Why Stranglehold pack-in Hard Boiled is hard-wired for the PS3 only photo

Gaming's resident journo-badass N'Gai Croal gets the scoop on how the pack-in of the 1992 John Woo movie Hard Boiled came to be, as well as why it will only be playable in the PS3.

Level Up was told by Midway's Steve Allison that they simply had the idea to include the movie, as Stranglehold continues the story of the character Inspector Tequila from Hard Boiled. Little did they know that rights owner of the movie already had plans to re-release it at the end of July.

To prevent the game's release from shutting out sales of the upcoming movie disc, they agreed to only release a set number of game/movie combinations, and they created the disc so that it could only be played in a PS3. Allison says:
"We contractually limited the total number of units we would produce to a set number. I can't tell you the number beyond the fact that it's a six-figure quantity, and this works to make the Special Edition a real collector's item--hopefully a part of videogame history in that it's the first ever SKU to have a game and film on the same disc.

The film can only play/launch on a Sony Playstation 3 game system, not from a dedicated Blu-Ray player. This means a videophile can't buy this for their Blu-Ray player; it's going to be a gamer who is passionate about this SKU."

Oh snapplesauce...
Didn't realize it would only play on a PS3.

I don't feel so shitty anymore about having to play it on 360.

Um, what kind of videophile is going to buy the game/movie combo instead of just go buy the movie independently? Is there no Blu-Ray/HD-DVD standalone being released?

If there's a Blu-ray/HD-DVD, I don't know why anyone who didn't have a PS3 would WANT to spend $60 instead of $30 for just the movie. In this case, it just seems like you're limiting your options with the film.

Still, it's a cool pack-in.

That a bit lame, but understandable. All fanboys worldwide should unite for once and celebrate ithat Hard Boiled is finally getting a decent transfer!!

That and I think the Weinstein Company (The rights holder for Hard Boiled) is actually more in the HDDVD camp as well.

But eh, I picked up the new Hard Boiled DVD as it has a bunch of special features as well making a bit more valuable than the Stranglehold CE pack-in in my eyes.

God I hope this game is good. I'll admit, once I saw Midway as the publisher my first thought was, "Oh shit, this could be bad". But I really want this one to be good, please?!

@Kalakaua
Midway is the developer and publisher. The team that did Psi-Ops is working on it.

And the thing about Midway I've noticed is that the some of the really bad games they've published like Hour of Victory weren't actually made in house. HoV was developed by nFusion.

well this makes a little more sense. as long as their is a separate high def release for those that wanted to watch it on stand alone players, and the price is the same as just a game. i'm cool with this. i mean if you are really buying the game are just getting an added bonus that is the film. it makes sense. this does affect the region coding, but i've no problem with it. i'm glad they explained this.

@brainderailment: since the game won't be that big, they will probably just add it to the disc. So if you are a fan of the movie, you'll likely still have to get the "proper" BD/HDDVD later. I feel the same about the game btw: looked kinda cool first, now it looks like another Dead To Rights. But you get to play Tequila, come on! :)

just one more thing to bitch about. i don't see anyone bitching about pirates being out on blu-ray. most blu-ray players are ps3s anyway.

@richie579: I thought the exact same thing when I saw that line. Also, don't forget To Kill A Mocking Bird in The Darkness.

Why would someone who bought the PS3 game want to watch the movie on a different BD Player than the PS3 anyways. Who would even buy a second BD Player if they have a PS3..

Hard Boiled is the absolute shit, and possibly the last good movie John Woo did since he started making Hollywood films.

This is the first multiplatform game I'm actually going to get on the PS3 instead of the 360 just because the free movie. Of course if I can't get a hold of the limited collectors version of it then I'm switching back to the land of rumble and achievments.

Are you guys sure that it’ll be the same price as the retail version of the regular game? I can’t see them not charging $70 for the package deal...
