Why you won't be removing the PSP Go's battery photo

Destructoid does not condone illegally obtaining videogames in any way shape or form, but since we are reporters we know about these things anyway because of our investigative prowess and need to know about all things at all times (a butterfly just landed on a flower in Mongolia, by the way). As such we know that the battery in the PSP is a game pirater's delight and allowed plenty of modders to basically get all their games for free. This leads us to the PSP Go, where Sony is trying to correct their mistakes on the easily pirated PSP.

This means that the battery will not be removable and the firmware is even tougher to break than the PSP 3000's. In speaking with Playstation Insider, Sony's John Koller laid it all out when he was asked about piracy, "We've had a lot of success with the 3000," he said, going on to discuss what the Go is doing to be even tougher on pirating. "You won't be able to rip your games and play them on the system, the firmware precludes that. There's no external battery, so there's a number of protections put into place on the system."

I suppose it isn't that big a deal, but let's all wave hello to mailing in our PSP Gos (Goes?) if we need a new battery.

I guess its not a problem with iPhones but I don't know ... I think the consumer loses on this one. Even the best batteries degrade (and your pspgo will be a brick in a few years) and pirates will go through absolutely ridiculous measures to get their way anyway.

Hopefully they'll depot them for battery service at a reasonable price.

It's amazing that we care more about the porn than the fact that Sony's trying to prevent piracy.

Ok, no it's not, porn's more important.

Not only will it most certainly be cracked, it'll be cracked within 24 horus of public release, probably.

But eh. I don't and have never pirated a single game (honetsly), and I wouldn't even know where to start hacking up a PSP to play them - however, a lack of battery access in the Go annoys me, should anything go wrong with it I don't like the idea that I'd probably have to mail it off somewhere which is the case with so many sealed gadgets these days. Sony aren't doing much to make me want to buy a PSPGo over a PSP 3000.

Well, the battery downgrades came in late into the PSP's lifetime. The first 2-2.5 years were through firmware alone. There was always a struggle Sony had
either way. If they jacked steroids in the security, good for them.

Someone will find a way.

I can't blame Sony on this one, though Niero is dead on, all batteries degrade over time.

Still waiting on a solution for my UMD collection. That's what's concerning me the most. The thing is overpriced @ $250, and has made my collection of legit games a hassle. No UMD solution, no sale.

One more thing... why buy a pspgo when a ps3 slim is only $50 more?

like...this is cool and all but any smart person with a hacked PSP won't bother buying another PSP if the hacked one does justice.

and it's just "tougher to crack"? i'll give it a month before someone cracks it and pirates soon flock out to the stores to buy it. Not saying it's a good thing, i'm just saying. Making it tougher doesn't mean it'll never be cracked one day.

I have a certain respect for pirates because well..they've cracked everything that's come out so far, that requires a certain level of skill and talent. However I do not condone their activities.

Niero hit the nail right on the head though.

Well I saw this coming as soon as the initial pics came out for the go. I don't like the way this was worded tho. Just cracking the battery and installing cfw doesn't INSTANTLY give you free games. the user decides what they do once they install cfw. Yes, piracy is possible, and many people use cfw for that, but there are many other things possible that can be done that interest me much more (homebrew, custom apps, etc)

Anyway, I will be keeping my 2000, though I am interested in getting the Go eventually.

Honestly I would've have mind the embedded battery, but the problem lies in the fact that the PSPgo's battery life for is supposed to be 5 hours. That's means playing a downloadable game on the Go is the same length as playing a UMD game on the normal PSPs. Hell, you get more battery life playing a downloaded game from a normal PSP's standard battery. The PSPgo's only advantage is the smaller form factor, but you can play all the PS store games and the upcoming Mini's on the regular PSPs that are already out. It sucks.

Not to mention that with the previous models you could either swap out a nearly-dead battery for a fully-charged one if you were away from a charger, or better yet, use the giant-sized battery for super capacity.

I haven't had to replace any battery so far, but my original DS will need one eventually, as it sucks at holding a charge. Given how old it is, it's no wonder, and I don't like the idea of not being able to replace the battery myself. Sure, you can always send it off to the people who make your device, but don't you run into labor costs and shipping/handling that way? I'd rather save money and do it my own self.

I'm not totally against non-replaceable batteries, but I AM against non-replaceable batteries that have low storage capacity.

The PSP has always been knocked for it's short battery life but in the past this was easily fixable via a higher capacity battery or even a second battery for when the first goes dead.

