with Playstation Insider, Sony's John Koller laid it all out when he was asked about piracy, "We've had a lot of success with the 3000," he said, going on to discuss what the Go is doing to be even tougher on pirating. "You won't be able to rip your games and play them on the system, the firmware precludes that. There's no external battery, so there's a number of protections put into place on the system."
I suppose it isn't that big a deal, but let's all wave hello to mailing in our PSP Gos (Goes?) if we need a new battery.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Hopefully they'll depot them for battery service at a reasonable price.
Ok, no it's not, porn's more important.
But eh. I don't and have never pirated a single game (honetsly), and I wouldn't even know where to start hacking up a PSP to play them - however, a lack of battery access in the Go annoys me, should anything go wrong with it I don't like the idea that I'd probably have to mail it off somewhere which is the case with so many sealed gadgets these days. Sony aren't doing much to make me want to buy a PSPGo over a PSP 3000.
either way. If they jacked steroids in the security, good for them.
Someone will find a way.
Still waiting on a solution for my UMD collection. That's what's concerning me the most. The thing is overpriced @ $250, and has made my collection of legit games a hassle. No UMD solution, no sale.
One more thing... why buy a pspgo when a ps3 slim is only $50 more?
and it's just "tougher to crack"? i'll give it a month before someone cracks it and pirates soon flock out to the stores to buy it. Not saying it's a good thing, i'm just saying. Making it tougher doesn't mean it'll never be cracked one day.
We need more porn related headers that make me read articles I don't care about.
Niero hit the nail right on the head though.
Anyway, I will be keeping my 2000, though I am interested in getting the Go eventually.
I haven't had to replace any battery so far, but my original DS will need one eventually, as it sucks at holding a charge. Given how old it is, it's no wonder, and I don't like the idea of not being able to replace the battery myself. Sure, you can always send it off to the people who make your device, but don't you run into labor costs and shipping/handling that way? I'd rather save money and do it my own self.
"I dreamed the other night that my cock was a giant, tri-masted Spanish galleon."
...and...
"Ashes to ashes, bones to dust."
Really, what's not to love about that movie? It could honestly stand on its own without all of the sex scenes. XD
(as the pirates are watching one wench eat out another)
Argh! You missed a spot!
The PSP has always been knocked for it's short battery life but in the past this was easily fixable via a higher capacity battery or even a second battery for when the first goes dead.
Now, we're being asked to pay MORE to take a HUGE step back in battery life with hardly any options for extra battery life on the go.
That dog won't hunt, Sony.
And I probably would have bought it (albeit, after a price drop) if it weren't for that.
This is a perfect example of Sony, a company that once tactitly supported homebrew on their devices caving to the the interests of game publishers like Activision who think that ZOMG PIRACY is totally ruining their sales, not the fact that, you know, their products are all derivative pieces of crap. And in the end, everyone loses, since fewer people buy the PSP Go and fewer games are sold. Ugh.
Really, aren't there smarter ways to do this? If the PSP Go's focus is on downloaded games, couldn't they have the game store check for pirated firmware every time you use the service or something?
As far as I know, the PS3 hasn't been cracked yet. I'm surprised mod chips haven't surfaced for it, especially after 3 or so years. But then again, who owns a blu-ray burner anyway?
I have a modded Wii, but that's only because it's a Japanese one and thus can't play US-region games. Nintendo was so stupid for region-locking their games, sinces it only lends credibility to mod chip makers. I wouldn't even have had to get the Japanese Wii if Nintendo could learn the laws of supply and demand.
It wasnt easy being a psp owner way back in the day bud.Homebrew did any and everything you exspected from the psp originally heck you could use you psp as a universal remote with enough effort(opened up my garage with one just for the lulz).Of course pirated was their but when the psp first came out Coded Arms and monster hunter were the best games out for a while everything else was shovel ware. So dont assume all hombrewers are pirates they also are thee makers of cool stuff. Also the psp has almost zero online support(for games) the guys who got a functional online network setup for psp games were hombrewers as well.
Anyway I'm buying a psp 2000 hacking it and showing it off to all my friends with a pspgo just to which is better(I know ill win). Actually if they fix the BROWSER on the psp i would buy the go but i know they won't they wanna fight Davy Jones and not let me on 4chan.