Now, we're being asked to pay MORE to take a HUGE step back in battery life with hardly any options for extra battery life on the go.

That dog won't hunt, Sony.

And I probably would have bought it (albeit, after a price drop) if it weren't for that.

Yes, success until a few months back, where ChickHEN for PSP-3000's was release, along with CFWEnabler as well which allows ISO booting on 3000's. Sony, keep trying, but so long as your system supports running games from editable memory, we will be able to make it happen.

I think this is a ridiculous measure to take, especially since Sony knows damn well that the PSP go will be cracked. I can't think of a single piece of technology that hasn't been modified by consumers in a way unintended by its original manufacturers.

This is just stupid, seriously, When will large corporations learn that hurting the consumers and punishing all of them for the actions of a small few is NOT a good business model and will result in less units sold!

This is a perfect example of Sony, a company that once tactitly supported homebrew on their devices caving to the the interests of game publishers like Activision who think that ZOMG PIRACY is totally ruining their sales, not the fact that, you know, their products are all derivative pieces of crap. And in the end, everyone loses, since fewer people buy the PSP Go and fewer games are sold. Ugh.

I'm gonna have to agree with Sony on this one. After reading all of the "the pirates will crack it" comments I wonder to myself what pirate is going to spend $250 bucks to crack this thing and fuck up the battery. If anyone's losing money on piracy it's the poor bastards who make DS games. Seriously what Sony and all other VG companies should really be doing is launching investigations into who is pirating their shit and bust them. It's not that hard to find an IP addresses that have visited websites. Hell, they got the guy who broke into Sarah Palin's e-mail with a week, but they can't catch people who torrent movies and games?

kind of a stupid idea if you ask me- the only reason that the psp is crackable by battery is that you can hack the firmware IN THE BATTERY- try just making a unit that doesn't need to read the battery firmware instead of denying a removable battery.

The only way you can fight a pirate is by giving them incentives to buy things, not by challenging them with "pirate-proof" devices/updates. It WILL be cracked, I can almost guarantee it. Probably within a month of the PSP Go's release. There are people that have more fun cracking firmware than playing games.

Really, aren't there smarter ways to do this? If the PSP Go's focus is on downloaded games, couldn't they have the game store check for pirated firmware every time you use the service or something?

As far as I know, the PS3 hasn't been cracked yet. I'm surprised mod chips haven't surfaced for it, especially after 3 or so years. But then again, who owns a blu-ray burner anyway?
I have a modded Wii, but that's only because it's a Japanese one and thus can't play US-region games. Nintendo was so stupid for region-locking their games, sinces it only lends credibility to mod chip makers. I wouldn't even have had to get the Japanese Wii if Nintendo could learn the laws of supply and demand.

Why can't we just stop pirating things. This is why I hate pirates they ruin every thing for the people that buy the games in the first place. Is it really that hard to go without homebrew if we can have one system that doesn't require crap like this.

It wasnt easy being a psp owner way back in the day bud.Homebrew did any and everything you exspected from the psp originally heck you could use you psp as a universal remote with enough effort(opened up my garage with one just for the lulz).Of course pirated was their but when the psp first came out Coded Arms and monster hunter were the best games out for a while everything else was shovel ware. So dont assume all hombrewers are pirates they also are thee makers of cool stuff. Also the psp has almost zero online support(for games) the guys who got a functional online network setup for psp games were hombrewers as well.
Anyway I'm buying a psp 2000 hacking it and showing it off to all my friends with a pspgo just to which is better(I know ill win). Actually if they fix the BROWSER on the psp i would buy the go but i know they won't they wanna fight Davy Jones and not let me on 4chan.

Yet another reason not to buy the Go. I've had to replace the battery in my PSP 1000 when it started dying, and it was simple. Go to the store, buy it, done. Now when you hit 'round about the 2 year mark, you're screwed without sending it to Sony. No thank you.

Okay, first, internal batteries are becoming the norm in almost all portable consumer electronics, so everyone up in arms is really working against the indication that they actually oppose this for piracy. Weak excuses like owning two batteries and being able to switch them provide a poor platform from which to launch an impassioned testimony against Sony hurting the consumer. I won't say that it isn't true, the Go's battery life is a farce. Though I have a hard time believing that a bunch of people who joke about how awesome it is to outfox Sony and pirate PSP software care so deeply about a decision to use an internal battery in (large) part to combat piracy because they can't use an extended life battery anymore. Especially considering how hurt and defensive this group becomes every time any soulless corporation tries to prevent them from stealing software.
